The only game I've played with non-gamers is Portal 1 & 2 cos I find them to be quite accessible in comparison to many other games. The controls and objective is simple and easy to get accustomed to. Now my friend who doesn't play video games on a regular basis is finding it easier to learn other games.

Final point: If you want to introduce someone to gaming, I'd recommend Portal 1 then proceed with co-op on Portal 2.

I used to play a ton of Bomberman 64 multi-player with two non-gamers and two semi-non-gamers. It's the reason I like Bomberman 64 over the 2D Bomberman multi-player. They were 3 family friends (our parents, and ergo us, got together for holidays) and my brother. We'd usually either play variations of Hide-and-Seek inside and outside or we'd play Bomberman 64. Two of the family friends, both girls incidentally, almost never played video games outside of it, but they really loved Bomberman 64, they'd regularly be one of the people who recommend we play it.

I've never convinced my mother to play anything with me outside of Guitar Hero (the first one, when it was brand new; I thought the idea was awesome and immediately went out and bought it myself). I think the surprise of seeing me buy an expensive random thing out of nowhere caught her attention. She eventually was able to beat I Love Rock and Roll on easy. She played it herself a little after that, but hasn't played anything else with me since.

About the same with my dad. He never played a game with me for more than a few minutes. He did regularly ask me what I was playing though, and seemed to be genuinely interested in listening to my ranting about them.

I used to play COD4, MW2, and Blops with my parents, which was actually very enjoyable, though I've seen fit to sell all of those recently.

Resistance FoM was also incredibly fun co-op with the parents, succeeded by Resistance 3.

I've gotten a few of my non-gamer friends to play Rock Band a few times, also.

There are lots of great point and click adventure games out there, like the classic LucasArts games. Grimm Fandango (if you can get it to work on your computer) is absolutely amazing and on my top 10 game list. You might also want to look at Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery. I haven't played Deponia, but it looks good.

Personally, I've actually played through some of Mass Effect with my dad, simply because he's a big Sci-Fi buff.

In my attempts to get my girlfriend into gaming, she managed to get through several games:

I got her hooked on Plants Vs Zombies (she has been playing it for longer than I have). And Bookworm Adventures.

She played through some adventure games (we thought of the solutions together): Kyrandia Series, Monkey Island 1, 2 and 3 and The Longest Journey.

We played two PvP games: Worms Armageddon and Tekken 3.

And two Co-Op games: House of the Dead 1 & 2.

We are currently in the middle of a playthrough of Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. It's the most challenging game for her yet.

The experience of trying to get her into gaming made me appreciate the full gamepad support that modern games offer. Trying to get a non-pc-gamer to play with a mouse and keyboard is very difficult.

I'll tell you what worked for me when I was new to a console, and it's advice I give everyone who would love to try a console game but can't figure out how to move in 3-d space-- give her an old xbox and a copy of Knights of the Old Republic. Non-gamers who can stand SF at all like the intensive storyline and dialogue choices, and best of all, the action stops to let you choose what to do. The character sheet might take some explaining if she's never played a tabletop RPG, though.

Tell her to watch the opening cinematic and keep the sound on as she's introduced into the environment, and then *turn the sound off*. Move around. Keep moving around. Walk around the room until she gets the hang of walking around and controlling the thumbsticks. If she keeps the sound on, the prodding from Trask is going to frustrate her, but on mute it's the perfect game for learning to move without having to worry about dieing or combat of any kind. When she thinks she understands movement, then turn the sound back on and investigate the locker with the equipment and slowly start back into the rest of the game. Most importantly, after a short tutorial from you, let her do this WITHOUT YOU, if at all possible. It's frustrating to newbies to know they're holding their experienced friend/family member back, and the more frustrated they get, the more they dislike the game.

Once she feels some confidence in moving around and handling the controller, then let her come to you with questions on how to progress her character and how to handle other aspects of the game. If she likes the game and gets better at using the controller, then you can explore some more co-op games.

Portal 2 - she liked the concept, although was completely unable to learn how to use a controller or how to orientate in a 3D environment. Decided she had enough after about 40 minutes of mistakenly running back into the room she just left.
If it would make her feel any better, I...err... still do that sometimes. Navigation is still what trips me up in games, why I play through most games on easy first, and up the difficulty once I figure out where the hell I'm going.

That's another reason I recommend the hell out of KOTOR and KOTOR II to newbies, they have easy interfaces and good maps!

I play Rock Band 2 with my sister a lot. She's actually pretty good at it now. I even got her to try Portal and she enjoys it quite a bit. She's not too coordinated with controlling both analog sticks at the same time but she's getting better.

Back when the N64 was riding high, I got my dad to play Goldeneye and Mario Kart 64. He didn't have a terrible time, but I think he sees the whole gaming thing as kinda dumb.

Well my sister normally isn't into games, but I got her to play the Mass Effect trilogy, which she loved, but now she seems to have an obsession with Garrus and won't shut up about him.

I played Wii sports with my mom once. She smacked me in the back of my head with the Wii-mote and since then I haven't had the urge to play with her...

She has played a little of Professor Layton though.

This is pretty oldschool, but my mother used to play digger and dig dug with us back in the 80's. It was hilarious to play with her and have her screaming "They're after me!" It was a blast.

More recently, My friends wife agreed to lay ratchet and clank all 4 one and little big planet 2 with my son. Once we tried just the adults as well. It's great all the ways you can 'accidentally' kill each other in those games.
