I think we all have games we truly love and can spend hours wrapped up in, but for whatever reason, maybe the level design is awful, maybe we've seen it ten gazillion times, or maybe it's just frustratingly difficult... whatever the reason we HATE this one section of the game. It could be the very beginning before all the cool stuff opens up, it could be that one series of quests we groan about but need to complete, maybe it's the ending and how it just... isn't up to par. Shares your least favorite parts about your favorite games.

Keep it relevant to areas, levels, quests, locations, etc., not gameplay mechanics except where they may apply specifically to that part.

Any good game with 'dream' or dream-like levels. Dragon Age 1 for example. I enjoyed the game except that stupid fade sequence.
Also any good game that takes away my abilities and slows me down (usualy by blocking the sprint button) to "enjoy" the story elements.

The sewer level. The sewer level is the worst part of any game it shows up in. Who the hell wants to trudge through shit? It's also more likely to feature the cardinal video game sins of poison and status effects. The water will probably slow you down. The most visually interesting enemy you're likely to encounter are rats.

Dark Souls managed to make the formula even worse by featuring rats, shit, poison, and goddamn curses.

Any time Metal Gear Solid 5 (or really most stealth games period) force you to get into a fight.

Your games are terrible at the action part; please stop forcing us into them. MGS 5 doesn't have many of these scenes but when it does force you into a fight (specifically mission 29), it's just awful and frustrating and awful and did I mention frustrating?

This is ESPECIALLY true if we're getting into an action part because the cut scene did something that you would never ever do as a player using stealth (see how often Adam Jensen stumbles into the boss battles just running around in Deus Ex Human Revolution).

This goes to all escort mission in any video game. I don't think I've come across one which was any more fun than if I'd just been allowed to go all-out, guns blazing instead.

The most self-aware escort mission I've come across is Max Payne 2, where you have to escort this big, useless whino for criminal master mind, an entire mission. But the hilarious part is how he is dressed in a gigantic cartoon costume, with a head so large he doesn't fit through regular doors. That was actually funny. But it was still an annoying escort mission.

Bioshock Infinite: Fighting the ghost lady three times. Seriously an annoying boss fight in the hardest difficulty

Ocarina of the time: WE all know just how much Water Temple annoyed us

Halo CE: The Library. FUCK that mission

Star Wars The Force Unleashed: Bringing down a star destroyer while tie-fighters are trying to destroy you and the star destroyer tries to re-position itself.

Dead Space 2: The eye surgery sequence. If you are a half centimeters off, then.....

Call of Duty: Black Ops II. Superb FPS game with some of the best storytelling in the genre. But the awkward, clunky, frustrating Strike Force missions are "Welp, I'm done!" material.

That's alot of games, and alot of games that I love to play because I have alot of buys that did not disappoint. I'd have to go through the list of everything I've played...and I'm 35 years old! So, I'm just gonna nip it in the bud by saying that I've been there and leave it at that.

Fallout 3: Growing up. Fun the first time, maybe couple after...but let me just play the game. Same with Oblivion and Skyrim. I like the idea behind making an involved interesting tutorial...but let me skip it after doing it once.

Pok?mon R/B/Y: Rock Tunnel and Silph Co. Ugh...

As another example, I love DK64, but that game has one glaring, frustrating design issue.

Those little shits will never go in the hole properly. They'll just gleefully shuffle around the hole as you start to grind the analogue stick into powder.

Skyrim. Having to go through all the College of Winterfell bullshit. Magic is not fun, but if you don't use during the quest, then what's the point?

While it's far from one of my favorite games, the dream sequence in Max Payne (1) was by far the worst part of the game, that baby wail still haunts me!

I tried to think of all the games I played with Sewer Levels, Final Fantasy XII, Secret of Evermore, Baldur's Gate (all of them including Dark Alliance), Super Mario (especially RPG), Oblivion...

Yeah they all suck in their own way, not sure they've ever ranked up there with "worst part" for me though.

All the beginnings of Bethesda RPGs have become this for me, mostly due to the sheer number of new characters I roll, and having to go through the same boring intro every time with very little variation.

Here's a few of mine:

Suikoden II I love the story of this game, but I love even more expanding your base and the massive collectathon for various recruits and other items to build it, so it's always a painstakingly slow process to get from the beginning to when you finally unlock the base for your own use. All Suikoden games are this to some extent, but since 2 is my favorite, it's also the one I feel the longing for most.

Oblivion The whole Kvatch sequence is quite irksome for some reason, especially for someone who hates letting any side characters die, I feel like the whole thing is a babysitting experience. Not quite so bad as doing the tutorial dungeon for the 150th time though.

Final Fantasy XII While I generally enjoy most of the game, it has some frustratingly long dungeons, particularly Barheim Passage where you have to constantly detour to restore power to the darkened tunnel, and Stilshrine of Miriam which is just enormous and confusing.

The Legend of Zelda, Lunar Silver Star Story, Super Mario RPG, Magic of Scheherazade, et al You know those mazes that consist of the exact same room with four exits? Yeah you know the ones... the ones where the only way through is to know the pattern before going in? I ****ing hate those!

