Ah thanks bud. Yeah i've never played one. And i can imagine that the writing in that sort of thing is always going to have a pretty...shall i say 'varied'...level of acceptability. Are they any good, the well written ones that is?
Very, depending on what you're looking for, setting and writing-wise (the more plot-heavy games vary considerably based on author), and your tolerance of certain concepts.

I'd probably just say "look to my reviews," but...that likely wouldn't be helpful. My personal favorites include <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.128851-TYPE-MOON-reviews-Tsukihime>Tsukihime (supernatural/psychological horror with slice-of-life), <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.135672-Neutral-Drow-reviews-A-Drug-That-Makes-You-Dream>A Drug That Makes You Dream (realistic fiction, bit of a commentary piece, too), and <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.163769-Neutral-Drow-reviews-Kanon>Kanon (just...light and emotional, really).

Some of the more famous ones that are also extremely good are <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.206764-Neutral-Drow-reviews-Kana-Little-Sister>Kana: Little Sister (widely and rightly-known for being heart-wrenching) and <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.223721-TYPE-MOON-Review-anniversary-Fate-Stay-Night>Fate/Stay Night (modern fantasy; epic in scope...and length).

To be honest, yes.
The first game, much to my horror, was nothing but a constant visual assault. The pictures were not that well drawn, and it was mostly porn.
So not the kinda "game" I like. Worst first VN ever >.>
However, Yin-Yang is actually pretty well drawn. A hell of a lot better than the first X-Change game.
And there is a ton less porn. It focuses more on actually making the story better. The story managed to make me cry in the first few minutes >.>
It cuts out a lot of the crap, and made it into something a lot better.
To be honest, it wasn't the artwork or the sex that <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.130703-Neutral-Drow-reviews-Xchange>I hated about the first game. It was the absolutely infuriating bad endings, and the fact that literally 80% of the sex was rape.

zidine100 said:
heh avoid it if your playing it for the plot, the story is a mediocre excuse for a porn fest such as any of the Xchange series.
I've seen "plot's an excuse for sex" way too often to be deterred by it. If there's less rape than in the first (few, apparently) games, I'm willing to look it up.

I mean, I'm gonna be playing The Sagara Family, for cripes sake. I rarely go sex romp-type games, but they're an occasional interest.

kanna little sister. i know its got porn in it but hell..
fate + tsukihime (same as above.)
Some of the games I've moved way beyond shame for, in fact.

Djmax, the music is so annoying but its so adicting,
Wait, is that <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVXNnWVIIGE>that Technika game? I love that one. Still trying to beat a hard mode lineup...

Don't let the Spongebob title and the game's poor humor, dialogue, story, and graphics fool you: It's very fun.

Varying gameplay, replay, a lot of content in order to get that 100% completion, different environments, enemies, weapons.

If you see this in a bargain bin, try it out.

well theres rape involved, i don't know if there's more than the first one, as ive never brought myself to play that one, but yes there's rape. And some endings devoted to it, aka the maid route (which is softer than what im expecting from the the first one according to your post), or the school slave route (which is somewhat screwed up).

geh i hate to admit to have played this myself, but hey i didnt love it so its not on my list......

A Drug That Makes You Dream (realistic fiction, bit of a commentary piece, too)

damnit how could i have forgotten to mention this one, great another one to add to my list of shame.

Wait, is that that Technika game? I love that one. Still trying to beat a hard mode lineup...
well its the portable versions that ive got, but yes its that game, ive nearly broken my psp buttons playing it so.. i wont be doing anything with that for a while.

if were going with suggestions im throwing my hat into the ring right now....*throws hat* (also on a side note, i cant recommend kana enough (if ofcourse you can get past the whole sister thing) dont worry about the cover, one of the main thing that set alarms off on my head before i checked it out, all characters are over age (at least in the english version, and thats the only knowledge ive got) when you in fact, get there flag(...bad joke...))

heres a list of all the good ones that ive come across which arent mentioned above and which i would recomend

ever 17
remember 11 (recently translated, keep in mind you can die by drinking coffee at the wrong time, lets just say you going to die alot)
narcissu 1 + 2 (play the first one first, even thought the seconds a prequel its better that way, lets just say... you will cry.... alot. Infact this one is free, id post a link, but i dont know if that would be classed as advertising here, so just look it up yourself.)
Planetarian
kira kira (non adult version available) (don't play curtain call, its a joke, and don't go in expecting real punk either (note it isnt up to the standards of the above in my views, but it was damn good.))
clannad (not a good starter vn (due to well, difficult to get the translation working, at least i found it difficult when i did it), but if you like being pushed off the deep end go ahead, but damn is it awesome, difficult though to get the true good ending.)

and a few on my to play list, which ive heard alot good about them.

true rememberance
phantom of the inferno (dvd)
hourglass of summer (dvd)

note these are all non h, or have non h versions. and yes i know some of these are kinetic novels, but there just vns without the choices so it doesnt really matter all to much.

ehm.... for me being ashamed of playing vns, i sure play alot of them heh.

and holy hell did i get of topic, i apologize.

