I've owned it twice, and liked it neither times.
I bought it, played it, got bored really, really quickly; sold it.
Then a year later I bought it again with the Expansion packs, to play purely cooperatively online and offline, always with friends... and sold it before completion again.
Give me any RPG or MMO, and I'd enjoy it. Give me any Co-op game, and I'm 99% likely to enjoy it. I just hated Borderlands and I can't quite put my finger on it. I think it just felt tacky.
Actually, I hated Dead Island too - for the same reason. Just felt tacky. I got lost, saw the same zombie 3 times in the same pose at the same spot when I walked passed looking for the objective; so I turned it off and gave it away.
Oh, I shouldn't forget to mention Diablo, Devil May Cry and Final Fantasy games too.
Top-down is a less entertaining format for me; hack-and-slash grew repetitive and mundane, fast; and I just found them all moderately boring (except FFVII, that was tolerable) - respectively.
