Cod...I hate it, plus, when you think about it, it's kind of for casual gamers, whenever I look at my friends' achievement list the only games I see are CoD and Fifa...They're not refined gamers who love the classics, they just love shooters and killing people.
Honestly, just think about it, I don't see CoD players playing anything else at all, no matter how good the game is, they're not REAL gamers.
:p
What does that make me? I have beat just about every COD, and played through Halo 1,2,3, and Reach (not a big fan of the game, but as huge as it is I wanted to see if they improved what I didn't like in each one). I also have nearly 100% Mass Effect 1 and 2, Fallout 3, Oblivion, and have over 120 games in my collection from nearly every genre?

Moral of the story: blanket assumptions are bad.
I was saying about the ones who only play CoD mate :)
Ah touche. I misunderstood. :D
No problem my friend! I just think it's unfair for people who only ever play CoD, to be the ones who have made it apparently the greatest game ever and unfortunately the best selling, when it's just so casual, in my eyes...
Don't flame me!

And I LOVED this game... But what's done is done.
At the time I didn't have a gaming rig (a year ago) I used to go back to this and its expansion (that wasn't just 15$ for a multi-map!) when I wanted to have a good shooter experience.

Final Fantasy 12, 13, The Last Remnant, Infinite "not-a-real-word" Undiscovery. These titles have caused a decline in my love for Japanese games, and they have polluted me against a lot of ones that aren't so bad. Seriously, the only Japanese game I've bought recently was Dead Rising 2, and that was made by Canadians technically.

What is with the animosity to Fallout 3. I'm not going to derail this thread completely so whoever does it has to do it in twenty (four-letter being a word) words or less. I got into the series at 3 and thought it was fantastic. I picked up 1 and 2 and tactics, and I see the faint glitter of why the series is so popular, but honestly it's hidden under so much obtuseness I can't tolerate it some days.

Unacceptable answers and why:

It's not turn-based/Yeah turn-based in a massive sandbox... root canals are more fun.
Limited Dialogue options/You got full V/O out of the deal.
Charisma is now useless/It's still was pretty useless.

+To Fallout 3, I'm not one to petition graphics most days, but the retro-futurism needed 3D bad. You can hardly tell it's there in Fallout 1 if it weren't for the posters and ads and what not.

EDIT: The graphical comment doesn't hold any real sway. I realize 3D was infantile in 98, but I'm just saying. Fallout on a 360 is epic.

Arguably the first game to really use cover-based shooting as a core gameplay mechanic.

I'd have listed Shenmue on here for being the first to really use QTEs during a cutscene, but eh.

now that I got my smartass drive out of the way

I'd have to say, whatever game that got the FPS genre into the bullshit that it is now

you know something's wrong when a game based on shooting the fuck out of your enemies forces you to hide like a little ***** every 6 seconds

Sonic may have gotten horrible, but the game that introduced me to the disgustingly horrible games industry was Frogger: The Great Quest for the PS2. There was an awesome Frogger top-down 2.5D grid-based platformer for the PS1 (it plays way better than it sounds), and I had my hopes up. What did I get in return? A horrible plot, a bunch of puns so horrible that I didn't even like them as a kid, and gameplay that involved either spitting at your enemies or using "frog-fu" on them, the primary difference between the two being that spitting was ranged (they even used the same button). All of this made so much worse by the cheese grater they hired as the protagonist's voice actor, who spouts out pathetic one-liners at every opportunity. It's like Nathan Drake if you take away every single redeeming quality and amplify every horrible quality ten-thousand fold. The gameplay was horrible, I had no clue where to go for some time, the small bit of replay value was ruined by the fact that you had to start an entirely new game to get anything you missed, and if I wasn't mistaken, there was a game-breaking glitch on level 2 (either that or they didn't give you any hint at all where to go after defeating the enemies). The game /literally/ made me sick. I despise its every fiber of existence, and if I find the game again, I'll smash it into pieces and send it to the dump so nobody else has to suffer through five minutes of play.

I can see where you're getting at, as a lot of my friends (including me) who play the CoD series don't seem to pick up a whole lot of games on the current gen systems outside of it. However, I think you need to be a little bit clearer on defining what a "real gamer" truly is. True you mention the "twitchy" FPS crowd who only enjoy killing people, but I think you need to go a little bit further. Because I have been playing games since the SNES generation, and have followed it pretty religiously up until this current generation, where upon I mainly just play CoD and Battlefield online maybe once or twice a week, nothing else. As a result, you won't find many achievements on my profile outside of the CoD games.

Why don't I play a lot of the other big titles on the market? Because in my opinion a lot of the new-gen games really aren't that great. Sure things have advanced in graphics and hardware abilities, but the "core" gameplay seems to be getting put aside so the 360 and PS3 can continue to show off how detailed their visuals can be. There's probably more to a lack of gameplay in recent times than simply a huge reliance on visuals, but as far as I can tell when visuals go up, gameplay seems to have a habbit of going down (but not all of the time). I won't even get started on the Wii.

So, yeah, I really don't play a whole lot of current gen games. Does that mean I'm not a "real" gamer? I guess you could say I went from being a hardcore gamer to more of a casual gamer since I've been playing them a lot less, but does that make me any less of a gamer than someone who plays every single game that comes out on the market? I would like to see a clearer definition on what being a "real" gamer truly means.

well I guess Dante's inferno as it hasn't already been said. There would be one less major press debacle.

Gears of war, because we needed MORE space marines, I want my unreal championship back epic
Sorry but m fanboy is coming out. The people you plays in gears are not space marines. They are NEVER in space, and are NOT marines. The gameplay in gears is quite well doe, its the story that needs to be worked out a little bit, thats all. Also remember nothing personnel just my fanboy side.

OT: The force Unleashed, I havent even played the second one et. Because I HATED the first one. Just wasnt fun.

It kinda seems like a hell of a lot of these decisions aren't based on the games, but are rather based on the culture the games create. I've seen things like Portal, Cod, Final Fantasy 7-10, Super Mario 64, Halo, Half Life, which are all widely regarded as the greatest set of games made.

...Games aside, the culture of those that surround it seems to be the main reason why you dudes want these gone. The culture of the damn cake jokes from Portal, or the Final Fantasy fanboys telling emotional stories of when they first saw Aeris died and cried and cried, or the continuous arguments between nerds as to whether Super Mario 64 was in fact better than Zelda (actually, I'm surprised Zelda isn't here), or the ultra casual gamer, though not casual enough to leave us be, of the Halo and Cod players. Almost every argument for why a hugely successful game should never have been made has been because it has created a culture of idiots.

Though there are a lot of titles I really do agree shouldn't have existed (Sonic games when they started stagnating, Final Fantasies after 10, Spore, almost anything made to cash in on the success of another better game), saying that you want a game like Portal, or the original Halo, or Half Life, or Final fantasy 7-10 to have flat out not existed is a little unjustified

(Ignore this if you argued that you think a game should not exist because the game itself is poor, not the lameness that surrounds it in the real world.)

Oh my, where to begin with this one..

Spyro: Enter the dragonfly - broke as hell and didn't add anything to the series.

Spore - This one speaks for itself, I think.
I'd erase A Hero's Tail over EtD, personally. That was when Spyro REALLY hit the skids. Not even my un-jaded childhood eyes could enjoy it. And those eyes enjoyed Astro Boy PS2.

but overall...

Disgaea.

I enjoyed it, but it made nearly all SRPGs to follow into epic grindfests.

so, you bought it thinking you'd be playing with goatee-Schwarzenegger, but instead you got an actually deep character?

that's what put you off?
