Games you think everyone should at least try.

The Secret of Monkey Island because it's one of the most funny games, with amazing characters, great dialogue, engrossing story and varied gameplay. You'll get lost in its world and feel like a wannabe pirate in an amazing adventure. This is a game everyone should play and love. The Special Edition has higher resolution graphics, but the old pixelated graphics also are charmy and in this version you can choose whichever you want at anytime. This new edition also has spoken dialogues, which is really well done.

After you play it you could check the sequel Monkey Island 2 - Le Chuck's Revenge.

It's a bit clunky, I will admit, but the gameplay is REALLY good. Plus, with the way society is starting to go...It's a scary look at a possible future. I REALLY recommend it.

Total War series, anything from Rome onwards. People seem to dismiss it because they don't like strategy games, not realising that the RTSs they don't like are completely different to Total War. I'm terrible at RTS games and rarely enjoy them, but I kick ass on Total War.

Already been said, but Total Annihilation. It's like Supreme Commander (literally, it's the predecessor) except better. And this recommendation is from a guy who, as stated, isn't a fan of RTss.

Pretty much anything by Valve. Anything ever. They're consistently great.

See the post right above yours? Read the one above that. But you hit on something else that's great about Deus Ex: it does feel kind of like something that could happen (at least until it goes off into wild conspiracy theories, by which time you are thoroughly immersed in it anyway).

Want to know something kind of creepy? Play the game, and when you're on Liberty Island, look at the NYC skyline. Something is missing. The developers' explanation for why that particular building is missing? Terrorists blew it up.

No one's mentioned Killer7 yet? Possibly one of the weirdest, most unique games I've played and is still my favorite game of all time. It's also another one of those experiences where you have to think and give your own opinion on what it's about, because it won't spoon feed you anything. Though you can still play through with a surface level mentality and enjoy never knowing what's going to happen next, because really nothing like it has been done before, or after.

They've already been said but I'll say them again!

Okami: Wonderful Zelda type game which even manages to do some things better than Zelda does. Has a wonderful art style and it has character and charm bursting out if every seam. Beautiful music too.

Driver SF: A very solid arcade racer that deserves attention because of it's very unique and innovative shift mechanic. The premise may sound ridiculous but it makes perfect sense in the context of the game. And there are plenty of games out there which seem to have ridiculous or crappy stories that have gone on to be classics because of gameplay. If you're interested in racing games at all it's really worth a look.

Braid: Amazingly gorgeous puzzle platformer which totally screws with your head. Ingenious puzzles which give you a great sense of achievement when you solve them. The time control mechanic is just inspired and implemented in the best possible way. It's something that just needs to be experienced.

No More Heroes (1 & 2): Games on the Wii which prove it's not just a platform full of shovelware for kiddies. Suda 51 at his best creating hilarious outrageous characters in a comical and surreal setting with cool weapons and lots of gore. Completely drenched in gaming iconography too.

I also think that everyone should try out the rival franchise to one they adore. They should do it with an open mind too. There's a reason why franchises have rivals. They share a lot of the same appeal and both do it very well. Why hate on something when you could be having twice the fun? Give everything a chance.

X-Com: UFO Defense, minimal download size, low price, a phone has the processing power to run it, and probably the greatest game ever made. There is nothing stopping you.

If you own a PC capable of running Source games, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines is one of the best RPG games ever made, though it does need some patching to get working properly.

snipPlanescape Torment- an old PC game, graphics have aged decently and gameplay is fine, but the writing is some of the most creative and bizarre of any game I've ever played. Characters you will not find anywhere else. A brothel where the prostitutes specialize in intellectual debate. A house that got tired of
being renovated and swallowed its builder. The physical embodiment of the letter O. Just about every conversation you have in this game is memorable.

Bulletstorm.

It got written off as a "dude-bro" game and thus many people missed out on what was probably one of the best shooters, if not one of the best games, of 2011.

Hell yeah, bro.


Just kidding. Seriously though, Bulletstorm just looked like a big-mouthed bro story at first, but personally I was surprised by how straightly played the plot was in the end and how story didn't feel five minute short (at least twice I thought it had reached a definite end only for it to continue on for another chapter or two). Not to mention how plain well fun it was to creatively gut everyone you met.

Also second Psychonauts, Total Annihilation and the Monkey Island series. Overlord is another great game that people should check out, because there's hard to find something not awesome about being an evil overlord with your own evil tower and an evil army of evil minions to do your evil bidding.

Shadow of The Colossus. An older game for the PS2. It is one of the prime examples of games that can be considered art, and is my personal favorite game on the PS2.

Jak and Daxter (1, 2, & 3)
Ratchet and Clank(original, Going Commando, Up your Arsenal, skip the fourth, and go on to the PS3 games) Both Ratchet and Clank and Jak and Daxter are the greatest platformers I've ever played. Also, the Uncharted series is good too. Another platformer, by the way.

Spyro the Dragon(1, 2, and 3.)I only reccomend the first three Spyro games because all after are atrocities.

Crash Bandicoot (All but the newer ones) Another great game series that has been destroyed over time.

