Just did a quick search seeing if this has been done before, and as far as I know it hasn't..

But does anyone know of any games with a good mapmaker where you get good control over object placement and preferrably able to build a custom map.

Only ones I can think of off the top of my head are Far Cry and Timesplitters...

Anyone got any good suggestions? Preferrably console games due to lack of a high end pc and I'm attempting to make a Machinima series. :)

Warcraft III has a robust map editor, but considering you're going for machinima, I'd say either Far Cry 2 or the Source engine.

I really liked forge in Halo 3. Sure it didn't let you make our own map from scratch, but that's what I liked about it. What I would like to see is a cross between Farcy's mapmaker and forge.

Thanks for the replies. Leaning towards Far Cry 2 by the sound of it.

Is there different characters in game that we can use?

Well Farcry 2 is the only one I know with a map editor. Well littleBigPlanet too, but that's not really a map editor. Either way, Farcry 2 has an amazing map editor.
I totally agree. Thing is, at first it can be complicated, but the more you use it the more you get the hang of it. Totally great. Why doesn't MGO have a mapmaker? Or the cod series? A map editor in Cod4 And WaW would be awesome.

That's exactly the kind of thing we are looking for by the sound of it, but then we want a wide selection of characters to use as well. Much like in Timesplitters..

You want Garrys Mod then. It's compatible with nearly every Source engined map and ragdoll, and it's fun to mess around in. It's PC, though.

All Source games.

Battlefield 1942/Vietnam had an amazing map editor if you could be bothered to master it.

Halo 2 PC has a good map editor/creator. It annoyed me immensely just how much Forge was watered down.

Far Cry 1

Timesplitter 1/2/3

Unreal Tournament/UT2k4

Quake: Quake may be the most modable game ever made.

That should be enough to be working with.

Crysis comes with Sandbox 2, an awesome map editor that lets you make not only your own multi-player maps (á la Far Cry 2), but also single player maps, campaings with custom events, custom cutscenes & dialouge... As a matter of fact, if you're skilled enough with coding (c++ etc), you can create an entire new game :3

Yeah I've heard about that before. I'd have to see if my PC could handle the games though.. lol.

Cheers for all the input from everyone so far though, it's been helpful ;)

I have a feeling you're talking about consoles, because almost all of the pc games I have contain map editors (or at least have one available to download).

All I can think of on consoles are Far Cry (Instincts and 2), and Timesplitters. Honestly, doing it on a PC is just easier and more convenient. You can almost definitely run source games, at least on low settings, as even my ~4 year old craptop (low end when I bought it) can run them.
