Unfortunately you are pretty much s.o.l. At least I'm not aware of anything truly similar other than LotF.

The character action genre might be a better place to look that other RPGs. Exclude the dial-a-combo ones, the dynamics there are just too different and you are left with the rebooted DmC and MGR:R. Both are of course hella different from DkS but the sense of control of your character is similar.

Of course you could try the King's Field games. They are the originals. But they do feel a bit dated and the combat is definitely slower paced and less sharp.

Edit, haven't played it myself (since this thread turned me on to it) but there is an obscure PSN title called strength of the sword 3 (it's apparently a team of 2 guys and they don't do sequels, so they close their trilogies right away).

They are currently looking for funding to expand it and port it to PC.

VaatiVidya recently posted a video about a new indie game called "Salt and Sanctuary" which is basically a 2D version of dark souls. The combat is very similar to that of the souls series, but in 2D. If you're interested here's the video:

SkaStudios, I am interested.

Still, wouldnt a 2D game trying to emulate that combat style work better viewed from the top? A sidescroller has a lot of jumps and attacks while in the air, viewing from the top is more about 360 degrees combat. There isnt much love for top down shooters and especially for ones that are around melee combat.
I think it's trying to emulate that metroidvania feel, with the combat and atmosphere of a souls game.
Incidentally, I stumbled across this today:

Same basic concept. Figured it might interest you.

Ah yes, saw this game mentioned on metacritic but I don't know much about it other than that it was greek mythology based. I assumed it was kind of like a more stylized God of War, but it seems I was wrong and it's actually way cooler. Thanks for the heads up.