I have more, but meh, these are the best ones I can think of. If you want genre specific ones, you only need ask of me. I'm only 16, and I didn't really start truely seeing the beauties of video games until about 2 or 3 years ago, so yeah, I'm in the same boat as you.

I'd vote Jagged Alliance 2. It's still friendly on the eyes, is surprisingly user friendly for a game of that depth, and great story and RPG elements. The fact that Sir-Tech didn't make enough money off of it to stay in business is a testament to just how cruel this world is.

It's a point and click adventure game for the PC with truly engaging characters and an interesting story told between two worlds. The protagonist, April Ryan, has widely been praised as one of gaming's less stereotypical females which is refreshing.

I played it not long ago and was pleasently surprised to find myself gripped until the very end.

I have not seen anyone talk about crackdown. This game starts you off as a pansie, and then after surviving a couple of gang hitsquads you become a monsterous badass.

Golden Sun 1 and 2 were also pretty good. I really loved that story.

It's 100% free and was an amazing experience. Though calling it a game is a bit of a stretch...

EDIT: Though you said you are young, this game is 18+ so keep that in mind.

You can always just turn of adult content. Bye bye 18+ rating.

OT: Killing Floor just to realize how fun a multiplayer experience can be even if you cock everything up. Also DOSH!

Morrowind (PC, xBox) is an amazing RPG that balances core mechanics with playability. That is a personal preference though. (Oblivion took stuff out and was more playable. Daggerfall had more stuff, but was harder to play)
M.U.L.E(PC, NES, several others) was a great strategy game back in the day and has a freeware remake at http://www.planetmule.com/
Dragon Quest 5(SFC, NDS) has a very unique story and is still my favorite RPG.
Earthbound (SNES, GBA) is a hilarious and fun classic RPG.

God Hand.

It may not have the greatest controls, camera angles, and level design, but by Odin that is a great game. It's funny and very very addicting, and I know I've had a lot of fun playing it.

Here's my list:

-Demon's Souls/Dark Souls: THE Best game of 2011 (with Skyrim), it has a good story, an interesting world, the music is awesome also, it's how games were back then. They throw you into this world and let you discover everything by yourself. It's THE game that draws the line between Casual gamers and Real gamers.

-Silent Hill/Resident Evil: The two series leading the Survival-Horror genre. Probably one of the best game genre in history because it was the beginning of games with deeper stories than usual. People should at least try one of the games from the two leading series. Im talking about Resident Evil 1,2,3 and (to some extent) 4.

-Killer 7: A game visually striking with an incredibly complex story.

-Kirby Superstar: My favorite game ever and a milestone in platforming and in video game music.

-Unreal Tournament 2004: During a certain period, arena shooters were really popular (Quake 3, Tribes, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Unreal Tournement) but UT2004 is THE absolute best arena shooter...EVER. The music was fitting, the guns were awesome and the single player was really fun and challenging.

-Lunar 1 and 2: A JRPG with a really good story with a lot of twists and turns, good characters, good music and fun combat.

-Twisted Metal 2 and Black: The two best car combat games in history with an incredibly dark story, good music and cool characters.

-Earthbound: Incredible Story, very cool music, fun combat and funny dialogue and enemies.

-Mega Man 3: A milestone in platforming with incredible music.

-Super Mario bros 1, 3, Super Mario World and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi Island: Milestones in platforming and also games that are really really fun to play (especially Super Mario World 1 and 2).

-D0OM/Goldeneye 64: The game that put FPS on the map and still in the top 3 (Doom) and the first game that tried something different with the genre.

-Myst: One of the most complicated adventure game in history, this game will make you ether swearing your heart out or make you beg for more.

-Kingdom Heart: A twist in the JRPG genre with probably the most unique story to date.

-Counter-Strike: Source/Team Fortress 2 : Still two of the most fun games to play on your PC online.

-Duke Nukem 3D: Still one of the best FPS in gaming history. A game that is a required try when you look at today's industry.

-Gran Theft Auto: Vice City: THE best GTA ever, great music, great characters, a story that is a mix between Scarface and Carlito's Way, very varied missions and a spot-on 80's feel.

-Elder Scroll SKYRIM: A really really fun RPG with a great environment and a lot to do.

-Manhunt: Still one of the most violent games but also one featuring some of the funniest NPC's in video game history. Also, with an original story and great controls.

Honestly, with the voice acting and hundreds of conspiracies thrown in... Deus Ex's story doesn't hold up from a modern standpoint. Still a great game, but... laughable story. Although that's almost in a good way.

On Deus Ex... I have to respectfully disagree. I've been playing games for over 16 years and it's still, in my view one of the better stories I've seen. You're not supposed to believe that all those conspiracy theories are true... as with all fiction, it requires some level of willing suspension of disbelief, and I can see why some people could have trouble with that when it's throwing in a dozen conspiracy theories plus the kitchen sink, but it ties them together well, and calling it "laughable" seems... well... laughable.

I have to wholeheartedly agree with you on Morrowind, though. I still think that it is the only really good game that Bethesda's ever made. It's a diamond in the rough, yes, but still a diamond.
