Dragon Age: Origins is a clear winner for me. If I'd just pirated it, instead of buying it for 20 bucks, the piece of gaming history's biggest overhype would be long gone from my hard drive and Steam-account... I trudged it through, though, but only after discovering the broken leveling system thing, which allowed you to increase you stats ad infinitum. Other wise, not worth the effort.

The original Fallout. I though the first bit was boring as hell, but when I gave it another try and put some hours into it, I thought it was amazing.

Deus Ex, for pretty much the same reasons.

Since then I always give a game some time or a second chance before calling it bad or boring.

Morrowind and STALKER SoC.

Two of my most favorite games, but the very first time was hard/ unforgiving. Then you learn and start enjoying it soooooo much.

It's mass effect 1 for me, Played a few hours of it before i got bored and then sold it. Then Mass effect 2 came out and i thought it looked good, saw the first game for 10 euro, bought it,loved it, got the second one and Mass effect 2 now stands as my favorite game of all time.

mass effect 2.

i played the demo (not having played ME1) and just thought it was dull and bland. nothing interesting at all. then mass effect 1 and 2 went on sale on steam, i gave it a try, loved 1 to bits. tried 2 again, hated how different it felt. 2 months later tried it a third time, and fucking loved it.

Fallout 3 was mine.

I got it for 360 shortly after it was released, played it for 2-3 hours, thought "well this sucks" and never played it ever again on the Xbox.

2 or so years later I discovered it on Amazon for PC GOTY Edition for £13, so I thought I'd give it another chance (2 years before this point I didn't have a gaming PC to play it on). I ended up completing the main story, a bunch of the side missions, and the only DLCs I missed were Mothership Zeta and The Pitt, because Fallout DLC is just the worst in my opinion, but that's not relevant here.
Didn't play Point Lookout and Broken Steel did ya? You know, the ones actually worth it :).

Mass Effect - I wanted to love the game but couldn't get into it after trying the first 3 hours as three different classes. This was played on Xbox 360 at the time having borrowed the game from a friend.

A couple years later I bought the game dirt cheap off steam and this time I got into it. Aside from a good story, the game itself is still lackluster in my eyes. But I was able to tolerate the experience this time around.

I wanted to continue the story and so I picked up ME2 when it was very cheap and I absolutely loved it. For this reason I consider myself a fan of the series despite not having an overly positive experience with the original.

This would be Legend of Dragoon for me. Was always dying before I could make it to the next town because I couldn't heal, and grinding just to get passed the first area seemed unreasonable.

Then I realized the guard mechanic with the built in heal... MUCH easier then

The first witcher.
I played it before the enhanced edition and could not get into it. I hated it up to vizima outskirts and then quit.
Coming back to it when it came back on gog, I felt similar disdain for it but decided to push forward deeper into the vizima outskirt missions and fell in love with the game. The world, the characters and history all drew me in.

Now Iv read the books and played the witcher 2. I love the series.

I wasnt crazy about fallout: new vegas, it was the first fallout game i had played and i just didnt like it, as of writing i have 23 hours logged. its not a huge amount but i keep coming back for the lazers.

Also FF7, I got it home thinking it was FF8 (not realizing there was more than one of them in the series) i assumed Final fantasy meant FINAL FANTASY. so i was unhappy. 2 days later i started playing it... and the rest is history

The first Gears of War. Picked it up for cheap after hearing much gawking about it, played the first chapter and a half, and ended up just thinking the game boiled down to sitting behind cover for like 80% of the time that i played. Sold it a week later.

About 3 years later i decided to pick it up again just for the hell of it, and found the game to be much more fun than i had previously thought.

It took me three goes with months in between, but I got through it and came to the conclusion that I really liked it.

I hated Dragon Age: Origins the first time I played it. For some reason or another I decided to give it another chance and next thing I knew I had beaten it three times. It must be some kind of wizard.

I still hate it's combat though, my god it is boring. That's just my opinion though.
Agreed. I tried playing the game once, got frustrated with it and gave up, then started again a few months later and really enjoyed the story.

But yeah, the combat doesn't get any less tedious.

Metro 2033, because I was plonked down into the worst part of the game (That is, the Frontlines-level) and got frustrated.

Now, however, I really see Metro 2033 as one of my favorites, and I'm happy that I decided to give it a chance when I found it in the sales-bin.

Fallout 3.

The movement was clunky, graphics were underwhelming and I couldn't hit a single thing without VATS. I never touched the game for days until I read the instruction manual and started again.

It is now my favourite game of all time.

Dead Rising. I just could not get past that Isabella boss battle (the bit when she's on her motorbike). Eventually, I swallowed my pride, restarted (with the keep the same level thing), levelled up a bit more, got past her, and now the series is one of my favourites in gaming.

I hated Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass, the gameplay was fine but all the npcs I met were dumb unlikable twats. After a while I questioned why I was trying to save these people from their fate so I just stopped playing.
