Good thread, I haven't heard of manyof these and I've only played two: Planescape and Postal. The first one of the greatest RPGs ever written, and the second, well I have two words, "cat silencer".

My vote for best, most obscure game is ... Syndicate Wars.

Or more accurately called Cyber-mercenary-mind-control-gang-wars.

Why would I hurt you? That was the LAST good Sonic game.

I don't think that many people knows about the .Hack series. Oh and Chaos Legion. I enjoyed that game.

Planescape: Torment. I frequently mention it when I talk about how games are such a powerful storytelling medium and are capable of giving people introspective moments just like films, and sometimes even stronger. The internet has a undercurrent of love for the game just because of how many gamers were brought in during the Infinity Engine days, but I've never met another person in real life that has ever even heard of it.
People know of it, in my case, but their reaction's often one of disgust. "Yeah, but it's almost like a book, that's stupid. And you hardly ever get to use swords like in other RPGs." Often called pretentious, too.

As for my submissions, Arcanum, Terranigma, Treasure of the Rudras, Iji. The first and last are very slightly less obscure, but as a rule of thumb, no one knows about these gems.

Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 were fantastic and some of my first games. So no, you're not alone.

Damnit I wish they could make a sequel so people I talk about it with can know the joy.
Give it a decade or so, Blizzard bought the company that made it.

Sad as this is, I could probably mention any older non-PC game and most of the people I hang out with would draw a blank.

I'm not really in to any obscure games, just mainstream games that seem to have been forgotten or ignored by my friends who play games. Some of them just play anything with a flashy cover and get new games all the time so they ignore anything that isn't safe. I love psychonauts but everyone else doesn't care for it, and when I mention Half Life 2 they're like hurr we're just going to ignore it because it came out ages ago hurrr. I've never had more fun while being so immersed in a game's story EVER, yet they don't want to just give it a chance since it's not the same as others.

Trapt. The whole "Tecmo's Deception" series is fairly obscure, but Trapt was the was the only ps2 release of the series. The rest were ps1. It had several flaws, but it is satisfying (especially to those of us who wanted to see the coyote mangle the roadrunner at least once.)

I heard they don't take kindly to them 3D Sonic games around these parts...

I personally loved .hack Infection and Mutation. They got old rather quickly, though. If anything, they're a sign that story and repetitive RPG elements cannot alone support a 4-game series.

I LOVED the .Hack story, even though I only have mutation and outbreak.

Unreal Tournament 3, I dont know why it didnt take off on consoles. It had a good artstyle, lots of characters and stages to choose from, fun game modes, unique weapons, and fun vehicle combat.

crimson sky, was a game that mixed swordplay and long ranged weaponry really well with a strange leveling system if I recall. it was overlooked at the time.

Does anyone recall the following PS1 games?

Brave Fencer Musashi
Grandia
Wild ARMs 1 + 2
Legend of Mana
SaGa Frontier 1 + 2

Because I love each and every one of those games.
Brave Fencer Musashi and Wild Arms are the ones I have played, and they are awesome.
But who hasn't heard of Legend of Mana? Its amazing! Is it really that under the radar?

OT: NBA Jam. No one knows of it, but it is one of the most enjoyable sports games ever.
BOOMSHAKALAKALAKA!

Also, I highly recommend you check out the other games. Especially Grandia. One of the greatest combat engines in JRPG history. Possibly THE greatest.

And Legend of Mana is my second favorite game of all time. And is 100% unlikely to change. Except to climb to #1, possibly.
I've heard a little bit about Grandia, and I might check it out based on that recommendation.
And yes, Legend of Mana is easily in my top 5 RPGs. So good.
Grandia is probably my favorite jrpg of all time. You dont see too many lighthearted jrpgs. Didnt quite like the 2nd one as much though...
Also probably my favourite; not because it starts out light hearted, but because of how much darker the story becomes later on. It's the only game that ever made me cry; simply because something very sad happens in a game that, up until that point, had been filled with boundless optimism and joy.

Incidentally, that's a good piece of advice for game writers: if you want to make your audience cry, make your tearjerkers happen when all is sunshine and roses; the sudden shift in emotions is far more effective than bad things happening in an already grim environment.

Hey now. That's not true. Jack loves MDK.

Also, 'sup .hack people? I'm a part of that illustrious group.

OT: Project Overkill. Go on. Find me someone who actually plays this game. I do, but does anyone else?