Beats me. It's been over a year, and <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PSfz_60XcQ>I still haven't forgotten it.

I'd say you make Aeka sad for forgetting, but two others have already made her sadder. <color=red>They paid for it dearly, oh yes, they did...

Wait, is that that Technika game? I love that one. Still trying to beat a hard mode lineup...

Huh, didn't know it had a portable release. Another addition to my list of reasons to get a PSP (along with Fate/Unlimited Codes, Tales of Versus, and Dissidia).

EDIT: Huh. I have all those other ones in my "To Play" list (which is over twenty titles deep), but I hadn't realized Planetarian had been translated. Good to know!

Also, I've technically started Hourglass of Summer, and it's only the crapload of promise on the part of the prologue (honestly, I knew what was coming, and it was still chilling) that's keeping me with it. Playing on an interactive DVD is incredibly annoying.

Vampire Rain. Possibly every reviewer said that the game was terrible both story and game play wise but when I played it I thought that it was one of the better games I had ever played

I would say... DDR, Guitar Hero... and, sorta, the Atelier series. I very much enjoyed Atelier Rorona, even though the 3D character models where absolutely horrible.

remove unlimited codes, its not worth it, and just play crucis fatal fake (note crucis, not just fatal fake), its just a better version of it with tag team battles, to the point where some of the attacks use the same combos from unlimited codes.

I refuse.

Technically, I already own F/UC. Played it when it first came out in Japan, imported the PS2 version when I got home. I've never been disappointed in it. It's the subject of <url=http://www.gamefaqs.com/arcade/944100-fate-unlimited-codes/faqs/55553>the only FAQ I've written. With the PSP version, I'd basically just be paying ten or so bucks to finally have the story in English and cry over how badly I translated the movelist.

my bad i thought you were getting it for the game play and not the story, in all fairness i just hate the analogue stick on the psp, hence why i just don't like fighting games on it, probably colors my opinion on that one just a little bit.

also on a side note, i may have gotten my games muddled up earlier, there is no maid route in that one if i remember rightly. (hell it was late at night when i posted that one)

I wouldn't say love, but I did enjoy LAIR, on PS3. I didn't really play through the missions again, I just got a dragon and went to the training grounds where I could just fly around and be inspired by the amazing flight animations.

Pokemon.

I get a lot of flak for playing those games. Can't a 33 year old man have fun with cute little monsters?

/sadface
Pokemon Soulsilver is great. My gf has Heartgold and we are very sad together.

OT: Alpha Protocol, because fuck you it's great.

The No More Heroes series. There's just something so satisfying about slashing a Wii mote through enemies and filling the entire screen with lovely cell shaded blood.

This is gunna sound fairly noobish but what do you guys mean by VN's?
Hsss....An unbelvier! Fellow VN player we need to purge the heathans!

Sorry...Erhm.

VN's are Visual Novels AKA: Eroges, Bishoujo games and gal games(I think the last ones applies to Otome games.) are baseicly. Hmm...I dont know how to explain it and i cant come up with a good explanation either. You should ask Neutral Drow he will certainly help you out.

EDIT: I just got ninja'd by some kind of crab...Just check out the Wiki page.
There are a couple of VNs which aren't based on dating virtual characters or watching hentai. A couple at the very front of my mind would be Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and Umineko no Naku Koro ni, as well as Shakugan no Shana =/

I would say Fat princess only because my old school sensibilities tell me its just another casual game. But I say screw it, the only thing Im ashamed about is I didnt believe my kid sister earlier when she told me it was absolutely awesome.

While there are indeed points that make me facepalm, I am only slightly ashamed to admit that I enjoy Final Fantasy X-2 enough to have sunk well over 100 hours into it. Yeah, it's got a lot of dumb points, but by god, it is pure fin everywhere else, and that's one of the major functions a game should serve.

Thanks for all the recommendations. On my iPhone so haven't had a chance to check them out. Will do once I'm near my computer.
