Games can be great, and they can also be udder crap, but somehow you see the games you consider crap getting 10/10 ratings and millions in sales. What are games you think are bad that become popular?

My opinion: Halo 3. I played it quite a few times, and while i think its good, most people that I know who own it think its an almighty gift from the heavens, and then they consider any other game to be completely teribble, no matter how good it actually is.

I was just fine with only having 4 Call of Duties and 7 Final Fantasies. These developers need to develop some imagination and creativity and stop making the same damn games year after year after year.

I'm not surprised that it's popular but I'm surprised that the new CoD is more popular than MW2 was. Especially after hearing a lot of people saying they would not get it after the horror that was MW2

Call of Duty: Black Ops
I'm surprised people got this game. I played it and it was pretty meh and it has a User Metascore of 6.8/10, which is pretty low due to it getting plenty of low scores. It's also amazing that they would buy it after Modern Warfare 2, which was an example of the CoD franchise falling into a pit of nothing but casual gaming.
Oh, that's right. It has "Call of Duty" slapped onto the title. Anything being marketed under CoD will sell no matter how mediocre it is.

I can't really think of any other ones, though. Black Ops is on my mind because I just got back from playing it.

You have just opened a can of CoD hate right here. For shame.

And more on topic? Final Fantasy and JRPGs in general. One of my pet hates is that it seems that to 'qualify' as a hardcore gamer people feel the need to adore poor RPGs as long as they are Japanese. Lack of choice, simplistic story telling, steretypical characters, melodrama and lack of customisation does not make a good RPG. Go play Baldur's Gate/Fallout and then we can talk about RPGs.

I'm not surprised that anything is popular any more, you could market a game about running across a hundred copy-pasted room shooting at the same 4 or 5 enemies with 14 different guns 7 of which are re-skins of the 1st 7 all the while hearing nothing but a lot of futuristic military hoopla, and with the right ad campaign and a snappy CGI trailer with some sombre music attached you'd still sell millions.

Heavy Rain. Don't get me wrong, it does have some good drama in it, but it's broken up by sims-style walking around the house sections that are just boring. I mean, one scene has you just sitting there while a camera pans to dramatic angles of a kid doing his homework. I wouldn't play a game about DOING homework, even less watching someone do theirs.

DJ hero, and Guitar Hero, and Rock Band.
With a zillion sequels and band specific spinoffs, at some point don't you think you have enough music games that you only bring out when you have a gathering with friends?

Also, it's been said, but COD and JRPGs.

Are you sure you played the same game? Apart from a few minor party issues this is one of the best multiplayer FPSs I've played. Add to that the co-op zombie mode (I mean you get to kill zombies as freaking Nixon!), single player campaign, dead ops arcade and fucking ZORK!

Ah, stagnation, how often it comes up when describing the modern games industry. Really, it's as much our fault as it is the developers and publishers. They keep making them because we keep buying them. We stop buying them, they'll stop making them.

As for the topic of overrated games, I'd have to say the Modern Warfare series. I'm one of the bizzaro-people that thinks Treyarch does a better job than Infinity Ward in terms of CoD games. You can have all the overblown set-piece action you want, but for the love of God, get off the high horse on how "realistic" your game is. Treyarch actually tries to have some fun with the concept and do some interesting stuff with it (Zombies, Dead Ops Arcade, etc...)

I agree "Final Fantasy" it was so linear, and the story line was so *meh*, but when i played Baldur's Gate, I was like "Holy shit this game is huge"! or "WTF is this dungon doing here"!? and slaughtering the weapon smith because I couldn't afford the item I wanted. Good times.

Mass Effect, Dragon Age and KOTOR. I may as well just say Bioware MMO's. I hate them, the stories are boring and the gameplay is usually wank. The only thing I can compliment is the environments, because Mass Effect does have some interesting locations.

Also, Fallout 3/NV. I'm not sure if people have built up a tolerance to it but I find that they both have awful weapon handling and retarded AI. Those 2 annoyances alone are enough to make me stop playing, I don't know how people tolerate it.

That, pretty much. Most any of the big FPS franchises that don't churn out anything that varied.

Team Fortress 2. I've explained this in the past and all the Valve fanboys throw screaming tantrums and hissy fits, so I'll just leave it at that.

A title that I like, but still don't understand how it's popular: Minecraft. Not that I don't understand it, but making millions of dollars? Whenever I played it at University, some douche or another would walk by and say, "What kind of game is that!?" No one ever comments on games otherwise, but because the graphics look terrible to someone who has never played it, I must be a complete moron for playing it.

I understand the FPS games, like Halo and CoD. They're brainless fun. I don't see why every single game needs to be *puts on deep philosophical voice* deep. *Clears throat* Some games are just fun for the sake of fun. I don't understand the hate for Black Ops at all. The haters remind me of those indie kids that think you're a CONFORMIST HIPOCRIT LOSER MAINSTREEM DOOSHBAWG if you haven't seen every shitty foreign movie that they have.

Anything Kinect at this point.

I can understand your position on Halo 3. The thing with Halo is that the first one was like a ton of bricks. It was so great at the time that many of us just fell in love with the universe. Hence Halo 3 was the culmination of something really great.

By itself Halo 3 ain't that great.
