Red Dead... I hated that killing your horse was a crime (this is my biggest complaint).
Wouldn't have been such a problem but for the parallax aiming problems from the first Third-person perspective, you could clearly aim past the horses head but the actual path of the "bullet" (actually a hitscan line) is to the left or right and down. They could have fixed this, made the bullets clip through your horse head as who ever wants to shoot their horse in the head WHILE RIDING IT!
Honestly, I had never even thought about shooting your horse while riding it, but now that I know I can't do that, I'm mad. Whenever I got frustrated with my horse, I got off and shot it in the head on the spot, so I really didn't appreciate that this was a five dollar fine. In all honesty, my favorite thing to do in the entire game was to find where the cougars lived and laugh as they came out of nowhere and killed my horse in one swipe. One random touch about Gun (Gun was better than RDR) that I loved was that if you spurred your horse too much, it would die on the spot. I don't like horses.
Hmm, bold seems like an understatement considering everything else.

RDR really doesn't seem like the game for you, as it's a cowboy game and that is all about horse riding and enjoying that. I accept it's dishonourable murdering your horse but even a cowboy knows sometimes it's the honourable thing to shoot your horse like if it's lame and suffering. And the game doesn't even distinguish if it's an accident.

PS: I think at least Niko Bellic passes the Red-letter-media characterisation test. that is, be able to describe a character without listing their physical attributes nor specific role in the plot.

From what I can tell after a quick read, only basic grammar issues. 'P', as it is the start of a sentence for one. 'I' is always in capitals, assuming you are using it to refer to yourself.

As for the lore being confusing, that is what the extra conversation options were there for. You don't know what Protheans are? You were given an opportunity to ask. Not good if your looking for a fast paced game, with little want for an in depth world and such, but if you play through wanting to learn about the story and the world, and picking the options that tell you about it, and reading the Codex, it is pretty good.

Bishock was special because of the political intrigue, it's weird that no one mentions that in place of "atmosphere" and "combat". Andrew Ryan was also an incredibly rich and interesting character in how he was a completely oblivious massive hypocrite.

As for Niko, I guess I will describe him as "a Serbian war refugee who escapes the violence of his homeland in search of the American dream, only to find disappointment when he realizes that the same violence exists in America as well." I suppose that applies as characterization under your criteria, but all that is established in the first few missions, and the remaining 90% of the game is essentially just him doing random stuff to make money with only token references to some poorly explained drama back in Serbia. If this is all presented seriously and we are supposed to be earnestly interested in the story, then this level of characterization is not even close to sufficient for Rockstar's aims

all CoDs after WaW
World Of Warcraft (i thought it was really good, just not enough to pay monthly for, but if it went f2p id lose a social life)
Mass Effect 2 (again a very good game, but not as good as others say, and certainly not as good as the first)
Oblivion- again fantastic, really really fantastic and ive spent hundreds of hours playing it but i thought morrowind was much better
RockStar games ie GTA and Red dead. i HATE the controls with a passion, if they were better then maybe i would understand what the fuss was about but atm i dont see it
all Final Fantasy games- i dont like JRPGs. not my thing so i really cant tell why this series is so venerated

Battlefield 3.

People act like the multiplayer is constantly amazing and interesting, but when I play it, things go pretty much like this.

1.Spawn at side of map farthest from objective.
2.Walk for about 5 minutes to the objective.
3.Get killed as soon as you walk in the vicinity of objective.
4.Repeat.

But I guess it's the "true gamer's" choice, so everybody has to like it or else.
people who say all they do in bf3 is spawn miles away from the objective and get killed repeatably are playing it badly wrong, its like playing mario without using the jump button and saying this is terrible i always fall down pits!
how you play is you get some friends together in a team kick back have fun banter with each over and use teamwork to take the objective (most importantly spawn on each over) and hopefully the other team will also be full of decent players and you can have a tough hard fought battle
or you get against the team that spawns at their base on offense take 5 minutes to reach you and walk cluelessly up to the objective to get shot like a duck at a target range, this repeats for ages and makes a boring game for everyone
by all means hate it for flaws in the game (like being snipe friendly, camp friendly and slow paced) but dont hate it because you suck at it
But that reminds me of when Yahtzee got a letter saying that he should have enjoyed SSBB more with friends who like the game. The whole point is enjoyment, and I can't enjoy myself when the rest of my team is made up of people who are either:
1. 10 year olds from Call of Duty who just want to shoot everything they see.
2. Veterans who shoot people from 2 miles away and ruin the game for newcomers like me.
Now, your opinion is just that, but I like a game that let's new players enjoy the game as much as the vets. I mean, I never played Team Fortress 2 until last year, and I freaking loved it. Also, can you please capitalize at the beginning of sentences, it's really getting on my nerves trying to read your post.

