Metroid Muthafucking Prime! It was so different from all the other Metroid games. At first I thought, FPS on Metroid? Probably gonna be shit. My mom got me this game for my 14th birthday and didn't even ask for it. Was shocked at how much detail the game had and how easy the FPS controls were. The combat never got old and scanning was addictive.

inFAMOUS i didnt expect it to be good from the adds i was seeing on tv. so when i went on vacation to my dads and saw that he had it i shrugged and said what the hell. 15 hours later the game was beat and i had had my mind blown. so i immediately started my good run through but didnt get to finish it.. so when my mom got me a ps3 for christmas later that year the first game i bought was inFAMOUS and the rest was history.

Mirrors Edge

I wasn't really sure what to expect with that game, but now it's become one of my favourites.

Crysis 2:
I thought it was just another mindless shooter with fancy gizmos (and in a way it was :p), but I was surprised at how fun and functional it was to play. Short, but a real treat.

Enslaved:
I waited quite a long time to pick it up. It seemed to me that good acting couldn't really make up for lackluster gameplay (what I heard from friends). But it was in fact very playable, with a very decent story and fun puzzles. I really liked it.

BlackSite: Area 51. Everyone said it was pretty bad, but after I beat it, I found it pretty enjoyable.

Mafia II also. I didn't have any interest in it, got it for free with my last graphics card, and then the Steam treasure hunt (or one of those things) came around. I played it to complete the task, but also found the game pretty good, and found time to finish it.

Shadow of the Colossus. I'd never heard of it before, but friend let me borrow it and I put it in the disk tray thinking, "So there's only 16 enemies in the entire game? Well that's shit!".

After 5 seconds of play; my jaw collided with the floor, where it remained for the rest of the session. I loved it so much, I finished it in two days of (almost) non-stop play.

I got The World Ends With You from a friend and thought it would be terrible but I actually really enjoyed it. Not necessarily unique but it was enjoyable.

Batman Arkham Asylum

Bought the 3D game of the year addition for like $20 brand new at EBgames and I figured it'd suck (since all superhero games tend to). I was BLOWN AWAY! by how good of a game it is compared to what I was expecting, now I am waiting for Arkham City!

Destroy All Humans.

The gameplay and writing was fantastic. The voice acting was pretty good, too. Richard Horvitz made the game more "Invadery" with his Zim voice, too. It's just the little things that made the game all the better.

A friend recommended Oblivion, me having never heard of the Elder Scrolls series before, so I started it up feeling... well, expectant that it would just be a generic fantasy, and loved it.
On a slightly older note, Shadow of Memories for the PS2 was MUCH better than I expected - picked it up really cheaply because the blurb made it look interesting even though it was years old even then, and found that even dated graphics don't hinder immersion when the story's that interesting.

Darksiders kind of took me by surprise. Picked it up for cheap, and had a blast.
I can't wait for the sequel.
Me too, borrowed from a friend and enjoyed the hell out of it, hey if you're going to rip God of War off may as well do a good job

All of the Half Life games. I got them on a Steam sale as they were what ?3 a piece and because of all the fuss made about them and their impact on FPS games. To be honest I was expecting a game series that would not stand up to the test of time and be a piece of shit made good via nostalgia. While the magic of the First and its ilk may have been lost on me I still really enjoyed them a lot but Half Life 2 ended up being one of the best games I played in a long time.

To be honest the only things that actually made the game bad in my opinion were the bugs. As when I was fighting the big beetle a bug kicked in where it would only target me and never my squad mate which made it very hard to finish it off with the rocket launcher.

Resistance 3, I didn't expect to like it at all but there is no regenerating health and you carry all your weapons at once (weapon wheel). And the guns, good god the guns, the guns are my favorite from every shooter I've ever played. Still waiting for Rage and Halo anniversary but resistance 3 was lovely little surprise.

I picked up "Jurassic Park Operation Genesis" for £5 thinking "Looks bad but its only a fiver... ah why not! Should distract me for 5 mins or be worth a laugh if its crap", ended up really enjoying it and sinking a lot of time in it.

Sure its flawed but did a decent job of simulating running a "real" Jurassic Park, was laid back enough to relax with and just challenging enough to avoid boredom, particularily once you get to higher stages and get all the toys to play with, jeeps, balloons etc.

Plus just watching your dinosaurs wander about doing thier business is strangely charming.
i personally liked putting them all in one big area and just fencing off my base made for some spectacular game play i wish they would make a sequel:(

OT: Rift i was a bit skeptical about playing it so soon after quitting wow but my friend told me to do the free trial and now i love it:)

Huh... they made a hack 'n' slash out of the .hack RPGs cool. Also (in case you didnt know) theres 2-3 .hack animes, a 4 part game series, a series of novels and a series of graphic novels.

The game i was amazed by was minecraft. I'd heard of it but never looked into it. Then a friend described it to me, and well he made it sound like possibly the most boring thing to ever exist.

few months down the line i go over to a friends and see him playing it, i was amazed and bought the game in the week. Have loved it ever since <3
