So lets make a list for him. Because we can. Not to review, but to enjoy so he can save all his hatred for the next zelda game.
Firstly, as an RPG nerd, most of mine will be rpgs. But i will try to avoid the ones with turn based combat for the most part.
---
Lost Kingdoms 1+2, though more likely 2, since one had annoying battles that took place in limited areas, but overall it was a lot of fun and a lot of monsters were pretty unique. There is one card you get later on that breaks the final boss over its knee though.
Quest 64: "If you want a story, there's not a lot of that" which is odd for an rpg but the gameplay was unique and fun once you got the hang of it, and unlike most rpgs where a points system is implimented, you actually have to train your stats mid battle. IE taking hits to increase defense, utilizing your movement range to increase it etc.
I have to include Disgaea, because the characters are fun, the stats actually differ from character to character depending on reincarnation and weapon levels, the obscenely broken item world will either let you level, or send you back to the load screen depending on individual intelligence and sheer ability to know when your warrior is screwed and start using your mage to finish the damn things off instead of healing. On top of that there are multiple endings but rather than being black and white good or evil there are like 7 endings depending on how many allies you kill and what extra levels you complete, etc.
On the note of multiple endings i'd also say Nocturne. Yes its turn based but the dark twisted story and lovable(sometimes) characters make up for it. It's almost like pokemon, except with demons and real sorts of evil running about in something that doesn't resemble pajamas.
Lastly Mischief Makers. It was a platformer for the 64, but the means of platforming weren't either jumping on things, or rolling into things, or shooting things. Its actually based around grabbing and throwing things. Doesn't sound like much but you'd be amazed how much fun it actually is. There's also boss battles that will either beat you with the stick of low self esteem or be finished within a minute flat with almost no damage. And believe me when i say when you find the former rage-quitting will happen a lot and you may have to restrain yourself from throwing the cartridge into a nearby intersection.
So the list so far stands at
Lost Kingdoms
Lost Kingdoms 2
Quest 64
Disgaea
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Mischief Makers
feel free to add your own. Hi Yahtzee!
