Gods, I remember spending so many hours and so much money on this damn game.
Who builds an arcade in a caravan park? I ask you! A damn shrewd businessman, that's who! Bugger-all else to do in that place!

Glad to know I'm not the only one who sank alot of quarters into beating that damn game. It was long but it was worth it. God I love old school beat-em' up's like that! :D

Pretty much that game and Turtles in Time sucked up alot of my quarters when I was young.

Wonder what some people really think about the game who've played since you can download it now.

Sounds perfectly logical to me. I grew up jamming quarters (tokens? No, actual real quarters) into all of these walk around and beat copy pasted enemies up games too.. but if you look at them without your nostalgia glasses on, they're all pretty poor games. Even for the time, they weren't particularly special except for the fact that they had better graphics and allowed more players than home console titles.

A nostalgia-free review of an ancient game. Nice to see.

Predictably enough, it has nerds getting their knickers in a twist. Also nice to see.

...

That said, picking on an arcade game's story is a bit ridiculous.

Didn't that game come out when there was like one season out?
So it is completely understandable why the story is so weird. Which the review even admits. And the complaints about Life in Hell references instead of original characters seem weird.

But this raises the question of whether you should judge retro games based on the time they were published, or by today's standards.

And given how this is a review of the Xbox Live Arcade-version, reviewing it by today's standards seems to be the right decision to me.

BTW, Doctor Monroe is not actually dead (anymore). So basically I'm a bigger Simpsons -nerd than the reviewer. Don't I feel great...

If they don't like the gameplay then fair do's, but you criticise an arcade game for having a lacklustre story! You're lucky to even get a story

Well said sir, however I think given the specific level of functionality of this game, it deserves a "4.5" IMO.

Oh, I don't disagree with the review - actually thinking about it, I knew the plot, such as it was, made no sense whilst I was playing it and the crap in the dream level really did come out of nowhere. Nowhere being a perhaps 20sec sequence in one episode.

Oh... well thanks for showing up then.

Seriously though, do people really care? Either you're reaction while playing this will be "WOOOOO Simpsons Arcade!!" or you won't want to play it in the first place.

Edit: For the record, my reaction is "WOOOOO Simpsons Arcade!!!"

Like all these games, nostalgia plays a huge part. Unless these games are bought up to todays standards, most of them play terribly. Like how Pac-Man, while still nostalgic isn't really "fun" when compared with its modern remakes (C.E and CE-DX).

TBH I can't ever remember thinking this was a good game apart from it being the Simpsons. A 3/10 is probably quite an honest review when held up to todays games.

Since when did anyone expect a good review from Gamespot? Last time I checked their reviews astounded me by how one of the big sites could produce such poor content.

People still take Gamespot seriously? That is what seems odd to me.
People taking any review seriously is odd to me..It always just 'one mans view' no matter how unbiased they claim they are. Also most reviewers play a game just to review it, which means at best 1 playthrough, sometimes not even that. Now to me any game worth anything won't be able to be fully 'reviewed' unless a player has put a tonne of hours into it, good games have alot of depth, which most of these reviewers wouldn't even come close to seeing with such limited time.

There's also this. Whoever wrote the article is one guy. One guy with an opinion. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and most of them stink. If you need some kinda validation to play a game you personally like from some asshole who's job it is it to spew his BS opinion... well my friend, I think you have other issues that need ot be looked into.
