I'm with the OP, by all rights I should love Baldur's Gate but I... just... can't... do it.

Witcher 2. The story was great, the characters were alright, the art design was pretty weird but not too absurd, the combat wasn't that bad (on easy mode, when you could just hack away with your sword) and the pacing was alright.

But I just feel as if something is missing, some may be due to my computer crashing everytime I try to load it up on resolution above 860 x 64 were the game looks like complete crap (no, it seriously does, and my computer has no troubles with Skyrim, Mass Effect 3 or even Arkham city), but I still feel that something is missing.
This used to be my "Why cant I love this game AAARGH" -experience. I had problems with crashing also, so maybe that was the reason I could not get into Witcher 2 and for a time I was really confused since it seemed it was improved version of witcher 1 (game I liked) in every aspect.

Then that extended cut -patch/add-on came and fixed the issue with crashing and I played the game to end and now remember it as one of the more fonder gaming experiences, so I am just gonna pin my not liking it squarely on the technical problems.

OT: Witcher 2 used to be this to me but not anymore. Cant remember other similar experiences, they might be suppressed.

Dead Rising
[x]Zombies
[x]"Open world" (May not be New York, but you aren't strung up in one place the whole time)
[x] Fun ways to kill the undead

The only thing that REALLY killed it was the forced time limit and the really bad AI. I tried the second one, but again, the time limit killed it for me. I don't like having to decide which missions to do, and when I got to the point where I wasn't trying to do every one(I would usually try them all, and do the ones nearby and any ones that weren't too hard), I got stuck having to spend time wandering around killing zombies and whatnot because I didn't have anything to do to pass the time before the next story arc happened.

Batman: Arkham City
[x]Batman
[x]Open World
[x]Metroid style open world
[x]Batman
[x]More villains
[x]Batman

I don't know what it is about Arkham City that I don't like, but I feel that this type of game is better in the size that Arkham Asylum was. City jusy feels too big, almost like it just wanted to one-up everything Asylum did.

Borderlands (I'll skip the checklists from not on)
Open world, FPS, over the top guns, etc. The premise was rather unique but I think they really pulled it off horribly. The story could have used some fixing, and the pacing definitely needed fixed. Too much running/driving around a bland desert wasteland, shooting/running over the same bandits/bugs. And of course the whole armored super soldiers coming in towards the end. mix that with the randomly generated loot system and all the problems with those. (I'm a sniper, I don't want your shitty SMG, I want a long range gun, with a scope, with high firepower), and the fact that the Sniper was EXTREMELY overpowered, and the other 3 didn't seem very interesting to play. The Siren may have been, never played her, but Brick and Roland just weren't my cup of tea.

Vanquish
Fast paced, shooty shooty explodey action? Sounds awesome. Played it til the first boss and it wasn't as awesome as I thought it would be. I can't put my finger on why I don't like it though.

Just cause 2 I should love that game but I just can't seems to enjoy it unfortunately.
Yeah I played for about an hour or so and couldn't get used to the aiming/controls/parachute thing. I love open world games and pretty much everything Yahtzee likes, but that one I can't seem to get into. I'll probably give it another shot, but it just makes me want to play Infamous 2 again.

Bayonetta

Made by the same guy who made Devil May Cry and Okami (which I was still thoroughly infatuated with at the time).

I fucking hated it though. Maybe it's that I grew up and changed from when I played DMC, but the moment the game started I was cringing at the screen.
I played Bayonetta at least 2 years before picking up DMC, gotta say I much preferred the first, pretty much played just Bayonetta for at least a month. Different strokes eh?

On topic: Dwarf Fortress.

I have quite the thing for micromanagement in games, economy, fortress-building, the whole shebang; but it's just not really intuitive enough for me to get into it, and a good half of the things that can be done just seem a bit pointless to me.

I'm with everyone else on the whole Fallout 3/ New Vegas thing. I just couldn't for the life of me get into the originals.

Dragon Age Origins is another.
Some good fantasy writing: Check
MMO-esque combat: Check
Morrigan and Alistair bickering: Check-a-roo

But after three attempts to get into it, I just couldn't, no matter what.

Far Cry 2. Everything about the trailers and gameplay demos screamed awesomeness. The super awesome graphics (which I think were the best on console at the time), the giant open world, the wildlife. I like to be able to just run around an open world and see things happening around me, like I'm in a real world where things happen regardless of whether I'm actually there to see them or not.

But this game just dragged on and on. My friend actually warned me about it, because it was the same for him (we were both so hyped up for the release date), but I rented it anyway. By the second half of the game I was just praying for it to end (and then the ending turned out to be terrible too).

Loved Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas.

Thought I'd go back the original CRPGs, expecting something amazing.

I was rather disappointed.

The games haven't aged well at all, gameplay wise, I just couldn't make myself play through such dated mechanics, no matter how good the RPG aspects may be.
How were the mechanics dated? I really enjoy New Vegas...
Oh god, it's got this terrible turn based combat and actions are based on a points system, makes combat really slow.

The interface is a friggin' nightmare too.

