Simple enough basically what games do you like that are in a genre you usually dont care for. I tend to try out more games than I used to but really there have always been specific genres and sub genres that have usually left me cold but once in a while a game comes along that I thoroughly enjoy even if it dosent change my mind on the genre in question. Heres a few that I remember :-

FFVII- get the big one out of the way first, before this game I hated RPGS as in all rpgs I had tried JRPGS and CRPGS before and couldnt stand them so I was surprised that I liked this game in fact it stands today as the only game to ever make me change my mind on an entire genre and get me to re-evaluate all RPG games regardless of their origins.

Outrun - yeah cant stand racing games I have zero interest in cars and hate the rubber banding A.I usually seen in games of this genre but with Outrun there was something different I admit a lot is probably nostalgia as my old man likes cars and when I was little he would take me to the arcade sometimes where I would play this game on him even though I could hardly see the damn screen sometimes, but yeah I still like the game to this day.

Crash Team Racing - yeah ok a subgenre of racing again I generally dislike karting games but my god this game is frikkin fantastic and one I still play to this day I dont care for Marios efforts except for double dash to some extent but this game just did it for me.

Advance wars and Valkyria Chronicles - I have lumped these two together as turn based strategy games a genre I usually despise probably because I got burnt out ages ago on it by playing chess to much but these games were so good I couldnt stop playing especially Valkyria Chronicles which is probably my second favourite game of all time now.

The Longest Journey - ah the old point and click adventure games yeah they arent for me or werent until I tried this game and realised what I had been missing something about the game just hooked me in probably the lore, characters and story while the puzzles actually made sense (usually). I have since gone back and tried a few more most are as crap as I remember but I liked Syberia and Monkey island 1 +2.

Punch Out - going to class this as a sports game its just not a realistic one yeah sports games are probably my least favourite games of all mainly because like cars I have zero interest in sports as in any sports although I can ofc appreciate some of them but to my mind this is the only sports game I have actually enjoyed probably because it is so simplistic and characterized, well unless you count Tiny Toon wacky sports on the SNES that was also awesome. I recently bought the wii update and that was also as fun and infuriating as the original (which I also have and still play on occasion).

Disgaea - yup turn based RPG strategy games probably obvious I dont care for them seeing as how I traditionally disliked RPGS and still generally dislike TBS games (or RTS for that matter) but there is something about this series that draws me in I love the character art and the humour while the amount of possible gameplay is truly incredible. I suppose I could also include Shining force resurrection of the dark dragon here as well. Still dont like the (sub) genre but these games were great fun.

Katawa Shoujo - Visual novels is it a game? who cares fully expected to hate the game and ended up pleasantly surprised I have tried other VN since but havent managed to finish them I am sure there are some good ones out there but I cant be bothered to dig through the dross.

So anyone else had any experiences in games that have subverted their expectations and ended up being fun despite being from genres you generally dont care for?

Wrpgs: dragon age origins and Oblivion . I can stand all that tolkien stuff , but Dragon age Origins won me with the tactical combat and great story . Oblivion on the otherhand was my first shot at a TES game and i loved the Sandbox rpg things . That game was so deep and fun . I bought Skyrim and while it wasn't a bad game it felt different and yet more of the same . Maybe i was so amazed at Oblivion because it was my first , skyrim just didn't do much for me .

Racing games: Mario kart DS/WII. Seriously who doesn't like mariokart? Especially online?

Hack and slash : Bayonetta and GOW (1-3)series . I find hack and slash to be so boring and repetitive . But god of war brings enough to the table to keep me entertained. While bayonetta just blows my mind with how fun and different that is . Truely a spectacle fighter ( as yahtzee calls it) . The spectacle is AMAZING , the visuals , the combat, the replay value .

Burnout!

I don't think I've ever wanted to touch any other racing game. All the fun of smashin' shit up at high speeds for points. YEAAAAH!

There are plenty of racing games without rubber banding. They're usually more realistic games though, so I'm guessing they probably won't do much for you either. But either way, I'm a big fan of racing games, and I really dislike rubber banding myself. Outrun is a great game too.

OT:

Infinite Undiscovery - I don't love this game. It's by no means brilliant, but I found it much more entertaining than the vast majority of JRPGs because of the battle system. Again, it wasn't anything revolutionary, but one of the things I dislike most about the genre is how detached and artificial combat feels. It's not just the fact that it's usually turn based, but often the rules they run by and the way you control characters feels so contrived and tedious to me. I so much prefer being able to move a character exactly where I want, when I want, and being able to attack how I want immediately after pressing the button. To have that direct and intimate control over the character who feels capable and responsive. Not just selecting an option from a menu. Infinite Undiscovery managed to do that within the sprawling setting of a JRPG.

