The only game I remember the number vaguely well was GTA3, over 640,000 people killed...without cheats. High school sucked and I needed someone to take it out on, might as well have been a digital bumper on a digital person.

Dynasty Warriors! The goal in some instances is to *personally* kill more than 1000 people within 5 or 10 minutes...never mind how many other poor Three Kingdomes-era Chinese conscripts are being massacred!

Considering the core gameplay mechanic has you mindlessly slaughtering thousands per level, with so many levels played... Left 4 Dead.
Oooh, sounds like an RTS!

I'm going with Total War games. On top of killing a few hundred to a few thousand in every battle, there's the plagues, and don't forget when you decide to exterminate 3/4 of a settlement's population.

Is no one going to say the mortal kombat series? I mean, the overall deaths-per-play isn't that high, but then you figure how many people have played it, how long its been played, and how many sequels exist, and we're talking a fighting game series with piles of corpses under its belt.

Just about any RPG, especially if it involves level grinding.

I think I lost track of the number of people I killed in Fallout 3. I killed hundreds of bandits in Fable and that one isn't even that long.

But Prototype is likely the game I killed the most people. I used to spend an hour or more running up and down sidewalks carrying a car and killing everyone in my path. Occasionally I'd steal a tank to vary it up a bit.

Sins of a Solar Empire, the smallest ship has some odd 100 people on it and the largest has over 200,000. Not to mention the Trillions of people you bomb the heck out of when you take over a planet. If you go ahead and try the longest campaign it has about 5 solar systems which each have about 30 planets in them and with the full amount of AI they all usually end up being full. Now there is an average of 3 trillion people per colony, and if you times that by 30 then by 5.... thats alot of death, its 4500000000000, thats 45 times the amount of ants on the earth

I'd hedge bets on the X series.

Corvette class ships with crews numbering the hundreds, Frigates with crews in the thousands, Destroyers and Carriers numbering hundreds of thousands and Battleships with crews to the upper end of the hundred thousands, sometimes carrying over into the millions.
Stations inhabited by tens of millions of people and so on.

If you're feeling mean and decide to invade with a fleet, you can easily wrack up a population kill count of hundreds upon hundreds of millions of people in about half an hour.

In terms of one person slaughtering many people, the Saints Row series. Character gets a head start with a dozen bodies per game right off the bat from story. Then you can kill any ramdom person on the street for lookin' at you funny.

Torn between L4D and CoD (any of them).

L4D has campaigns about an hour long where you kill between 1000-2000 zombies, but CoD has many more players and you get 75 kills each 7 minute match. Not to mention the numerous game modes.

if only the player doing the killing counts Dynasty Warriors or GTA
if its the story doing the killing that's a different can of worms entirely

What games do you think have the highest death tolls?

My choices are the Left 4 Dead Series, and every Total War game ever. Obscene casualty rates.
Global Thermonuclear War
I kill millions in mere seconds
**reads about defcon**
...must... get... it...

On the note of all these shooters and things, I'm suprized no one has named any RTS games, think about how many die

Take starcraft can you remember all the times you've had 24-60 zerg die in an attack on a terran defence

only to do it again
and again
and again

...also on a Flash Game note; Pandemic 2
the whole point is to kill all humans, and considering there's like 6 billion in the game, I think that trumps everything you guys have named

Super Mario Bros
Think about it, how many times have you died in that game?
2... 3 times?

oh you mean classic mario?!

oh, well as a kid, 4-5 dozen easy
now
only on rare occasion when I screw up big time

...or when I'm playing 8-3 with all enemies replaces as hammer bros while playing as Ryu Hayabusa just so I can make ego raptor jokes

EDIT: No wait

Spore

I can destroy whole PLANETS at a time

(same in the first Galactic Civilizations game too...)

How many mobs do you have to kill in WoW to grind to level 85......yeah.
Not sure why nobody else seems to have picked up on this. Each of my characters had killed tens of thousands, with some passing into the hundreds of thousands. That's pretty heavy counts for a medieval setting.

Fallout 3, as we know Raider encampments spawn infinitely so theoretically with enough patience you can get an infinite number of people killed in your Pip-Boy...ergo Fallout 3 has the highest body count..

GOW 3 because he fucks the world up by killing those gods. Though those deaths are kind of inadvertent.

Gears of War 2, id say. the level where you ride the Brumak has you killing thousands of enemies every few minutes
