The subject says it all. Don't be afraid to share your honest opinion.

My personal 2 are Red Dead Redemption and Fallout 3. Like I said, I enjoy these games, and I respect them for what they are, but I just don't see what the big deal is (Specifically RDR). Sure it was fun at points, and it brought games one step closer to being respected as art (and the writing wasn't half-bad, either), but I never really got into it (Yes, I beat the game 100%, before you ask). I liked Fallout 3, but just didn't fall in love with it like I fell in love with Oblivion. I just didn't really get into it.

Thoughts, fellow Escapists? (Seriously people, no flame wars).

EDIT: Oh yeah, and GTA IV. Forgot that one XD.

Everything, in a way, is overrated. Everything has completely rabid fans who praise the game/movie/whatever into the sky and ignore it's problems. Yes, even The Beatles.

Halo, Final Fantasy VII, every game made by Valve. I would like to politely ask people not to flame me for that last one.

Minecraft.

A Brilliant game that deserves most of the praise it gets, but the Minecultists treat it like the second son of God.

As much as I liked Psychonauts, it is probably a little overrated. It was not the second coming of Jesus in video game form, it was just really good and unique. Portal falls under this too, but I did not like it as much as Psychonauts.

Portal

Great game, very unique... But so many fanboys/girls that I just get annoyed.

Pretty much all of them, between marketing and hardcore fans it's hard for a game to not be overrated.

GTA IV.

Was bored silly by the first six hours, but the campaign ended strongly and the two DLCs were both excellent.

But I don't think it's anywhere near the mammoth achievement critics and a lot of gamers hold it out to be. Cover system that often didn't work right, auto-aim system that made combat far too easy, crappy vehicle controls, that fucking friendship system, and all those completely pointless, boring missions in the first six hours (do we really need a mission where we learn to throw a brick or learn how to fist fight... neither are ever required to be used later in the game) are all are pretty major marks against it.

Mass Effect 2. I like the game, but it didn't deserve any of the RPG of the Year awards that sites threw at it. I thought it was a TPS with the option to be Good/Neutral/Bad. This is, of course, my opinion. To each their own.

Arcanum is barely recognized, and one of my favourite games ever. I still believe it's overrated - by me, among others. And I will still rabidly recommend it to anyone ever.

Basically, it's insanely buggy. Okay, an official patch fixes some of these, and an unofficial patch fixes a few more, but there are still a decent number. And the balance? Yeah, still completely laughable all around. Like the fairly cheap spell you can get within 6 levels with some determination (cheap once you pick a few things up, mind) that instakills unless the enemy makes a save, just deals more damage than any enemy has HP if they do make the save, and even works on the final boss.

Or the glorious brokenness that is the pyro axe. Or all the things that are neat but far too weak to use (looking at you, magnet-hat and half the fancier firearms).

So yeah, amazing game. One of the best ever, but I think I may be giving it too much credit. It's good, but quite possibly not good as a game.

Assassin's Creed. I love the series and have a lot of fun with it, but the story is SHIT and most fanboys I meet refuse to acknowledge that.

Also, MGS (All of em) I love Snake and everything, but I never thought that MGS was the pinnacle of story-telling either. Gameplay was tolerable in the 3rd game...but even then I was never absolutely WOWed by anything. Not to say that I didn't enjoy or love the game...

Psychonauts. It's an amazing game, but it just irritates me when people tout it as the greatest thing ever yet hate on Brutal Legend. IMO they're both pretty much equally good, but in different ways - Psychonauts is hilarious and thoughtful, whereas Brutal is hilarious and adrenaline-pumping. The fact that most people didn't play the multiplayer of Brutal which was pretty much the best part doesn't really help either.

Mass Effect 2 - yes it was fun but it wasn't as amazing as everyone claims, It's a bit like Apple promising to change everything but actually doing little
Any CoD game since Modern Warfare - Yes modern warfare's campaign was realistic and gritty and clever but seriously it's been the same game now for 3 iterations, stop harping on the same old plot lines and for goodness sakes leave Vietnam alone. America were the bad guys.

I would have to say i agree with you about fallout I was not as sucked into the game itself as I was in oblivion and I think drum roll please halo3 is overrated because it was the same as halo one which was an awsome game and halo2 not as awsome single player but it was fun on live however halo 3 was so boring single and multiplayer after the hyp I was disapointed

For me the most overrated game that I like is Final Fantasy 7, it is a good game, don't get me wrong, but it's not as good as some people make it out to be.
I think the reason why it's so overrated is because it was the game that put the Final Fantasy series firmly on the map.

Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare. yes, it was a good game. yes, the online was fun. it wasn't the best game ever and everthing that followed is not the total shite the fanboys claim it is

every Call of Duty after 4. yes, it's fun. but like the first, it's not exactly re-inventing the genre (unless keeping grayish-brown FPSes alive is innovation, I alway thought it was a mortal sin)

Oblivion. I don't really care for console rpgs in general (only a few), but this just got boring. you get to the huge ass overworld and it's about as fun as wandering through the forest is in real life. yes it's big, but it's BORING. I think I saw like 3 or 4 people and maybe 2 animals in a half hour of traversing the forest. I shook down a guard for his horse. that was the most interesting thing to happen in my exceedingly long trip to my objective. however, for all my griping, I'm willing to admit that it IS quite impressive as far as detail goes, but it just isn't for me

Ocarina of Time.

Don't get me wrong, I still think it's amazing, but It's far from the 'greatest game of all time' (Hell, it's not even my favourite Zelda game, 3D or otherwise).

I thought Portal was pretty damn good, but I could very well do without the brain-dead fanbase who constantly quote it for no reason.
