As far as I can recall, the circumstances basically always involve physical and digital.

For instance, I still own my PS1 copies of FF8 and FF9, but I also bought them on the Playstation Network. There's a bunch that fall in this category.

The only games I own two actual physical copies of are FFXII and Rogue Galaxy for PS2. In both cases, I found a new copy for next to nothing and decided it couldn't hurt to have a spare copy still sealed, either in case I destroy/lose the original or they start selling for a ton on ebay.

And you rewarded them for it, eleven times.

I have multiple copies of a few games so I can play them on different platforms. Monkey Island 1 & 2, Oblivion, the Oddworld games. I also got Prince of Persia: SoT HD remake because it's in 3D.

Mass Effect I. Bought the box version, then again on Steam later. I was hoping one of the two would run smoothly enough to allow me to finish the game. No dice.

I've bought StarCraft three times but always to replace broken discs so I'm not sure that counts.

And Portal because, hey, doesn't everyone have at least two copies?

Just an example (because I've got some more games more than once):

"Beyond Good & Evil":
1.) PC-CD First Edition Amaray (Europe),
2.) GameCube Version
3.) PS2 Version
4.) PC-CD Big Box Release (US)
5.) Steam-Download (because none of the original PC versions run on Windows 7)

Mass Effect 2

I had this sucker on the first day of its release. Trouble is, recently I've been unable to use Xbox Live. Playstation Network, though, works wonderfully. Since I wanted Arrival, to be able to access expansions for Mass Effect 3, and figured that I liked the Dualshock better than the 360 controller anyway, I'd pick it up for the PS3.

I buy the Bard's tale repeatedly and give them away to my friends. It's a great game for the total cost of 3-7$ used and 15$ new.

EDIT: I think I have 4 copies of C&C Red Alert because it came in a lot of different strategy packs and C&C bundles

Final Fantasy VIII (2) - Got the original black edition because I HAD to have it. Then got the PSN version so I could play it on my psp anywhere.

Final Fantasy X (3) - First lent to a friend and the disc got screwed so he got me a replacement which is my second. However, it's platinum. So I went out and got an original release version that came with the bonus disc with interviews. It was then, I realised how amazing Kazushige Nojima is with his writing.

Little Big Planet (2) - I got the PS3 version for Christmas. I got the PSP version bundled when I bought my PSP.

I have Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 for 360 and Mac. I also have Ocarina of Time on the N64, Virtual Console and iQue (bonus cookie if you can tell me what an iQue is), I suppose Master Quest counts as well since that came with Wind Waker.

MW2. The POS kept resetting my stats every time I logged in, I got a new one from Activision costumer service, same thing happened, got another and then gave up when it happened a third time.
MW2 is like a David Attenborough Insect special, you learn about a new bug every day.

So with the Humble Frozenbyte Bundle brought, I now own two copies of Trine and it made me wonder how many of copies you have of a game. Note this is for games you have multiple copies of at the same time not for games you have lost and then brought again.

Other games that I have multiple copies of it Diablo 2 I have 3 of the game and 3 of the expansion, the reason for this is to make sure there are some extra for LAN parties.
Heroes of might and magic I have 3 copies of the 3rd game and 2 of the 4rd game, the reason was that I borrowed a friend my copy of the 3rd and then missed it so must that I brought it again. Then later after I had gotten the 4rd there was a sale on a package with both the 3rd and the 4rd plus all the expansions that I had to get.
PoP have the 2 first on PS2 and a package with all 3 games on the PC.
Hitman 2 on the PS2 and a package with all the games for PC.
i have 2 mass effect 2's, 2 bioshock 2's, and used to have 2 dragon age's. my brother goes to college, and we buy the same games. and when he comes home, he drops off his. 'cept dragon age, which got sold.
