I've been really getting into games that tell their stories with player actions and environment rather than dialogue. For me, as games seem to be moving more and more toward cinematic story-telling, having a game show its story through its mechanics is a great change of pace.

Some of my favorites are:
Shadow of the Colossus/Ico
Dark Souls
Infinity Blade

What are yours?

Monster Hunter
Mega Man
almost any Nintendo game
Left 4 Dead
The older final fantasies

Im not against having a little story in a game, the problem is when cinematics become more important to the game than the game itself. I've spoken to some people who have played certain games JUST for the cinematics (they were final fantasy fans).... they sort of reminded me of those people who watch the superbowl for the commercials.

I prefer cinematic storytelling, but my favorite minimalistic story-driven game is Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. It's not in first-person, and it has cutscenes, but the atmosphere, the people and your actions in the game still speak volumes with what is a pretty simple premise.
