Games you love... but sometimes hate

Unfortunately no game is absolutely perfect. Even our favourite games must have at least a tiny little detail that irritates us, even if we can glaze over it or forget it ever came up.

Is there a game that you love, but has something you wish was different? Ever been having fun playing a game, but at the same time wondering how on Earth the developers thought that something was a good idea? How would you fix a game you love to make it absolutely perfect in your eyes? And I'm not talking about bugs and glitches here, but actual features or moments of an otherwise brilliant game, that you just can't bring yourself to enjoy.

Metal Gear Solid

The Sniper Wolf fights. The fucking gun sway on the sniper rifle without the pentazemin is indescribable. You have to use the frikking d-pad to aim, and everytime Wolf hits you your aim gets thrown off by what seems like a mile. Still one of my favourite games, but those two Boss fights make me loose my will to live.

Pretty much any fighting game. When fighting the AI, all of the solid gameplay and balance is thrown out the window. And, when fighting against another player, you just have bad days sometimes. Nothing seems to work, your execution is garbage and you couldn't read a children's book. That can be absolutely infuriating when you know you can play much better than you're playing but something is just off.

Quick time events in any game, ever. Particularly you, Tomb Raider.

I get why they exist and I can see why, on paper, they're used - but I just don't like them.

They make me panic and flail and want to throw my controller/keyboard at the other side of the room.

All of them.

Most recently, Batman: Arkham Asylum when going for a 100% save file.

I still love the stealthing, love the combat, love the locations, et al.

But good lord the "Shock and Awe (Extreme)" challenge map is nothing more than pure frustration, all because of the stupid timer they put on each round.

But I have a low level of patience and a short temper, which I tend to let loose while playing games. If I feel like a game is toying with me, I'm liable to get angry at it.

This. And since my main game is UMVC3, a good day could turn into a losing streak in a matter of minutes.

Assassin's Creed IV: Pirate stuff great. Everything else: no. Nobody cares about the frame story.

Red Dead Redemption: One of the last lasso missions was glitched and I couldn't complete it without a reset. Really annoying and awful. Literally my only complaint in the entire game.

Mass Effect 1 and 2's biggest issue was Mass Effect 3 so I'm counting that as well.

FF7's CPR game in Junon. Impossible to fail, no rewards, just arbitrary slow motion primitive quick time event. Pointless. Also Cait Sith's re-entry while Cloud is slapping Aeris. One of the most powerful moments in the game pissed on by that idiot cat machination and his wink nudge humor.

Deadly premonition. I absolutely love the game, and it counts as one of my favourite games of all time, but sometimes the controls make me want to throw my controller across the room out of sheer frustration, and I sometimes really hate the map. When I unlocked the walkie talkie in one of the side quests it made my game playing experience a hell of a lot easier.

EVERY Assassin's Creed game.

Love the story, love the gameplay, universe, everything. But the series has these... how do I put it... these little ticks. Just persistent little things that don't seem to go away in any of the games.

Like the player character (be it Altair, Desmond, Ezio, whoever) having that tendency to jump onto the wrong thing at a critical moment.

Or the occasional unresponsive counter.

Or that weird way that, in the memory storylines, every game introduces like a dozen important characters all at once early on and then expects you to remember them all later (Revelations was the only one that didn't do this, packing them all neatly into Yusuf and Sofia. But god was this a problem in Black Flag.)

None of these are severe enough to make me dislike AC. But Christ can they be annoying.

Day Z both mod and standalone, both look beautiful and can seem scary around some parts of the map but good god are the controls wonky and stiff most of the time, I've even tried remapping the keys and tuning the mouse controls and even tried a controller (which needs more keys to bind and more edits) and still the way I controlled felt wonky and stiff.

I know this has aready been "this'd", so I'll just say the same. I think this applies pretty universally in this genre, too.

Borderlands 2.

Loved 95% of my experience. But holy hell, Ultimate Vault Hunter is just plain impossible unless you play by a very strict set of rules. And the main problem is that it's simply not fun to play that way. so yeah, I stopped at level 56.

Then again, I stopped at level 56. So that's still a fantastic game.

Metal Gear Solid 2. I absolutely love the (admittedly batshit) plot, but a lot of the game, like the bomb disposal and swimming, just drags on. The dialogue can be pretty cringeworthy too. The stealth gameplay, while a perfection of the concept introduced in MGS1, isn't really given the opportunity to shine outside of the Tanker mission. Half of the Big Shell isn't even explorable. The VR missions alleviate this a bit but still, it could have been a lot more.

Ha ha OP, implying Persona 4 is not perfect. You rascal you

I suppose in the same vein as fighting games, League of Legends games sometimes going badly wrong can ruin a perfectly good mood. Same for DOTA of course but I don't play that one.

As much as I love playing AD Carry (read: Jinx) it's fuckin' frustrating to even stay alive when you can practically feel the enemy team's attack pings on your face during a fight. For some reason people know to focus the enemy carries but seem strangely ignorant to protecting their own so You have 2 or 3 people from both sides brushing past each other on their way to the back line completely ignoring one another. If I was playing Ezreal i'm fine because lol Arcane Shift OP but Jinx is the only character in recent history that they didn't give some kind of mobility dash to.

Sun shines, rain pours, EU West goes down and Riot designs nothing but mobility characters.

New Super Mario Bros. games, it's hard to call them bad games, but I dislike them for being so samey. I believe Nintendo handles it's franchises very well, but I will concede the New Super Mario Bros. games are too safe, bland, and homogenized to be considered great Nintendo games. This may not count considering I don't love these games in any way, I just won't say they are bad.

Metal Gear Solid games, great games, but man do I wish the controls and gameplay were as fun as the convoluted stories. I would replay those games more often of I enjoyed the gameplay more.

Kid Icarus Uprising, I love it, but the controls are absolutely terrible, especially if you are left handed like me. I don't know how they released that game considering it was universal that most people had trouble playing the game itself. Still great otherwise.

I feel the same way. I understand their purpose, but they can be so frustrating and I've never felt any sense of accomplishment after completing one. It just seems like a lazy design choice to me.

Assassins Creed has always had dodgy movement, when I want to hop onto that pole coming out of the water, my guy goes LAWL, DIVIN INTO WATER!It gets damn annoying, especially when being chased or chasing someone.
Also, this. I hate when this happens! It's so damn frustrating, especially when I'm being chased, tailing someone, or pressed for time. I just want to throw my controller through a window when this happens.
