Hi everybody. I am new to this site. The reason I found it was because as a GameSpot registered member I read about the whole Webby thing and to vote...you know the drill because this site did the same thing.

I voted for GameSpot but saw The Escapist listed as a nominee. I was curious because I never heard of them. So I came on over and I saw coverage of Six Days in Fallujah that GameSpot didn't have. As a former Marine this was right up my alley so I registered here.

Meanwhile, the Webby voting was still going on and members here were posting stuff like "I'll vote many times for you guys" or "GameSpot blows" or whatever. It reminded me of playing XBOX Live and hearing some 10 yo calling someone a fag in their prepubescent voice. Much to The Escapist staff's credit, they actively discouraged ballot box stuffing. They could have remained silent but did not.

Thank you.

While it does not excuse various member's behaviour, I believe all the Gamespot hate was inspired because of the posts that were put up under The Escapist's entry in the the Webby nominations.

But anyway, welcome to The Escapist.

Every community has idiots, the Escapist is no exception. You should've been here for March Mayhem. But a lot of people here are really cool, though. You just have to ignore the vocal minority of ass-tards. And avoid discussing God.

And props on the whole ex-Marine thing. You have harder stones than I do.

Its better that you weren't....I gotta remember to take my vacations in march from now on.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to hearing a new members opinion on the things we talk about here. Maybe your experiance at gamespot will help you form new ideas and thoughts which are original to the Escapist but either way, good luck in the future and have fun. Welcome to the Escapist.

First off, welcome to our community! I'm very glad you decided to stick around after paying us a visit. As to your complaint, not to sound all schoolyard, but GameSpot's community started it, I'm afraid. Various members started posting in the Escapist thread how NOT to vote for us, GameSpot was superior, etc., etc. We checked in on the comments several times a day (if nothing else, it was helpful for us to know what parts of our site really appealed to people, as those were the ones called out as reasons to vote for us), and I was really very sad to see so many of those kinds of comments -- on both sides. There's just no need to speak ill of the competition.

Welcome.

Unfortunately, The Escapist is a part of the internet and therefore not completely immune to the effects of said internet. I have lobbied the UN to include the Escapist as a seperate nation state so that we may enforce stringent immigration laws but Ban-Ki Moon told me to get out of his office and called security.

Sadly, we are part of the internet but with every member who knows how to spell and stay above an argument we shape our unique character.

Welcome, the pretzels are that way and here's hoping to a more intelligent future. Hope you stay for a while (you seem to be able to spell, which is a bonus), enjoy the sights and some of the more intelligent conversations about the place.

HES WORKING FOR THE OTHER SIDE, NOONE IS SAFE OUR DEFENSES HAVE BEEN BREACHED!!! -hides under the nearest table with a psp-

no I dont HATE gamespot I go there often (gamefaqs is hosted by gamespot) but I hate how everyone listens to there opinions on games, some are good (like the ffXII review) but people dont think for themselves or try the games, and my loathing for its community goes to a higher end, many of them hate ff8 >.>

so, voicing your opinion (let's not get into details just how they do it) is wrong?
But yeah, as it's been said before, every site on the internet has it's share of idiots.

I've found that GameSpot does, in fact, have a utility. That utility is that I can keep a profile which lists games that I'm interested in, and I get updates on said games. There- something nice about the other guys.

That said, the site is way too cluttered, the forums are unreadable, and it's rare to see a good discussion. It's like they try to do too much and make a mess of the whole thing.

I think that the vast majority of us mortal Escapists, as well as our more Godly staff, frown upon that behavior. In particular, the "vote many times" bit should strike a raw nerve with some of us.

Anyway, welcome and I hope you find this place as entertaining as I do.

It wouldnt be called the internet without them, sadly... but hey, they make us feel smarter and sometimes are good for a laugh or two

I like IGN's reviews, even if their rating system is a little wonky and they score high profile games better than low profile ones - especially at the start of a console generation. They're fairly detailed and they cover a lot of games. I also read Destructoid, because they cover niche titles and post articles that go deeper than reviews. I'm a huge fan of the Memory Card series - especially this article: http://www.destructoid.com/the-memory-card-20-the-message-in-the-glass-48554.phtml

The Escapist isn't the be-all and end-all of video game centric sites. It's good to compare coverage across different papers.

I certainly did not mean to imply The Escapist has the corner on the ballot box stuffing market nor anyone's opinion is invalid in regards to what is good and what is not. Taste is subjective.

I will say that I have been made to feel welcome here and I appreciate that.

Ok, I'm an ex-Gamespot forum veteran, so I have experiance on this topic. I can't stand that site. This all started after I noticed a bit of bias in their reviews. Now, bias in reviews isn't a bad thing. That's the point of a review, to give your own honest opinion. Showing only the good or only the bad is way to much for me. Then, all the good reviewers started to leave to other site. Then the Jeff Gerstman thing. God that pissed me off. But my main point is this, the community is terrible. The only interesting forum is System Wars, but that's just because fair and balanced opinions carry absolutly NO respect there. I tried to do a comparison of the PS3 and the 360, and NO ONE read the post just based on what fair and balanced means on that forum. To be blunt, that forum is a troll's paridise. So do I like Gamespot? No, but I got a free Battlefield Heroes beta key out of 'em, which I later gave to a fellow Escapist. But if you like them, your opinion, not mine.

Edit: In hind sight, I came of a tad bit douchely. It was not directed at you, just the website. Welcome to the Escapist.
