For me, the big one is The Witcher. I finished it recently and have been thinking about why it didn't click for me for a few days now. On paper it's pretty much everything I want in an RPG: deep levelling system, interesting world, lots of content, and really difficult decisions that you need to make.

And yet, it just didn't do it for me. There are a lot of reasons for this: crappy voice acting, especially from Geralt; too long and too frequent loading times, even in the Enhanced Edition; repetitive combat; and awful quest design which resulted in more back-and-forth busywork than Halo 1.

But I've put up with that sort of stuff in RPGs before. No, the big problem with The Witcher, for me, was that I couldn't care less about what happened to any of the characters. It's a risk you take in intentionally making the game dark and gritty, and the result here is that all the characters are either dull as dishwater or massive jerks. The only ones I found in any way memorable were Triss and Vincent, the former because she has a big role to play in the plot, and the latter because of a detail I won't spoil. Even then they still weren't as interesting to me as BioWare's weakest NPCs.

The terrible voice acting plays a role here, particularly with Geralt: if you're going to give your RPG protagonist a voice, which I don't think you need to, make sure you give him one that doesn't suck. And, obviously, it doesn't help that Geralt himself is pretty boring as a protagonist. I can't for the life of me work out why they made him amnesiac but don't allow you to determine his personality in any meaningful way. To paraphrase Doctor Manhattan: why should I care about a world I have no personal stake in?

So, what were the games you should have liked?

I should have loved The Witcher 2.

A western RPG with player choice and a deep narrative?

Great!

I couldn't even get past the 2nd chapter...

I couldn't either. But that was mainly because it melted my laptop. Okay, there were other factors involved too I suppose...

OT: SHOULD have liked Gungnir... but after I finished it, I just summed the entire thing up with a big "...meh". Yes, I only realised it was boring after I finished it, I'm slow (and stubborn) like that.

Another bump for The Witcher 2. I was very put off by the excessive "in your face" grimdark the game goes on about. You can't go 5 minutes without somebody loudly bragging about random seedy shit they've done this week or references to implied rape and/or murder.

God I understand the theme guys, stop shoving it in my fucking face!

I didn't even get out of Flotsam.

I guess the gameplay was ok, nothing too special though. Gerald wasn't the most interesting protagonist ever and neither were any other characters that interesting themselves. 'Cept maybe Roache. He was pretty swell.

Also DMC3. I do sort of like the game but that is solely because the relationship between Dante and Vergil carries the game entirely. There was nothing else I was bothered about at all. The swordplay was decent but god I can't even begin to list all the terrible design decisions.

Random out of place key puzzles, confusing level design, stupid backtracking, A FUCKING BOSS RUSH and a load more. The new DMC threw all that shit out the window as far as i'm concerned.

I guess Persona 3 as well. My dislike of the main character dragged that game down completely in my eyes. As far as i'm concerned that guy secretly despises all of his "friends" and would much rather be left alone to sulk. Everything I see points me in that direction.

I'll just say that the conversation options were always 2 points more dickish than I would like. It's either "no fuck you" or "maybe" or "ehh sure" zero enthusiasm or positivity anywhere. Shame since the entire rest of the cast was damn interesting. Good job ruining the game my player character friend!

I'm gonna have to join in on the lack of love for The Witcher. I actually thought the first one was alright, if nothing special. But the combat in the 2nd game downright pissed me off, I really couldn't stand it. Here's hoping that Cyberpunk actually has decent gameplay.

Also the Deus Ex series. I've enjoyed other FPS/RPG hybrids greatly, such as Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines or Fallout: New Vegas, but neither the first Do Sex nor Human Revolution clicked for me, and I'm not sure why.

Far Cry 2
Its open world shooter, and yet it was so boring it has turned me off the entire franchise (i loved far cry 1).

Morrowind
Huge lore, huge map, a lot of possibilities. sadly a very very broken gameplay. you either are utter crap afraid to meet any mosnter in the game or invicible god. also ocne you enter same cave 10th time because its not really possible to design 400 unique caves fast it really becomes a rush run. still, almsot 200 hours and counting.

Conmand and Conquer
Strategy that is fluent and well balanced? i love that. yet this game seems to be all kinds of boring and annoying. one of my most unliked games ever.

I should have loved World of Tanks, but it was too grindy and the matchmaking sucked, so I could never get any XP.

Gonna have to agree with The Witcher.
The Witcher 2 is much better though so that's good.

