What games do you think of when you hear "epic final boss"?

IMO Metroid Prime (the first one) had a really spectacular final boss.

More recent games typically just don't have the same quality of final bosses anymore.

I don't know if this counts, but the battle with Red on Mt. Silver in Pokemon Gold/Silver/Platinum is pretty epic. He's got the most powerful team in franchise history, he doesn't say a word before or after the battle, and... Well... He's you. If you played Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow prior to that battle, that trainer was the character you played as. It's as though he kept on going, kept getting stronger and stronger, even after you turned the game off.

Definitely one of my most memorable final showdowns.

Ganon at the end of Twilight Princess was one of my favorites, if just for all of the different forms.

Doom 3 Cyber demon practically made me wet myself, however I think the most epic bossfight I've ever had was when I took down an assault chopper using a car tricked out with a minnie gun in Twisted Metal Black

Kefka in Final Fantasy 6, actually, no, describing the battle as 'epic' does not do it justice. At. All.

I mean, your entire team, which is comprised of fourteen individual characters battles him at once! AS THE DUDE SLOWLY TRANSFORMS INTO A FRICKIN' GOD.

And Dancing Mad... Dear sweet mother of Mary Dancing Mad... Nobuo Uematsu you are a GOD!

Shoot em ups: Touhou 7 (I want to play Ikaruga...)

From a thematic perspective i couldn't agree more. Fighting 3 tiers of monsters, demons, and god knows what before confronting a man who has all but won. Rather clever how the entire battle is one big reference to divine comedy, gott give it major points for that.

That being said, I'd have to say Chaos from Dissidia. One of the coolest and most epic final bosses in any fighting game, and he wasn't a cheating whore!? but a legitimately hard boss! his fighting is epic, he's voiced by Keith David, and his ultimate attack transforms him to Godzilla sized proportions where he proceeds to smack you silly with 50+ foot long swords before blowing up a majority of the area which is small with nowhere to hide. Most jaw droppingly awesome final battle ever, hell it's awesome to just watch yourself get owned by him the first time round because he does it with such grace and awesomeness.

I just remembered Okami had a really interesting final boss. Frank Fontaine from Bioshock would have been epic had it simply been more difficult, I think. Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast had a pretty good final boss fight. Beyond Good and Evil's final boss was bizarre but interesting. Man, there are just sooo many otherwise-good games that lack a good final boss, especially more modern stuff (read: Lambent Brumak).

True, especially the last sword fight, which is something I was waiting for since OoT. It was, truly epic.

Final Fantasy the Fourth boss was pretty cool. Though optional side boss to get Ragnarok was harder to kill.

Metal Gear Solid.

After finally disabling Rex (which takes the sacrifice of one of Snake's only living friends), a bareknuckle fistfight on top of the burning wreck and a car chase, when you hear Liquid shout "Not yet Snake! It's not over yet!"

One of the best villains ever and probably my favourite game.

I don't know anything about epic boss fights, but when it comes to sucky ones, I'd have to say the last boss in borderlands. The game was so great, but the end was so anticlimactic.