I'm not going to put a game down here that I think is over-rated, because it's none of my business what other people think of a game. What I will ask however is why it matters?

Comments like "I'm not sure why Halo is rated so highly in it's fandom" are just moot. It's because they are fans of the game, they enjoy that particular game/art style or the story. Much the same with Bioshock, Mass Effect or indeed any other highly rated game.

I dare say that the reason they are highly rated is because the majority likes them. Sure you may not like them, it might not appeal to you. At the end of the day it's pointless, because you are not going to like it no matter what anyone else says.

Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if this thread gets made again in 2-3 weeks.
I agree wholeheartedly, and thank you. Truth be told, I think I'm done with threads and discussions like this... But I'm here anyway so why not fart in the elevator and get off on the next floor.

"Why is X so popular, its derivative, boring and its fans are idiots! Grrr!"No,these are all just opinions which are subject to change. I hated halo when it first came out, however I just bought halo anniversary and I loved it. People change and opinions change. The games, music, books and movies you hate today could quite easily become your favourites in a few short years. How many of still listen to every band the way you used to? How many of you still eat the same food or even hang out with the same people?

All your opinions are complete horsehit, just like mine. Don't waste your time angrily typing your ire and disgust into a herpes-thread (because it always comes back! ba-dum-tish). Instead do something you enjoy. I just finished playing psychonauts, now I'm gonna order a pizza, distract Koda (my husky) away from said pizza with a dog biscuit and watch Red vs Blue. Happy trails everyone.

The most overrated game of all time is Final Fantasy 7. By far.

It's a formula JRPG that hit just at the right time when the people who grew up on video games were turning into teenagers and started to take notice of the genre, so it became a massive phenomenon, but there's really nothing about it that hasn't been done better by Final Fantasies before or since, not to mention other games. I loved the game, but it's not the timeless classic people claim it to be.

Every GTA game.

It was basically the juvenile fantasy hitting that same age group I mentioned before just at the right time. It's worn out its welcome and has started to taper off, and rightly so in my opinion. I mean they're decent open world games, but the controls are immensely clunky, stories are mediocre at best, and there's no real replay value or randomness that makes it feel different on subsequent playthroughs.

Halo and its ilk.

They are solid, formula FPSs. No more, no less. The phenomenon was one of timing (it being an Xbox launch title) than it being an outstanding game.

All of the ones I listed I would give 7-8/10 to in any sort of retrospective review. They are good, they sometimes had interesting features, but they're more a product of timing than they are of being an actually good game.

Gun better than RDR? Do you prefer the 61 beatles to the sgt peppers beatles? Dont get me wrong, Gun was a very good game at the time, but RDR is just better in every single way. I just tried going back to gun, and the controls are facking awful, like maddeningly awful. when the last time you played gun? If it hasnt been for a while, then I suggest you leave it that way, good memories are often better left alone
I last played Gun about four years ago, I remember some problems with gun/item selection, but that's about it. I liked the combat- simple but with enough style and variety- and I remember the story being an enjoyably ridiculous mix of elements and I remember it being short and fun.

I don't remember RDR's controls to be a highlight. I thought the open world was more realistic and detailed in RDR but that it was mostly dead space. I thought the story was thin and uninteresting and much too long and that with few exceptions, the characters were a drag on what little story there was (I include John Marston in this category). I don't like cover combat and RDR's so-so mechanics didn't help that. I didn't like any of the travel options, which really rubbed me the wrong way when combined with the size of the map. RDR has a higher budget and benefits from better technology, and this clearly shows in the game, but there were many design choices that really dragged the game down for me. There is without a doubt some nostalgia in my opinion of Gun, but nonetheless, I like it more than RDR.

I'd also choose five songs by the Kinks over the entirety of the Beatles' output

I recently watched a lovely epic movie. It had been out for a few years, so I wanted to see what the fuss had been about. It was a little long, and the plot had something incomprehensible regarding snakes and nanomachines, I can't quite recall, but it was rather fun as a whole. Nevertheless, there were these strange moments from time to time where I was forced to push a few buttons on my remote to make the movie carry on. I was quite upset, but thankfully these were over quickly and the movie could carry on. Imagine my surprise though when I saw this movie receive vast acclaim in the category of video game.