I think I should have liked Shogun 2 Total War, but it turned out to be a bit boring. I never even finished the first campaign. Have no idea why it didn't catch my attention - all the previous chapters did.

I share your frustration about The Witcher. I didn't like the 1st chpater either, although I'm a huge fan of the books about Geralt by Sapkoswki.

Probably this. I also should be loving Dark Souls now but it's a bit sour playing it when I bought it for a PC. It's a good, no, a great game but the controls are arse on Keyboard and mouse(yet somewhat managable) and being locked on 30 FPS is silly. I can only hope my old LogiTech controller works for it. If I can find that damned thing.

Another notch for The Witcher 2.

Great visual design, interesting looking characters, and an epic scope. Yet I could not give a shit about anything that was happening. The monotone voice acting didn't help much either.

Dragon Age: Origins, and well, anything made by BioWare. So many people say they are such great games, but they are just so boring to me, and the "combat" is rather pathetic.

Also Claptraps Robot Revolution (or whatever it was). Claptraps were hilarious, Borderlands in general was hilarious, but then this DLC was rather bland and also boring.

Not entirely serious, maybe.

Bulletstorm

I love games that are unabashed in their self-indulgence of violence, ridiculousness, and crazy high-action.

The game unfortunately failed to catch my interest. It does have it's moments of glee and silly fun. But... something about it stops it from being enjoyable.

I can't put my finger on it. But if I were to blame a single thing, it's probably how goddamned ugly it is. I wonder if it was People can Fly who decided on this art direction, or if it was Epic Games? Probably Epic Games.

After all, Epic seems to only have one art direction for their games: Shit. And Bulletstorm looks like a piece of toilet paper I wiped my ass with twice after eating Taco Bell.

I know graphics don't make games and all that. But I just can't stand looking at this game. Even though, from the sound of it and from the little I've played, i really SHOULD enjoy it a lot.

...Not playing The Witcher 2, that's for sure.

I actually really wanted to play this game, and was so bummed that it was only on PC. Then it was finally annouched for consoles and I thanked my lucky stars...

I bought it day one, played it for about 5 hours, and I couldn't have been more bored. It was like Rice Crackers: the videogame. Went back to the store the next day and traded it in for a much better game... which oddly enough I can't remember now.

Man, my inner hipster is wishing I had a different answer to redirect the flow of the thread, but I don't.

So yeah, The Witcher 2. I'd heard so many good things about it, so when I saw it for a fiver in the Steam sale, I jumped all over that mother. Curiously, it was only a day after a friend of mine (who isn't a huge gamer, but is a huge fantasy nerd) bought it for 360.

We both reached the same conclusion, I'm afraid. Story was just that little bit too morally grey and murky, Geralt was a little too boring and the combat flat out sucked. I don't mind challenge, but honestly I felt that my chance of success in any given battle was utterly random. The only character I liked, at least as far as I got into it, was Triss. And after the hilariously OTT sex scene (yes, fine, part of me enjoyed it - no, not that part... good grief), and subsequently being shoved into a jaw grindingly frustrating boss fight, I just lost all drive to carry on.

Sorry Projekt RED, I just don't like your game :(

I know I'm about to feel judgement rain down on me, but I'll stick to Skyrim, thanks. At least that game knows what sunlight is.

Bioshock fits the bill as well. Well plotted story, as far as I can make out. Different sort of setting, guns and magic powers. I just got bored. Nothing about the combat appealed to me, not even the idea of taking pictures of enemies to make them easier. And once I accidentally ruined the twist, well that killed any chance I had of finishing it.

Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2. I should have loved you game! Bright and colourful using all the wii has. But I've been and done it all game, I've just been and done it all before and you failed to entertain me past the first few planet thingys. The music is still great though, but I just don't love the game when I should have done.

Yep, Witcher here as well. And Dark Souls. And the Red Alert series, oddly enough.

The Witcher 1 for me. I did buy it, and got through the first chapter and part of the second one. And then I just got...very bored with all of it. The constant having to run back and forth, the timed clicking based combat, the side quest designs, the vagueness of some quests making it hard to find out what you need to do, the generally lively looking world which, when viewed from up close was pretty shallow and boring...yea.

The Witcher 2 fixed most of that for me though. I love it quite a bit. And I think the witcher 3 with a more open world and less of a focus on sex and more on love will be even better.
