Games you love, that everyone else seems to hate

Are there any games which you think are great, but for whatever reason, everyone else thinks completely suck?

For me, it's Brutal Legend. Seriously, it's not a bad game. I think it's the fault of reviews for telling people that the stage battles are "really bad RTS sections" making people approach them as something to endure, not enjoy, and not even trying to understand the fairly complex mechanics involved, instead just passing them of as bad.

Anyone else got any example of this? Great games everyone else either hates or has never heard of?

About two weeks ago I would have said Halo Reach, however age has brought wisdom. I can easily understand why people seem to dislike it, and I even understnad why some hate it. I myself am slowly detaching myself from it. I do still enjoy playing it, admittiably the online multiplayer portion, but it no longer holds my loyalty, as few games do these days.

Fable 3 has seen a few major improvements, the story being one of them. Still, I don't feel to much attachment to it as far as loyalty.

If I had to select a game that will truly have my love forever, I would probably pick Shadow of the Colossus. It was the very first game I ever bought with my own money, and it forged a passion for great game design within me, which has taken years to reach the front of my mind. I was a fanboy and hated forum troll, but I have since grown up. Thank the Lord for that... to imagine what you could have become, eh?

On the topic of Halo Reach, personally, I think it's good, but there's so much wasted potential in the Custom Games options that have been severely limited, even with some gametypes and options completely removed since Halo 3. I mean, really. What could the point in that possibly be? Why remove Juggernaut goal areas? Why take out VIP completely? Why limit the Juggernaut's weapon to being a Gravity Hammer? For every option they've added, there's two that have been taken out.

Most games I love that everyone seems to hate, are generally not talked about, forgotten, or just unheard of now.

Like Advent Rising, or Cryostasis.

Used to be Painkiller too, till Yahtzee touched it.

So I guess it's not so much hate as it is....complete apathy.

Final Fantasy 12

best FF game IMHO but it is always hammered by people here. AlsoKillzone 2. People ***** about the controls but all I hear is "Its not like everything else I've played before so I'll just disown the game because I refuse to take the time to learn how to master the controls." The entire Halo series gets a lot of flack on these boards for not being Half-Life (I understand it's popular in the extreme elsewhere, though you wouldn't guess so from what I've seen on the interwebs), but I personally love it for the nonlinear and smoothly flowing combat, seamless transition to vehicles which handle well (except for the Warthog at first), great storytelling through expertly done cutscenes, pleasing art style and excellent music. Come to think of it, Halo's music is the one thing about it I've never seen anybody hate on.

Now I wonder how long until some butthurt Valve fanboy with a persecution complex brings up Half-Life 2...

I guess CoD: MW2.

Yes the singleplayer was short and confusing but I was still fun as hell to play and watch. As for it's multiplayer the core of it is great, sadly the exploits and players kind of ruined it but I still love it.

I think Halo and Half-Life are both great. Do I win?

I suppose, in that you're pretty much the only person I've ever seen with that opinion. Which means you must be a fan of Half-Life who isn't an elitist prick! MIND. BLOWN.

(Yes of course I'm joking here, I know there are many perfectly reasonable HL fans.)

Well, I do think they're great in different ways. While I love HL2's story, varied gameplay, and expertly done pacing, I think Halo's campaign is just okay. But Halo's matchmaking is by far the best game to play with friends on the same Xbox, and with forge and custom games, a massive number of different gametypes and variations can be made with ease. Granted, a lot of those options have been axed since Halo 3 for seemingly no reason, but still... I challenge any other game to let me a make a variant where one player on each team wanders around a maze, either finding and capturing territories or hunting down the other player, each guided by a teammate looking down from above...

I, for one, think that both Halo and Half life are O.K, not great but not bad either. I also think that the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series is amazing, ESPECIALLY Clear Sky.

Alpha Protocol.

I can look past the bugginess and the cliched storyline to the cool choice-making system, interesting dialogue, tons of characters, fun level progression system.

All of my friends that live down the block despise Minecraft for some reason, which I cannot fathom.

I'd say Final Fantasy XI.
I have recently quit from it but it is not an experience I regret at all. Often when people comment on it I tend to hear "It doesn't count as a Final Fantasy because it's an MMO". I always think it's funny because the stories in it are absolutely beautiful, expansive, deep, and to me certainly feel very much like they belong in a Final Fantasy game.
I mean don't get me wrong, I'm not saying everyone should have played it, it is certainly not a game for people who didn't already enjoy MMOs and had a lot of time on hand; but I think it's a shame that it just gets little more than a dismissive hand wave.