I can get over the dated visuals, but the game is just no fun to play.

OT: Avernum. I guess "dislike" is too strong, but I'm so very lukewarm about them.

The other big series from the developers is one of my favorites. So, the devs of one of my favorite universes and morality dramas (as well as dang good RPGs) got their start in a cool turn-by-turn RPG series which continued until very recently, set in a sort of "hell" that all the criminals of the Empire above ground are sent to, with entire civilizations rising in a huge cave? Huge open world? Epic escape-to-the-surface story with hundreds of well designed sidequests with loot? Actual difficulty? Advanced character creation? Parties of four? Sign me up!

...Uuuhhhhhh?

It took me two years to get to the halfway point in the game, and then my computer got bricked by a virus.

It took so much willpower to go through it again, but I finally finished it late last year.

It can be so incredibly tedious, but the 10% that isn't driving makes up for it.

Battlefield 3. Loved Bad Company 2 but 3 just bores me. The most reasonable explanation I can think of is the maps. This wouldn't be as much of a problem on PC with 64-player servers, but on console, they are waaaaaaay too big. I can barely play a single match without falling asleep.
Heh, most of the vanilla BF3 maps are pretty shit. It does help to be on PC but they are "dumbed down" maps, not just too big or too small. Waaaay back in BF2 (and BF2143, I didn't play much BF:BC2) maps were strategic. Vehicles were primarily tied to control points and not to spawns, or the control points commanded a choke point. Just think about how important the Airfield is to Wake Island or Gatehouse and Warehouse are to Karkand...that just doesn't apply to BF3 maps the control points hold no value other than to control ticket bleed. This is why Back to Karkand is currently the essential DLC for BF3.

EDIT: Whoops! Forgot to actually contribute. I can't for the life of me work out why I like Skyrim. I loved Arena, ,adored Daggerfall, hated Morrowind (way too small after Daggerfall) hated Oblivion (aesthetically worse than Morrowind, and dull as dishwater to boot), and here I am playing what is essentially Oblivion in the snow without the potato people. I has only the smallest of improvements over the worst entry in the series and I am enjoying it as much as I ever enjoyed Daggerfall despite the smallness of the map. So logically I should hate Skyrim, because it is even further simplified and still has a small map but I'm loving it.

Mass Effect 2 broke my heart. I loved the first one and expected them to expand on it...instead they tore the guts out of the RPG elements and sidelined the entire storyline. I was so pissed off about it that i haven't even bothered playing 3 yet.

Final fantasy 13 was another kick in the spuds. I really liked 10, and 12 was bearable enough as a hybrid bastard but 13 was just plain garbage. I'll expand my disappointment to Square in general...there is a company that went from strength to stench in very little time.

Half life 2 was a big let down compared to the first, i just didn't find it challenging like i did the first. Team fortress sucks balls compared to counter strike and portal was pretty lame for my gaming style. The orange box didnt do much for me at all but still good value for money (slap and tickle lol).

Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess,
couldn't get into it no matter how much I played.
Love every aspect about it other than the motion controls.
Just couldn't get immersed.

Star Ocean: Till the End of Time.

I love RPG's, particularly Japanese RPG's. Absolutely cannot stand Star Ocean. Every time I try play it it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth so I go and play some Dragon Quest VIII again.
I recommend the remakes of 1 and 2 on the PSP. They're absolutely stellar.

sins of solar empire, dawn of war 2.

Just really were not good strategy games in terms of either too much action and animations or far too detailed forgetting the combat and had boring space flight combat.

Crescendo.

Full opinion <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.237875-Neutral-Drow-reviews-Crescendo>here, if anyone's interested. Short opinion...I should have liked it more, based on how much I love dramatic visual novels and shoujo manga, and the promising premise of the game. In spite of that, sometimes the game felt too short to make me care (despite how I liked the characters), sometimes I felt I was drowning in angst, and the potential best story path in the game had a horrendous non-resolution. I like it more in retrospect, mainly because I've come to appreciate its soundtrack (it uses mainly early American Ragtime and Impressionist piano pieces, particularly by Scott Joplin), but otherwise...

Also, Monster Hunter Tri. I usually love MMO solo gameplay, including in single-player games. Something about Tri just made it not work for me.

Alan Wake, I've heard nothing but praise from everyone about it but it's just....boring. I find the scares cheap, the action dull, and the story is just.....meh. I was seriously disappointed in it.

Bioshock.

Its got a critically lauded story, it was incredible for its time, and apparently everyone still can't get over how good the game's ambiance was and just how monumental it was to play at the time, but every time I boot the game up, I get about as far as killing Steinman, save/harvest my first Little Sister, and then turn off the game and play something fun.

One day...

Mario Galaxy 2 springs to mind I absolutely loved the first game and the second one keeps a lot of the things I liked (and things I didnt) while offering basically more of the same but I just cant play it anymore I have tried so many times and have got quite far into it but it just puts me in a bad mood and I dont enjoy playing it.

Mario 64 is another one I just cannot get into this game even though I generally like 3D platformers.
