Share your war stories! These are the moments that make every gamer a little cynical. Ever read about a game online or in a mag and then find out it wasn't at all what you thought it would be? I want to hear about it. I'll start with one. When I was about 14, I started reading about Army of Two for the 360. The A.I. was supposed to be amazing. Your partner would respond to everything you did. If you happened shoot a dog (for whatever reason) your partner would hit you and get pissed. You'd forge a connection with the guy, he would be the last thing standing between you a bullet. A few years later I go out and end up with an incredibly average game. The A.I. was about as amazing as a 5th grade math student. Sure you and your partner fought together, but he also walked into the line of fire....a lot. So yes, definitely not what I expected.

Final Fantasy XII. All I'm going to say was that it just wasn't fun. At all.

Also, I'm Captain Basch fon Ronsenburg of Dalmasca. Don't believe Ondore's lies!

Sonic Heroes was the moment when I first began to fear for my childhood friend. I never even beat it, and the games that followed made me weep in mourning.

Golden Axe: Beast Rider. It obviously had production value behind it, and had some interesting game play ideas but on the whole it just didn't work.

Dragon Age. Being a big fan of Baldur's Gate, I was looking forward to the game touted as its spiritual successor for ages, and I picked it up the day it came out.

I couldn't pin down one reason why I couldn't get into, the world did not appeal to me particularly, I was annoyed at how they'd designed the elves (who I usually tend to play in fantasy games that let me). And the bad voice acting spoiled my sense of immersion.

Also I think I've spoiled myself by playing too many action games, the idea of pausing whilst I set all my characters to do various abilities and spells just doesn't appeal to me anymore, I want to actually aim my bow and time my attacks myself etc.

Makes me sad, because I'd even set aside a few free days so I could really pour myself into it, I ended up having to go outside and interact with the real world.

Brink

That was just... ugh.
Same here. I had to put the game down for a bit and lower my expectations to a reasonable level so I could play it again. But now I find it enjoyable since I'm not expecting it to be the pinnacle of gaming i thought it would be.

Most recently was Brink, but most spectacularly was Halo: Reach.
I feel real bad for my friend though, got the super special 160$ edition.

Spore... A THOUSAND TIMES, SPORE!

If you watched that game over its development cycle, it was just like some roller coaster ride of awesome with a giant BRICK WALL OF SUCK at the end. I remember being so enthralled by it at its first showing at E3, and then gradually watching stages get cut out, features being cut out, and an overall graphical style change that took it from my own little petri dish, to some horrid abomination with rainbow-vomit color schemes painted over.

I think of this game still, and cringe. Remember when it was a game about evolution? Remember how it quickly became "intelligent design"? And then just a monstrous load of shit? Bleh, ugh, ergh... *spit*

Seriously. I could go on forever. I hate the monster that game became.

Crackdown 2. God dammit....they clearly put effort into making that a terrible game. Reusing the same map from the original? Check. Taking out all of the fun/interesting boss fights? Check! Taking out the different gangs with different personalities and fighting styles and replacing them with one boring gang and more zombies? DOUBLE CHECK!

Alone In the Dark
I had just gotten a subscription to GI and I decided to follow the development of a couple games that had been announced in one of their editions. I followed the game, up until about an hour after I put it into my Wii.

After that, I never put a lot of hope into games
So Homefront, Brink, etc. didn't effect me at all.

Pokemon Diamond/Pearl. Way too much of it was a rehash of the previous generation, very little in terms of new mechanics, and the first gym was Rock, AGAIN!!!!

Epic Mickey - Not nearly as dark as advertised, disappointingly few levels, morality element was way underplayed, and no backtracking.

Dragon Age 2 (maybe this doesn't count cause I read the reviews prior and decided to rent instead of buy but I put this here mainly because of the fact the CUTSCENES didn't work right even though they worked right for the demo. Talking about playing the game on SDTV with the 360, all the cut scenes are messed up ratio wise.

I guess Falllout: new vegas didn't' live up to my expectations but it was still a very good game. Just not great.

Odd, I thought I would have more... I get very hyped up about games and can't wait for them. But I guess because I usually read a lot of comments and reviews before I buy a game so even if it didn't live up to the hype I still am very satisfied by it. (Alpha Protocol not as good as it could have been but still found the game very fun.) I also rent games a lot so it is less annoying than buying ones. (Off topic- this is probably the biggest advantage of consoles over pc gaming. Is the ability to rent games...) Maybe, I'm just good at rationalizing the previous choices I made or something though.

I'll probably be accused of getting my hearing aid tangled in my walker for this answer, but... The 11th Hour

The worst one for me was back around 2001 or 2002. I was a big fan of SaGa Frontier, and thought Unlimited SaGa was gonna be the best thing ever.

But then I got a mess of a game with ugly graphics for the time (or any other time) and truly horrible combat. I could not finish the opening area, and quickly took it in for a trade-in.

That was when I first started doubting Square. Oh, how those doubts have been realized.

More recently? I thought I would love it, but I disliked Dragon's Age:Origins enough that I never finished it.

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit that released last year. I thought it was going to be good like the first one but it got boring in about an hour.

That's the only game that comes to mind at the moment.

Dragon Age 2 was the first time I was ever unhappy with a game I actually purchased. I'm careful, i read reviews, I listen to community feedback, but nothing prepared me for how little about DA2 I found to be engaging. I've actually sworn off day-1 purchases since then.
