Not really surprising, considering there's a lot of negative hype about it floating around from comments. The Metacritic [http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/final-fantasy-xiv-online] is interesting (yes, there's two 8/10 scores posted already).

Incidentally, they are indeed advertising on GameSpot, they've got two banner ads out.

And they gave Halo Reach 9.5, what's your point?

In seriousness though, the game wasn't ready for release and they're idiots for releasing it in it's current state. Hopefully reviews like this make them realize they've made a stupid mistake.

I'm enjoying it, but, it's pretty clear that it's basically just a paid beta for the PS3 version.

No surprise as I see it. There hasn't been a lot of hoo-hah about FFXIV, because many people were still angry about the mess that FFXI was. Squeenix had an opportunity here to fix everything that was bad about FFXI and make a game that could have possibly competed with WoW by the virtue of being a good mmo game with a recognizable branding./quote]

I'm assuming by this you're ignoring that the game has been running for 8 years, has kept a healthy popular of around 500k subscribers and has a metacritic score of 85.

There's a big different between "The game was crap" and "The game wasn't for me."

When gamespot doesn't receive bribe money, they do an honest review.

So I trust the 4/10 =D

Wow! Thinking back to playing FFVII, VIII, and IX I would never believe a game in this franchise could be bad enough to get a 4/10. I'm a bit of a fanboy for the Playstation days of the series but this just makes me sad!

Why are Square-enix making MMOs when Final Fantasy 7 needs to be milked in their afternoon schedule. (Not be sarcastic but they are making a 3DS FF7 spin-off)

More like there re-releasing a spin-off, but your point stands. and honestly is anyone surprised?

This game was announced like... what last year? it was getting tonns of complaints during the beta that they didnt fix and of course there's what happens in cutscenes compared to what it is to actually play the damn game.

You know what the sad thing is? the director behind this did FFIX, and before that he did XI, so what this is saying to me is THE MAN CAN'T MAKE AN MMO STOP TRYING TO MAKE HIM DO IT!

I mean it shocks no one else that the only good games coming from square are the ones still in development or being developed by people who keep getting there fucking game dates pushed back.

Versus XIII: The Kingdom Hearts team
Agito XIII: Crisis Core (yes it was spin-off milking, but it was FUN spin-off milking)
Dissidia 02
The games that DONT bear the FF name.

Sakaguchi may have driven square to bankruptcy with a movie of stupid proportions but Wada has ruined Squares reputation, he has driven a spike into the heart of the company from which it wont recover.

EDIT: Oh yeah 4 Warriors of Light is awesome as well. By the by is Wada trying to Kill Final Fantasy because it was Dragon Quests biggest competitor way back when he made the same stupid game 7 times?

A friend of mine got it, and sadly it really is a 4/10 game (or less). No joke, what the hell happened at Square Enix?! They're a very huge, very experienced dev company, how on earth could they shit on their biggest franchise with such a crappy game?

What the game truly needs is a tag that says "not for the faint of heart".

While WoW caters to the mass, FFXIV is after its own audience. Is this a million dollar idea? I honestly can't say. But one thing for sure--this is how the game is meant to be.

I point you to The World in .//hack.

Can you notice some similarity?

Yeah..this thing is the Japanese' wet dream of an MMO. And frankly, I really like the idea as well.

Besides, it's the popular thing to bash FF nowadays. Every gaming outlet that bash FF since FF10 had their cred upped by 15 levels. Clearly that little trick is still working.

But G.U. and Link both turned The World into something fun, by speeding it up.

They are not really experienced in the mmo department. Their focus is on story driven experiences tailored to single players, this kind of focus really dosen't help them when they want to deliver the same experience as an mmo. As a result you get the sloppy mess that was FFXIV and no brand name is going to alleviate that. They really should just stick to single player jrpgs and just innovate on what they are good at before making suicidal leaps into the unknown.

While I haven't played the game so I can't really judge the review, what I did find amusing were the user reviews justifying the game to the side of the main review, especially the one starting with "IT TAKES WORK!". I honestly laughed there...

They took Link and GU and westernized them, not improving them.

There's a reason that strategy and turn-based is still an emphasis on this side of the pond, while button mashing action had always been how things are done in the US.

Do you have anything to back any of this up?

Last time I checked...

FFXI has maintained a constant population of about 500k subscribers for the past few years.

There's never been a sudden decline, people haven't suddenly started quitting.

People not being in hub towns?

Uh, yeah, that's how the game works. There's one central town and three outer towns which are mostly occupied by new players. So, no, you won't see many people spending time here when there's a giant main hub of a city which centralizes everything.

Nobody to play with?
Partly true, the population of lower levels has gone down due to current players having levelled passed these staged, but, the level sync updated allowed players of any level to party together, thus this is no longer much of an issue.

"The game wasn't for a lot of people"

It's enough to keep a healthy number of subscribers, a good review score, constant updates and even spawn expansions and if it wasn't for the game, there wouldn't even have been an FFXIV.

A game doesn't need 12 million players to be a success, stop being ridiculous.

Looks pretty, but is mechanically crap and pretty uninteresting. Such is the downfall of the JRPG genre as of late, they even brought this up at a games convention recently iirc. Not. Surprised. One. Freaking. Bit.

Hey, people are.realizing that pointy haired kids swinging physics defying swords in prerendered cutscenes suck! I do like Gamespot reviews over others, i think they are more acurate.
Thats an opinion... >.> People aren't realizing anything, this game sucked becuase they choose a lot of bad desecions, restricting player exp, amount of quests they can do, slow combat...
