What the game truly needs is a tag that says "not for the faint of heart".

While WoW caters to the mass, FFXIV is after its own audience. Is this a million dollar idea? I honestly can't say. But one thing for sure--this is how the game is meant to be.

I point you to The World in .//hack.

Can you notice some similarity?

Yeah..this thing is the Japanese' wet dream of an MMO. And frankly, I really like the idea as well.

Besides, it's the popular thing to bash FF nowadays. Every gaming outlet that bash FF since FF10 had their cred upped by 15 levels. Clearly that little trick is still working.
What audience is that? The audience of people who like unusable laggy interfaces and copy and pasted terrain but hate content and being able to trade without hours of searching? It isn't aiming for some niche audience - it's just broken and unfinished.

And the Japanese don't like it any more than we do - it has almost only 1 star reviews on amazon.co.jp

It's kinda cute how fanboys are trying to defend this crap simple because it's a FF game and therefore can't be crap. There are j/p reviews that were even more harsh giving it a 1/10. SE has been going waaay downhill after FF10, it seems they just threw up their hands and said fck it we're SE we'll get paid either way. I played FF11 for a while but it wasn't great but it wasn't terrible either. once you got used to it and made friends it kept you playing, but FF12 and 13 was terrible, and have you seen those kane and lynch games? wtf SE. it's sad to look at old titles like parasite eve and chrono cross and see what the company has become now. mebbe they should'a stayed has square soft instead of merging.

First and foremost, I NEVER pay attention to metacritic. Metacritic says a lot of shit that turns out to be pretty much dead wrong.
How dense are you? Metacritic posts nothing but facts - scores and links to reviews of other places. It says nothing by itself, it aggregates. It's obvious you do never pay attention to Metacritic though, otherwise you wouldn't be spewing bullshit like that.

Watched the gameplay and commentary by 'Yogscast' and I can honestly say it was one of the most strange and terrifying things I have ever seen. I honestly can't see any appeal with the game whatsoever; The characters looks ridiculous, the setting is stupid, the gameplay boring, and the art design... erm... scary! Very pretty though, I guess I can give it that.

Watch for yourself if you don't believe me.

And yet I'm absolutely certain there will be those who defend the game to the death... Good for them I guess but I just don't understand, I really don't.
How long is that video? After 25 min., I can't stand it anymore. :(
It's 15 parts all of 10-20 minutes. It is hilarious when they start to despair and the guy playing is completely oblivious to what to do, cause the game is just that dense.

Seems an amazingly appalling game.

Gamespot gives AAA games scores lower than an 8? Know this, I did not. /star wars themed sarcasm
Heh. It will be interesting to see which reviewers just slap an 8/10 on any hyped big name franchise no matter how much it sucks and which are honest enough to give FFXIV a score that it's flaws deserve. I'm surprised Gamespot gave an honest review.
This is a long overdue present. I forgive you gamestop. You get the guest room today instead of the floor.:/
Let's just wait for the dishonest review from IGN ;)

I guess this only confirms what many of us were suspecting when FFXIII dropped; Square-Enix no longer has any idea what they're doing, in terms of gameplay. They sure can make some pretty graphics, though.

But G.U. and Link both turned The World into something fun, by speeding it up.
They took Link and GU and westernized them, not improving them.

There's a reason that strategy and turn-based is still an emphasis on this side of the pond, while button mashing action had always been how things are done in the US.
'westernized' really thats what your going with? they removed all the menu traversing which was a huge complaint when they did the online .hack ORPG, if ANYTHING they took more cues from Kingdom Hearts or Devil May Cry.

The fact that .Hack became a better series for it says a lot.

Sounds like a case of putting far too much time and effort into the graphics, and far too little effort into considering the overall game design.

Are you talking about F1 2010 here? :D
Har har har...

F1 2010 has a few issues that'll be fixed up shortly, yeah. But it's still extremely fun and playable. Plus, they didn't even get to finish DX11 in it so you can hardly claim they spent too much time on graphics. I think, overall, F1 was a bit rushed but I've had a very good experience with it so far, no major issues have cropped up.