Ninja Gaiden Black - Military base

Diablo 2 - Any map that spawns gloams or bone fetishes

Dota 2 - When your team is getting rolled but the other team prolongs your inevitable defeat :p

Drakan The Ancients Gates - The Shadowmire. A real long haul through muck. It is actually a good level, but it is the first place you do, and you really only want to do it because it gets you the dragon. If it was an optional place with a cool weapon or armour, it would be sweet.

Path of Exile - Fighting Dominus or the last boss, also the new labyrinth boss. Just feel extremely tedious. Way too much dodging required. Boss fights always felt off to me in isometric arpgs though. I think the best boss is the second one. The attacks require dodging but they are usually spaced apart so you can get a good amount of whacking in before dodging. Whereas the other ones are like one or two hits before you have to move. Annoying when you have to do this for 10 minutes.

Mass Effect - Virmire. Fucking me! I want both Kaidan and Ashley! And I totally ship Ashley and Kaidan!

Bioshock: Lets be honest. Turing into a Big Daddy stopped the game dead for like an hour.

Fallout New Vegas: The distinct lack of getting hammered and getting Mr. King to marry you and Cass. I mean what the fuck?! A Vegas game without a drunken wedding?! Why not just take out the gambling, prostitutes and surprisingly taste shrimp scampi?!

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess : It's my favorite Zelda game. That mission where you have to escort a carriage while riding a horse was absolutely awful. It may not be as bad as the stealth sections of Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask, but it is truly awful and exemplifies everything wrong with escort missions.

Mass Effect : Part of me wants to just point to the Mako. In reality, the worst part is the on-foot stuff, especially when you start facing groups of Biotics. Your friendly AI is too shit to deal with them, and their AI is basically to kamikaze you, spamming a seemingly infinite resource of biotic power along the way. Easily some of the most unbalanced AI I've ever seen, and it makes the on-foot sections somehow worse than the "screw physics and sensible controls" Mako sections.

The Smouldering Lake from "Dark Souls III".

It's a massive pain in the arse with various occupational hazards, reuse of previous enemies with the exception of an irritating fireball magician and the worst 'player' NPC enemy in the game. It's interesting visually (certainly more so than Lost Izalith for the burning tree motif), but a chore to playthrough.

Whilst it's technically optional, it's also quite vital in some parts. An NPC questline requires you to go there. There are both kinds of items that boost your estus flask to collect there. There are a few pyromancy tomes if you're into that. Plus if you're doing all bosses you get a quite mediocre affair to deal with, even if the lore and arena is quite poignant.

Hell yeah. It's even worse when you keep dying and and resurrecting, and each time the ghost gets more and more health, so after fighting for a good twenty minutes you realise you are no closer to winning than when you started.

I really liked the dream sequences in Max Payne 1 since I thought it did a nice job characterizing Max and trying to show what he was going through internally. They were absolutely tone-shifty but I thought they were the one good instance of a dream-sequence in games. I can agree that the dream/Fade sequences in Dragon Age: Origins were garbage though...I love how at one point you're given the choice between going into The Fade or murdering a kid in front of its screaming mother. I don't think it's ever been that easy for me to want to kill a child in any game.

The Flood in general ruin Halo for me...Once I beat mission 5 I consider myself done with Halo CE for example and I think the mid-point of Halo 2 and 3 work the same. It may be sooner for 3 actually as I remember that one being Flood heavy.

I hate the Forced Stealth Sections that you sometimes see in The Legend of Zelda. There was a not-very-bad one in Link Between Worlds but getting into Hyrule Castle in Ocarina is more annoying for me than the Water Temple and when you're trying to find your sword in the Forsaken Fortress it's just...it's just much-much worse. I should also mention The Water Temple which is annoying in every version of Ocarina of Time that isn't the 3DS version but the temple I hate above all others is the Great Bay Temple. Even in the 3DS version, the puzzles seem obtuse and strangely, I feel a greater sense of restriction since in the 3DS version the ice arrows are very limited in where you're allowed to use them.

The first 2 or so hours of any-given Pokemon where all you can do is tackle, growl, leer and/or scratch. Furthermore, I hate how much you need to use HMs in Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire. It just seems ridiculous to me that there are four water-based HMs that you absolutely need to use to get through the narrative of the game. I'm sure we could have done without Whirlpools, Waterfalls and Dives.

I love playing Final Fantasy VII but I hate the flashback sequence you have to sit through once you get to Kalm. When you leave Midgar that's greatly symbolic! You're free to explore the world!! Except no, you need to go to this specific town and enjoy an hour of story-time. Similarly, I don't like the Flashbacks in Final Fantasy VIII (at least I can save and fight in those).

I don't really like the combat in the Arkham games. It started out fine but it just gets tedious after a while to me' not nearly as exciting or satisfying as the stealth arenas. I do really like to get 100% of the Riddler's stuff though.
