The game is called Ascendancy... and a very obscure quirky space-business-trading game called Gazillionare.
I bought Ascendancy second hand a long, long time ago, and it was cool for a while until I got other space sims. Never got too into it.

Gazillionaire, on the other hand, is still being sold at the same price as when it was first released back in '96, or whenever it was made. You can download various versions of demos. It has recently been rereleased as a special, updated edition: so far as I can tell, they've changed the colour of some of the buttons, and unlocked planet specials for the demo.

Sadly, they were not worth the 10 year wait.

Wolfenstein 3D
The controls are terrible, the graphics are grainy and pixelated, the AI is non-existent, but I absolutely loved it. Great fun back in the day. Also, who didn't jump out of their seat the first time Robo-Hitler walked around the corner and killed you with his chaingun arms?

Sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy Ascendancy as much as I did, but I've always suspected it was a very idiosyncratic attraction.

Really surprised the Gazillionaire is still out there. I still have my old CDROM, so I guess there's no need to pick up the "special premium edition". Not a bad game, if very simple. It was one of the great games to play in "hot seat" mode, along with old Civilization. In the days where me and my friend tying up the phone lines with our modems all day was not an option.

Here's another quick nostalgia item. Dark Reign, and it's sequel. They were not great or innovative RTS games in the least, but I had a hell of a lot of fun with them and enjoyed the dark future story (as if it were uncommon in gaming as a whole). I still remember many a gradeschool afternoon spent turtling behind walls of Tachyon Cannons and engaging in an endless Rift Generator superweapon war with my childhood best friend.

Kirby Super Star

Good memories of my sister and I teaming up to take down Marx, which we thought was the hardest video game boss EVER. Now he seems like child's play, but the game is still awesome.

Mine would have to be the original Crash Bandicoot series on the ol' PlayStation. Getting Crash 2 when I was seven years old filled me with glee, and I still like that and other games in the series today. That included the spin-offs too, like Crash Team Racing and Crash Bash.
All this plus Freespace. Freespace was my first hardcore game before I even would have called myself a gamer. Pity some sort of glitch got me stuck on a level no matter what...

I won't include games that were widely popular such as Tie Fighter or Starcraft, but I'll list a few that I love even though I know they aren't that popular:

Wrestlemania 2000
Star Trek: 25th Anniversary Game
Star Trek Starship Creator
Army Men
Noctropolis

Super Mario Bros. 3 - but I think that one never really went away, did it? It's so loved.

I just re-played FFX. I know it isn't technically that old, but for me it's a very sentimental game.

OMG, Wolfenstein!

You just made me flash back to Cmdr. Keen and Jill of the Jungle. Thanks! (And I mean that completely un-sarcastically!)

If I could, I'd replay Civilization (the first one), because it came out around that time, too, and it was my first strat game. <3 strats. That would be like going back to the womb - for about three minutes.

Then, much like going back to the womb, I would probably just find myself very, very bored.

I'd totes play Worms: Armageddon again if I still had it.

Some already mentioned (thanks for reminding me), but here are my nostalgic games:
Red Baron II
Star Control 2 (btw starcon3 compared to starcon2 is HORRIBLE, you can get Starcon2 for free currently)
Duke Nukem 3D
The Secret of Monkey Island
Civilization
Wolfenstein 3D
Cmdr. Keen!!!! thanks whoever brought that one up
Baldur's Gate (literally started replaying it yesterday)
Wing Commander (series in general, played most of them)
Master of Orion 2 (just replayed it a few weeks ago... game is harder than i remembered on hard mode)
One Must Fall (robotic fighting game anyone)
Command And Conquers
and lastly, one of my most nostalgic ever: Lands of Lore: Throne of Chaos

Anybody else besides me ever play Blake Stone?
Hell yes. That game had it all over Wolfenstein 3D back in the day. Better attempt at a story, better weapons and monsters, and it just felt a lot more exciting to play. I'd class it somewhere between Wolf3D and Doom in terms of quality, but it was definitely my favourite to play.

I don't even know how I palyed the full version. I had a demo of it on a disc somewhere, like the first episode or something. Then I guess I must have gotten the full version off a friend back in the days when software piracy was as simple as having a working knowledge of arj command lines in MS-DOS and a stack of freshly formatted floppy discs.

Come to think of it, that's how I played Space Quests 1-3 as well.

One Must Fall
One Must Fall 2097? Or was there actually a predecessor to that? I've never found out for sure. OMF2097 was great. The story was pretty compelling, for a fighting game, and you just don't see enough fighting games where you can customise your own fighter.
I've recently rediscovered the joys of retro games on a DOS emulator, I wonder if I can find it somewhere and get it to run properly...

There wasn't a predecessor, but there is a 3D sequel called One Must Fall: Battlegrounds. Haven't played it though.

My nostalgia list is as follows
Shadow Over Mystara
Exile 3: Ruined World
Iron Blood
Mega Man X
Shinobi
Gangster Town
Cloud Master
Choplifter
The Ninja
Air Zonk
Yo' Bro
Keith Courage in Alpha Zones

Final Fantasy VII, Super Mario World, Sim City 2000, Civilization, Crash Bandicoot: Warped, Donkey Kong Country, WarCraft II, StarCraft, Ocarina of Time, Blast Corps, Pilot Wings 64. Actually, a lot of the early games on the 64: Wave Race 64, Goldeneye, Star Fox 64, Super Mario 64, even Jet Force Gemini.

I miss the 90's.

Most people here would probably be too young to remember this, but...

Head over Heels.

The most awesome puzzle solving game ever to come out of the 1980s. And it involved a doughnut gun. When I found out someone had remade it for the PC screen for screen I was so happy.

Also, any of the original 2D Worms games.

There's a pc remake of Head Over Heels? Sweet.

I remember buying that for £1.99 for my C64. Top game.

I'm gonna have to track that down.

I completely forgot about IK+. The King of the early 2d beat-em-ups, although it was the Amiga version that really stuck with me.