Ninety Nine Nights - Again, this isn't really a game I'm that crazy about. In fact, I haven't actually owned the game in years. But I did rather enjoy a lot of the time I spent with the game. Usually games in the genre are pretty repetitive and shallow, with clunky controls and ugly graphics. N3 might be guilty of several of those flaws too, but something about it clicked with me. For one thing, the game was full of quite a lot of combos which I found involving to learn and pull off. I also liked the aesthetic of the game, and the music was pretty good. The story was kind of crappy and cheesy, but something about the world it was set in interested me. But then I got to a certain point early on in one of the unlockable campaigns, and just got impossibly stuck. It totally killed my investment in the game. I just stopped playing it and got rid of it after a while. I still have some nostalgia for it though. I have played the demo of the sequel, and it felt pretty awful to me. It was really disappointing.

I never liked fighting games as a rule, then I got UMVC3 on launch solely because they added Phoenix Wright as a playable character and I fucking love it. It even sparked my interest in other fighting games like BlazBlue.

I wouldn't say I disliked JRPGs before, but I absolutely LOVE Persona 4. It is my favourite game EVER!

If you're thinking of going into Visual Novels, I would recommend the Ace Attorney games. They are freaking AWESOME!

I really don't like fighters/beat-'em-ups, but I can play Brawl all day long. I love the fact that there are basically 8 moves for every character and that's it. No complex combos, no list of 500 slightly different moves to learn, just direction-and-a and direction-and-b. Also, every fighter game has such terrible character movement, its just so low and awkward, and Brawl characters move so much more free and fluidly.

Can't think of anything else at the moment.

I'm not a fan of the generic "futuristic" military shooter franchise that is released annually or their competitors that do the same thing, but slightly different.

I have, however, found plenty of titles within the shooter genre that are spectacular and put other shooters to shame.

The Bioshock series combines RPG elements in a FPS, incorporating creative and tactful combat, interesting characters, dynamic storytelling, and large atmospheric environments.

Vanquish is a fun TPS that incorporates both bullet time and fast-paced movement throughout the battlefield.

The Resistance series provides many unique weapons with alternate weapons/ammo/capabilities, a simple, yet progressive story, strategic item/weapon placement and challenging combat that rewards tact and patience.

Dead Space 2 is a terrifying survivor horror/TPS with dimly lit environments, enemies that appear from seemingly everywhere that can kill you instantly if you are in the red, useful upgrades and powers, and a new game+ feature that allows you enjoy the experience a second time around.

I dislike JRPGs, Social Sims and most Dungeon Crawlers, and yet Persona 3+4 are some of my favorite games of all time. Strange how that works.

I like playing that game but I am incapable of getting passed the... third/fourth level? (The one where Inphy gets stuck in a forest place... I always die at the boss fight :C it's pretty tragic since I want to unlock the other characters because OMG Inphy is a massive cu-

OT: I like Resonance of Fate (sort of) but I really dislike JRPGs hahaha...

StarCraft: I mainly dislike dislike RTS because I suck at it, but I don't like it all that much by default anyway, but I absolutely love all the SC games, and to this day remain adamant in my opinion as to they improve with each installment.

Minecraft.
I thought I would hate it because it's one of those do-nothing-'em-ups
But it got me hooked and I can't stop playing.

Most FPS make me want to pull out my own teeth for want of something more interesting to do, but my brother got Bioshock: Infinite and I blazed through that game in two days, so much fun. (I think it's the crank gun which does it)

Also liked playing Borderlands, but I only used the siren's close range attacks or sometimes a pistol for pesky snipers.

Generally dislike flying shooters. Loved Lylat Wars/ Star Fox. That's about the only example I can think of... I have pretty eclectic taste when it comes to genres, there aren't many I don't like.

Dreamfall, the sequel to The Longest Journey.

I am generally open to a lot of genres but adventures were never amongst them. Gave this one a try and loved it. I am definitely going to look into TLJ as well. And not long ago I bought also Sanitarium, decided to give the adventure genre one more try, so we´ll see... :)

I think I remember that level, and I remember it being a real ***** to get past. Can't remember how I did it. I remember on several occasions I went back and played older levels to do some grinding to improve skills. Maybe that's how I got past it. Or maybe it was just fluke or something. It was so long ago, I can't remember.

Inphyy was kind of a *****, but she was one of the best to control. She had some really cool and devastating moves. She had among the best visual design too. In her and her brother's campaign, she wasn't such a huge ***** though. She was still bad, but not terribly so. That's something I liked about the game. How the same events in different versions of the story happened slightly differently since it was from the point of view of another character. Like in Dwingvatt's campaign, she is a completely irredeemable and evil monster, despite events actually hardly changing at all.
