I just delved into Dark Souls for the first time this month and it has sucked me in completely. It took a few hours to understand why people could put 500+ hours into these games and now I understand why.

Interesting post and thoughts! Guess it really depends on the genre too.
And as far as Fallout, I know it's a great game and I enjoy it immensely but you can only kill fiends and robots before you lose the over-arching narrative.

Dragon Age. I'm an absolute fiend for any Dragon Age game. I will sit for hours upon hours on them. FF14 - I can heal for days and never get bored.

Final Fantasy XIV, so many untold hours, although being a subscription MMO, its sort of designed to be that way.
Mother of god... an XIV player. HI FRIEND! What server are you on? What class do you play? I'm far too excited to talk to someone else who plays.

I've discovered that for me it's a combination of nostalgia & liking the soundtrack that makes a game stick to me.

*American McGee's Alice.
*Serious Sam 2.
*1503 AD (Anno 1503).
*Baldur's Gate 2.
*Neverwinter Nights (mostly for the premium mods).
*Anything Elder Scrolls. (For some reason Oblivion & Skyrim always make me want to revisit Morrowind locations again).
*Dungeon Siege (played this more than any other game).
*Goldeneye 64.
*Sonic 1-3 & Knuckles.
*Duck Hunt.
*Heroes of Might & Magic 4.
*Pokemon Shuffle & Pokemon Rumble World.
*RIFT.
*LotRO.
*Diablo 1.
*Fairway Solitaire. (Original Gray Aliens Games version).
*Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Windwaker.

Operation Flashpoint: Resistance (Updated recently after the parent company split, to: Arma Cold War Crisis)

Minecraft (Creatively speaking, a never ending game.)

Doom 1& 2 (Running on the Zdoom upgrade, and the Brutal Doom Mod.)

Homeworld 1 & 2 (The originals, none of that remastered crap that gutted the underlying mechanics.)

I totally know the feeling of just suddenly being bored with a game. I think it's something that happens when you hit the point where you just know exactly what the rest of the game will be like. You simply have a sense that you've seen all the mechanics there are to the game, and simply doing more of the same isn't going to make a huge difference in how well you like it. All of the games you mentioned have sort of that flaw that they just don't have any systems where suddenly everything is different. You get a fundamental handle on all the relevant mechanics very early in the game and everything past that is just a laundry list of tasks you solve in pretty much the same way.

The irony is that games often end up being so bland because they were designed to be eternally interesting. Games that you're supposed to be able to put hundreds of hours into tend to avoid introducing new mechanics late in the game because if they have two hundred hours worth of side quests they don't want to hold anything back just in case you don't do the main storyline right away.

One game series I always really enjoyed was the Gothic and Risen games, and the biggest reason for that is because playing a mage in them is so much fun (especially Gothic 2). The spellcasting mechanics themselves are nothing special, what makes it interesting is that you tend to play through easily a third of the game without any notable spells before you are finally accepted as a mage and given the proper training. Since you need to get through a lot of harrowing adventures without the aid of magic you need to learn some regular fighting techniques first. You'll find yourself trying to strike a balance between preparing to be a mage and keeping your skills sharp enough to actually get there. When you finally become a mage in the second act of the game the majority of your skill points are still in martial talents, and you're starting to play catch up on the magic, getting it leveled. So in this act you're constantly relying on both skills, playing as a sort of battle mage who slowly gains power in the magical arts. By the time you hit the third act your magic talents have fully matured, and you're now a full on wizened spellslinger who can destroy any foe without resorting to vulgar forms of physical violence. That transformation your character undergoes is just really cool and keeps the game feeling fresh. The earlier titles also managed to end when you still wanted more, which is where I think a game should end. Some of the latter ones tried to add so much extra content that by the end you can also get bored just running around with a maxed out character checking off side quests.

Hmm, Fallout 1, 2 and NV are all ones I can keep going back to.
Disgaea games can be fun to return to.
Love Mount and Blade Warband to death.
Company of Heroes is one of my jams, love WW2 stuff and some of the mods are marvelous (even if Eastern Front crashes 9/10 games)

This one will be kind of controversial:

The Witch and the Hundred Knight. I've platinumed that game and have done everything in it. But I just love it. It's so colourful, the mechanics are simple yet have depth and I loved the characters and story. Shame the bugs never got fixed. I'll probably even get the PS4 revival.

There's no game that I never get bored of but the closest is Smash Brothers, I still play it all the time but sometimes I need a break because I get tired of it.

Moogle server, me and a few other Escapees play quite lot these days, finally tackling Final Coil now that we are finally getting a static together. I generally main Healer (I can play bother SCH and WHM very effectively) and can play the other classes fine too.
Oh nice :) Same, I main a healer myself. Though if I have to go dps, I play a BARD. I used to be part of a static but sadly we broke up due to big issues with the DPS :( it was a shame, I was having a lot of fun with it. Now I'm trying to recruit for the static but I'm not getting enough interest, plus I'm looking for people who have beaten T5 and have skill with their class (hate how snobbish that sounds).

There's a few I can constantly go back to without ever feeling like I need to stop:

Any of the Total War games
Silent Hunter 3 & 4
Vietcong
Minecraft is another one, as long as I can find a project. If I don't have one, I'll forget I even have the game.

The Borderlands series.

First one clocks at 200/300 hours, BL2 1000+ and lost the count in TPS (roughly 150~200 atleast).
And in all 3 games I'm still working on characters/finding gear/finishing quests.

Crusader Kings 2, and to a lesser extent EU4. I've recently finished up an achievement run to unite India (took 200 years) and now I'm moving on to the other achievments you can get as a Hindu ruler. I've never found a game with such replay value as Crusader Kings- there are tens of thousands of possible starts, each wildly different.
More recently I've been a playing a hell of a lot of the Binding of Isaac: Rebirth on my PSV. Hopefully I'll be able to unlock most of the content before Afterbirth comes out (currently trying to beat Satan enough times to unlock The Chest). It's about the only Roguelike that's ever grabbed me so much.

I suppose that could be Lumines for me, god I loved that puzzle game!

It can be challanging but the soundtrack is smoothing enough to keep me going!

I always find myself going back to Zelda and Pokemon. I can replay each entry in the series once a year without getting tired of the games. Right now I'm replaying Pokemon FireRed. Pokemon games are so replayable because you can play with very different teams which changes how you go through the game. Plus, it's fun to go capture a bunch of Pokemon for Dex completion, or grind for more money, play at the battle facilities for good items etc.

I've played Fire Emblem Awakening for about a month straight, TWICE! The first time I played it last year, and my recent second playthrough a few months ago. I still have a bunch of stuff to do in my second file to fully complete it, so I can go back and play it anytime.
