Games you wish weren't dead

Team Fortress Classic.
Yeah, I know it's pointless to mourn the loss of community for a 15 year old game, but man do I feel the need to load up some classic TFC every now and then. I actually think I prefer many aspects of TFC to those of TF2, yeah some aspects took time to warm up to, and it had nade spam like it was nobody's business, but it was fun as hell and managed to be the kind of game that kept me playing for hours upon hours withought any progression system or items at all.
Plus, y'know, it was my first online game so there's some rosiness in these glasses.

Haha, this is how I feel about Unreal Tournament from 1999. I enjoyed it more than its contemporaries, more than its sequels, and more than modern multiplayer shooters. And yeah, it was my first online game as well. Facing Worlds for life! That map taught me that I am a horrible person.

There is more of a community than TFC, but it isn't the same as it was.

I don't even know if I would have liked it but I was initially enthralled by Ricochet, the Goldsrc game on Steam that uses the engine Half-Life 1 ran on. I think it was free at some point because it just appeared on my game list when I installed a bunch of Goldsrc games. The multiplayer was dead, with only a few bot servers active and the bots were too good to be fun for a beginner. I remember reading, I think on the escapist, that there was a rumor that Ricochet 2 would be the first game released when Source 2 comes out, but I doubt that now that it appears Left 4 Dead 3 is a thing. I would really like to see a Ricochet sequel, just so I could play it and see if it was fun or if I was just blinded initially by curiosity.

I also liked Tomb Raider's multiplayer when it worked, but I do think it would get old pretty fast, I just never got the chance to play it enough to let it get old.

Oh, and I have recently been playing through Max Payne 3's arcade modes again and I wish the multiplayer was more active and less crappy, in that I wish it had PC features instead of Rockstar's really bad lobby system that makes it impossible to find populated games.

Burnout...

I STILL go back to playing Burnout Paradise every few months just to remember what it's like to cruise through a city at breakneck speeds without having to worry about anything getting in the way and me being annoyed...
Because crashing in Burnout games is awesome!
But instead, EA had to go and make Criterion head of NFS and since then all we've had is bastard games that have no fucking idea how to make themselves entertaining....

Hell, Criterion shut down the Burnout Paradise before I even started playing the game... So I was never able to buy the toy cars and extras... I even emailed them and they basically said there was nothing they could do because of "boring stuff" (direct quote)

But anyway, I suppose I could list a few more games on here, but that's my major vote

Alpha Protocol
A massively broken game in some regards (looking at you pistols) that was all so one of the best Western style RPG's I have ever played, it was little things like being able to take missions on in any order and this actually making a difference (Take a mission to meet a contact and he may help you out on the next mission but only if you impress him during your conversation).

It was a modern spy masterpiece and easily deserving of a sequel, it had an intriguing story with well rounded characters and the conversation mechanic was excellent (it actually felt like what you said made a difference and characters would call back to it in later conversations, it felt dynamic)

Sadly it had flaws, Pistols were op (The final boss could be killed in two seconds using the pistol to essentially stop time and then put 10 shots in to the bosses head in quick succession) and it was a 360/ps3 game but at time look like a ps2 game but this didn't stop it feeling awesome. One of my hidden gems of the last generation

(Oh and Konstantin Brayko is one of the best bosses ever, a man obsessed with the 80's. His boss fight is awesome)

Well, I wish Borderlands' online servers weren't dead. It would make Moxxi's Underdome less boring.

The news are that they are reviving it through Steamworks.

Myeh but that's just the PC version I think, I play on PS3.

Battlefield 2142, the king of Battlefield games.

What I really wish was still around though is Crimson Skies, that game provided some of the most fun multi-player dogfighting of my life.

Freespace 2. Not only the series is dead, and its body mutilated and sold for scraps, but the genre was dead for just as long...

Luckily, with the raise of indie games, some people are working on bringing the genre back, but the franchise never had a proper sendoff.

Dawn of War Retribution and Monster Hunter 1 (Monster Hunter had the servers shut down due to reasons from the third party that kept those)

The Battle Isle series from BlueByte. Clever, deep but still accessible turn based military scifi. Fun stuff. Played everything in the series until they ran it into the ground with Andosian War.

Incubation is still a fan favourite so who knows, maybe there'll be hope one day.

Giants: Citizen Kabuto


This game was amazing on so many levels. It was oozing with wonderful British humor. Had a great long single player game with 3 campaigns. The first campaign was a bit more tutorial, and centered around the guy you see there and his 4 buddies. You got jet packs and missile launchers and stealth bushes and giant backpack nukes.

The second campaign let you play as a (depending on version/patch) topless magic sea warrior. You had a sword, different bows from homing bows to sniper bows. And large amounts of magic spells like ones that slowed time in a bubble, summon a huge tornado, make you invisible ect. Also you could kinda quasi-fly, lots of fun.

And the final campaign where you were Kabuto. A giant godzilla type monster who just went on a rampage for 5 missions.


The multi player was INCREDIBLE.

Mecc vs Mecc? had that. Mecc vs Seareaper? had that too. Seareaper vs seareaper? got it. Mecc vs Mecc vs Seareaper? yeah. Mecc vs Seareaper vs Kabuto? YES. All the mutliplayer had FPS base building in the style of kidnapping the local populace to sit at your pub and build you a weapons store, walls, turrets ect.

Or be Kabuto and eat them to grow bigger.


This game was wonderful. I played tons of it on Gamespy arcade, but that was years and years ago and the servers slowly died out. I still recommend this one to my friends for the single player experience only, but not being able to play multiplayer still kinda hurts deep down.

Also it is constantly popping up on GoG.com for like $2.50 or $2.99 i think.

As soon as I saw the title, I thought of Shattered Horizons but that was ninja'd in the OP. So for my backup answer I will go with Pirates Vikings and Knights 2, which is a source engine mod that has the 3 title teams fight in a first person melee game. Every few months I will give the game a try and it seems like the only community that still plays it is in Europe so I get really bad ping when there are even people. Plus the few people that talk on that game make the whole community seem awful and are worse that most MOBA players that I have seen.

The Legacy of Kain series. Defiance ended on a cliffhanger that implied that the story was about to reach an end, and then nothing happened. I want my evil Ocarina of Time games back!

I'll second this. I want an ending to the only story that has vampires and time travel and isn't completely stupid. Also, Hostile Waters. Story written by Warren Ellis, amazing gameplay... and it was an utter failure. I'm not sure if that's because it wasn't an easy game, or because it was ugly even for the period, or why, exactly, it failed, but it's a damn shame it did.

Warhawk damnit, it was one of the most fun multiplayer experiences I've ever had. The game was fun with every single vehicle, colorful, very balanced and had some really crazy moments at times. Damnit, I miss my PS3.

WoW 3: The Frozen Throne is another one that I wish more people still played. It takes forever to get in game, and everyone you play is either absurdly good or absurdly bad.

That.... is the only set of achievements I havent gotten for the first borderlands. I got one of them, but every single frakking time I have tried to complete the other "zones" it never fails... an hour plus into it, and a mob spawns outside of the blasted arena, and I cannot finish. Every. TIME. I gave up.

Halo 3's online isn't dead at all. You can still go in and get a match going fairly easily.
