Games you didn't like... but finished anyway

Ever played a game that you didn't really care for but, for some reason, were determined to see through to the end?

Most recently I finished Shadow of the Colossus for the first time, having attempted to do twice before but having given up both times. I guess it just seemed like one of those games you have to get through at least once.

Some people complain about having to travel through the empty wastelands and deserts between each Colossus, but that I actually didn't mind. That's not to say the game didn't test my patience though. The Colossi, while impressive to behold, made for extremely monotonous enemies, your horse controls like it's drunk, high and sleep depraved and the ending was (for me, at least) extremely disappointing.

Also, and this is a pretty petty complaint, but the player character kind of looks like a twat, a twat to whom the concept of standing on his own two legs is apparently unfamiliar, if the animation is any indication.

Before that there was Borderlands, which I honestly couldn't tell you why I finished. The whole thing bored me to tears from start to finish. Bland guns, bland bad guys, a bland story that's blandly told and - dare I say it - bland art style. And all for what is possibly the worst ending to a game I've ever seen.

Most recently would be Assassin's Creed Revelations. It was just so bland, but I'm invested in the series and was determined to finish it.

Too Human. It was short enough to just finish, and I paid for it so I thought I'd get my money's worth. Kind of.

Star Wars: Force Unleashed, Halo CE Anniversary. Force Unleshed as it was very monotunous. I did like Halo CE Anniversary, but it got somewhat tedious after a while. I prefer games with a good story or varying gameplay. Straight-up shooters tend to bore me in SP if they don't have a good story and interesting/changing gameplay.

Supreme Commander 2. I HATE THE GAME WITH A BURNING PASSION! However,I beat the game for the sake of plot. Apparently, everyone forgot about Princess Burke,General Clarke, and only Doctor Brackman remembers QAI. On top of all of that, the UEF Colonel is a goddamn hybrid clone of Fletcher and Arnold!

So...I was determined to figure out where SupCom 2 figured into what the first game and it's expansion established. Turns out that SupCom 2 is in an alternate reality in Quantum Space.

Shadows of the Damned would have to be my pick.

Not that it's a bad game and I flat out hated it, it was actually pretty decent and it got a few good chuckles from me but damn, that aiming system nearly stopped me playing. Only my girlfriend persuaded me to keep on playing as it was her game she was lending me.

The Prince of Persia (2008) reboot got very repetitve fairly early on, but I soldiered on through it I guess because I liked the platforming just about enough...and then it spat in my face by making me undue everything I had worked to restore in the final act and ending on a cliffhanger...yeah, I'm fucking glad the planned trilogy for that incarnation never saw the light of day.

The original Gears of War.

I just cannot understand why the hell it was so popular. Chainsaws on Assault Rifles? The masses are so easily pleased.

Seriously, the first GoW had to be one of the most frustrating, annoying shooters I'd ever played. I could not get into it. It felt cheap some of the ways that I died, and it pissed me off to no end that somehow my guy had enough energy to yell, "REVIVE ME!" At the top of his lungs, but apparently not enough energy to slide across the floor to safety (which they added in GoW2, the best game of the three imo).

The only reason I beat it was because I'd paid good money for this piece of crap after hearing such praise for it, and I was at least going to get my money's worth out of it. Ended up feeling like I'd been screwed out of $40. It just sucked.

Oh, and Halo Wars. I knew it was a TBS, but I was at least expecting a DECENT TBS. That was just sad.

Super Paper Mario, Assassin's Creed. But what I can't say is that I actually disliked either game. Assassin's Creed was fun, but repetitive. Super Paper Mario had excellent controls, but its RPG elements did not mesh with its Platforming ones.

Assassins Creed 2. I had enough fun in the sidequests to complete the entire game (including getting all the achievements), but the main storyline completely destroyed any fondness for the game that the sidequests built up in me. It's not the worst game I've ever played, but it probably is my most hated because it completely wrecked a franchise that had so much potential and killed any interest I had in a series that I was so ready to love.

Plus, it makes me feel like I'm crazy that it's so widely considered a good game and an improvement on the first. What is wrong with people?!

Beyond Good and Evil

I'm not going to rant, but suffice to say I really, really did not like it. In fact, I disliked it so much that I decided I needed to finish it so that I could justify my intense loathing for the game if it ever came up in conversation.

Actually, yeah, that's the case. One of the few things directly stated about the backstory is that Wander stole the sword as part of his bid to "save" Mono. He wouldn't be familiar with how to use the sword. Jumping is also fairly understandable; most of us don't go around practicing our jumping in our spare time. And I honestly don't see what was so bad about his running animation. His clothes also look fairly practical to me; the only strange thing is the poncho/tunic, and we can chalk that up to a foreign way of dress.

I understand your complaints about the ending, though. A lot of people don't like ambiguity, and I can respect that, even if I like it.

How dare you have anything but lavish praise for SotC, grr, hiss, etc etc.

...

For me, it was Knights of the Old Republic. Horrible combat, horrible setting, mostly horrible dialogue, middling characters. I only kept going to see the big twist everyone kept talking about, which was admittedly good.

Rogue Galaxy. Oh my god!!! that game was horrible. Not the battle system. I liked the battle and level up system. The story (the ending/second part in more precise terms) was absolute trash. I never want to play that thing again.

Homefront. Only took 4 hours to beat, I was ready to stop playing it at that point, but then the credits started rolling and the game saved me the trouble.

Because the first got quite boring and repetitive with resrictive gameplay and horribly slow and chorish combat. Also Altair's personality was about as interesting as a plank of wood with knives strapped to it.

The only reason I enjoyed AC2 and played Brotherhood was because the story to AC2 was much more fun and intriguing.

Final Fantasy 12....
I can kind of agree with you on that. FF hasn't truly been that good since they've abandoned turn based combat. I don't mind the bar (what is it called APB bar?) that fills up so you know when it's your turn. Actually I like the TBCS of FFX best.
