Before Fable, I haven't enjoyed that many games with mutliple/alternative/better endings that was worth the re-play. I loved playing Parasite Eve again for the seconding ending, but I could barely make it through the half-way mark during the re-play for Parasite Eve 2.

Any interesting stories out there about spending hours for a good/crappy ending?

I hate games that make you go through "100% Complete" or thereof in order to see the whole ending. That's what YouTube is for.

I also hate people who say you have to see every ending to claim that you have really "beaten a game". I will not go back through SO 2 or the Chrono series just to see every single ending. I am not interested in dressing up as "Tuxedo Snake" (though getting to start the game over with all the weapons (including Stealth Suit and Bandanna) was REALLY FUN!!! I love the games: I just don't have that amount of time to dedicate to playing.

Silent Hill 2 Dog Ending was the best.

When I played through Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne I was pleased to find I achieved the best ending (where everything goes back to normal) without a faq, just by playing the game according to my own personal ideals. Then again there is the much more difficult 'True Demon Ending' I have yet to put in the time to get.

Back in the day I'd play a game through over and over again to get all the endings. I got all the endings for Silent Hill 1, Resident Evil 1, and Resident Evil 2; though those games aren't 50 hour RPGs. Nowadays I pretty much just go through it once and I'm done with it.

For all my bashing of this type of thing, I played Wind Waker a second time to see if I could get all the statues (as you start out with a colour camera if you've beaten it before) and enjoyed not wearing the green costume. Am I sad?
Maybe. I did the same thing.

EDIT: Forgot to respond. I don't mind alternate endings but don't expect me to play a game through more than once.

Alternate endings can be great! I like how it is used in series such as Fable, and I hope more games will use it well, but it definitely should not be used, as zhoomout said, as "a transparent attempt to try to lengthen the lifespan of the game".

That being said, the game still needs to be fun enough, or offer enough incentive to want to play it through again.

The Silent hill series has the best collection of alternative endings in my opinion, with so many differences effecting the outcome. Apart from that I can't really think of anything with that great a multiple ending...

No More Heroes
The regular ending has Travis being attacked while he's on the toilet.
The Real ending had me in stitches

The Mass Effect multiple endings were cool. Udina's speech at the end of the bad one gave me chills. I like that they at least attempted to give you a difficult choice, although the only time they did that successfully was in Bring Down the Sky.

Any of the Resident Evil games, Star Wars KOTOR I & II, Mass Effect, Grand Theft Auto IV, Fable I & II, are some of the games that I enjoyed enough to play through again to see the alternate endings.

I agree with orannis62 on Udina's line in the renegade ending, it's ironic how humanity ended up on top with the darker ending. I hope they handle those choices well in ME2, like they did in the KOTOR games.

First thing I did when I finished KotOR? Started again.
Absolutely. I go after dialogue trees like other people go after bonus items or achievements.

Given that my RP recently cracked the 50,000 word-count mark, it should be obvious that I like words. A lot.

I like games with multiple endings and branching storylines. TFU is a good example of what I *HATE* when it comes to multiple endings.

You play through a very linear game, get all the way to the end, and the last boss basically says "What ending do you want?" and you choose, and then tada, it's the end.

in TFU's case it's:

The emperor tells you to attack vader, and everyone else tells you to attack the emperor. If you attack the emperor, good ending, if you attack vader, evil ending. BAD choice there.

hated that.

It was like that in Star Wars: Jedi Academy too. You made a choice on the second to last level that decided what ending you would get. Yay.

I find it irritating when the ending you get is influenced solely by one dialog option at the end, and nothing else. E.G. Fable, Mass Effect, Deus Ex 2. If you're going to, as Zhoomout says, artificially lengthen your game, you should at least make it so that the player actually has to play the game again, and not just load the savestate you made before the final battle and click on something different. Bioshock was also terrible for this, but on the other end of the scale. You harvest one little sister to see what happens, and bam. You're a psychotic megalomaniac who wishes for nothing more than death, destruction, and six different types of rape for all humanity. It just doesn't make sense when you've been a paragon of virtue for the majority of the game.

I can't remember how it went in the Kotors. I think it drew from your affinity? Either way, there was enough difference in how you got there to make it worth replaying - there were several different roles Bastila alone could play - so it did manage pretty well.

I miss the endings from the old REs. They depended on the actions you made throughout the game. I hear Dead Rising didn't do it too badly, either.

Edit: Oh, I was beaten to the punch a little. Ah, well~

Most of the time. Depends on how re-playable the game is in the first place. If it's re-playable than alternate endings will be interesting tidbits.

Also agreed.