Thats sort of the example I thought of now when reading this topic.

I could just list every popular mass market and cult game here but ill just list a few:-

FFVI/VII/IX - just listing these three as they seem to get the most attention and while I loved playing all 3 especially VI and VII they dont deserve all the praise they get (or hate either actually but thats usually at VII because it has/had the most market penetration while VI and IX tend to have more cult followings).

Baldurs Gate series - I liked the 2nd part but not the first even though I can tell there is a great game in there somewhere but again its massively overrated.

Portal - Really good game that gets more praise than it deserves.

Zelda Ocarina of Time - this took me a while to get into as I hated it on release but played it years later and actually enjoyed it but I really cant see why its so highly rated even among the Zelda series A Link to the Past is a much better game in design no matter how you slice it (others can also be argued to be better as well imo), while Ocarina is just a good solid game nothing more.

GTA3 onwards - actually this could be all Rockstar games from GTA3 onwards I have tried most of them (borrowed from friends) and I am always underwhelmed it seems they just build a big open world then try and find something interesting to do in it (and fail) I just dont see the appeal at all here and yet every GTA released is now the best game ever much like.....

Modern Warfare - I must admit I had fun with COD4 and MW2 in the multiplayer but its cheap throwaway fun after 40 hours or so between both games I was done the game dosent go anywhere and the single player on both was yawn inducing and just a chore to play yet now if you play games you play MW and possibly GTA much like if you live in Japan you watch anime or if your from the UK you love football.

Mortal Kombat - This used to really piss me off back in the day when it first came out and people were comparing it to SF2 I just thought seriously how is it comparable in any favourable way it plays horribly and it looked crappy (not graphics wise but due to poor art direction) and yet almost everyone was raving about it one way or the other, how this terrible series is still going is beyond me. A very overrated game if ever there was one (and by extension series although that is only a guess as I have only tried 3 MK games and that was 3 too many).

Half-Life 2: I'll admit it's a good game, I liked playing it, but I can't say I was blown away by it or that I found it to be truly amazing. I guess it's due to when you play it; I first played it in 2011, but it was ahead of its time when it first came out, and if I played it back then I would have had a better opinion of it. But since I played games that have take HL2's ideas and made them better (well most of them), I can't give it the praise everyone else has.

Call of Duty: Until they actually try something new, rather than adding a single game mode in, or putting in a weapon with new mechanics that noone uses anyway, I also don't see my opinion getting any better. Wager Matches in Black Ops were a good idea, but by not allowing you to rank up with them made them useless in my opinion. You can earn money with them, but that's all you could gain. I enjoyed playing them nonetheless. They also should have allowed you to rank up while playing Zombies, that would add to your multiplayer rank. By not doing this, all we do is play the same modes and rank up with them like we've done since CoD4.

GTA IV: While the realism was appealing when I first played it, I found it to be boring. So boring, that it took me almost half a year to beat it, because I invested very little time in it. Really, the realistic rag dolls were all the GTA series needed.

GTA III: My first GTA games were games that came after this one. So playing this one feels like a step back, much like with Half-Life 2. Once again I admit that this is a great game. You get to kill people within the first mission or two unlike GTA IV, and I respect that the game gets right to the good stuff quickly.

Cowboys without horses is like max-max without cars.

In fact, mad-max swap out the cars for horses and you've got cowboys.

(you shouldn't take out frustration on creatures that break their back trying to help you, that's worryingly sociopathic. Take it out on the bad guys)

"a Serbian war refugee who escapes the violence of his homeland in search of the American dream, only to find disappointment when he realizes that the same violence exists in America as well." I suppose that applies as characterization under your criteria
Nope, you've just looked at the plot of the character. You fail to mention any (lack of) inherent things about him that you might say "oh Niko wouldn't do that, it's so out of character".

You are entitled to your opinion that he isn't very well characterised but I can't really see why you hold that position. You just seem to be repeating it in various different ways without any explanation nor comparison or contrast. In other words, it's JUST an opinion, not an argument. So I can't dispute what you are saying as you know your own opinion better than anyone, but it isn't convincing anyone.

Example: contrast the characterisation of Niko with, say, CJ from San Andreas, or another character you might say is well characterised.

Half Life 2. Whenever i try to play it i just go sick. It feels so forgettable for me.. The guns are boring and lack power (the gravgun is getting old).
Though it is ironic i hate HL2, when the game i play the most is "Garry's Mod", a mod of HL2.
