They're under pressure from management to push used game sales cause it's a HUGE profit margin for them.
Yeah I can back this one up I actually got denied a job with them even though I could tell her exactly what every off the wall game she threw at me was about and what kind of play style it was but when she heard I buy all games new she said I was not what they were looking for. Before I told her about my buying habits she was thrilled especially when I told her all about Katamari Damacy(it was coming out in a week) and what it was about but once that question about used games came up the interview was over.

Wow, sounds like the people at your Gamestop are dicks. As for me I've only had very positive experiences at my local Gamestop. The people who work there are fellow gamers who are almost suspiciously friendly and eager to offer me information and advice about anything they can.

Reminds of a situation I once had. I went to Gamestop looking for Xbox Originals to play while my 360 was in the shop, so I picked up the first KOTOR, Morrowind, and Scarface: The World is Yours for around $20.00 used. When I got home, Morrowind was slashed across the back of the disk, and Scarface actually had a piece of the disk missing. I took the two back the next day, but was told that even with the receipt, I could another copy of Morrowind, but they could only give me $2.00 for Scarface.

I shop at E.B. Games now.
>>;; I'm pretty sure gamestop owns EB now.
you sir are correct!
but yes the old E.B. games in my town was just bought out by game stop. but the place is the exact same! the same old pricks still work there!

It was the manager.

just to put it out there i work at a gamestop
1. the whole new game thing is that the company sends the store a store lets say 15 games. and the curtain store must "gut" one copy and put it on the "floor". and if there isnt anymore more "wraped copies" you get the last which is the floor copy
no one has played the game.
the gamestop person should have told you this.

2. the game gta. had a wrong sticker. accidents happen, bring it back and fix the problem.

i get complaints all the time about the gamestops in my area and how customers will only go to the one i work at.
if you didnt not enjoy your time on the look on the receipt go to the website featured and give them a bad review tell them your experience was like. they actually do respond to the complaints sent and actions will happen

1. I am well aware that the 'New', unsealed games are, in fact, new. :) It just bugs me to no end, though I did end up buying the last copy of Monopoly this Gamestop has... it was the 'gutted' New one, and I was fine with it... except for the fact that the employee smudged the back of the disc when removing it with their fingers. <<;;

2. Mm, I admit after dealing with the employee as stated, I was just so upset and frustrated that I left then and there without having it taken care of. :/

But on the way home, I stopped by the Gamestop with the awesome employees and talked to them about what happened, and they refunded me the additional price that they agreed I shouldn't of had to pay. :)

Also, to the person who mentioned that I was at fault for the case thing - Yeah, I know. But it's not so much that as the fact that they pulled that sort of move without even informing me, since I know it isn't 'common' for them to switch cases and crap.

As it is, I DID end up getting my original case back (Via telling them that I would, at least, like to get the display case/manual/poster that I originally brought up to purchase. <<; )

1) I have dealt with countless Gamestop employees and a few Gamestop managers (the author of the "28 Confessions" or whatever it was called also confirmed this) that say that, while employees are "advised" to take home a used copy of the game to play with, they can take the gutted one as well as long as they're careful.

To put it in layman's terms, I have it on good authority from several people who work at Gamestops all across the country that Gamestop sells games which are opened and have been played before as "new".

2) Mistakes do happen. Switching the good copy for the shit copy and bumping up the price without saying anything is not a "mistake". Much like selling used games as new, this practice is what we in the real world call deception.

I went into Gamestop after my mom had got me a PS2 for Christmas. The Playstation didn't play older games or some of my DVDs, but the controller was perfect except for a missing tab on the right analog stick, which wasn't even a problem. I took it back, paid for the little warrenty on the new one they gave me to replace the one I got, bought a new copy of MK Armaegeddon to replace my old one my brother Haven ruined, along with some other stuff, and was on my merry little way. I got back to the car, and my stepdad suggested that I open the box to check if they had screwed me over. Of course they had. They gave me an old PSone controller with my PS2.................I'm trying to take it back and get a refund. Does anyone know if they give refunds?

Either way I'm still pissed.

You should watch Zero Originality. It's a series made in the style of Zero Punctuation, except instead of reviewing games, the guy just bashes Gamestop.
Main reason I stopped going there

I would just get louder and make more trouble for the employees. You're not their friends, you are a customer. The customer is always right! ... especially when someone steals money out of your pocket, claiming the game is more expensive than it is (paying 6.99 for a 4.99 game is very foolish.) So I recommend showing some backbone and asking for the manager if they keep being idiots. If the manager comes out and gives you the same treatment then call a corporate branch and give them the story. Then maybe you can get some decent service.

My local gamestop is actually near perfect, except for the manager. He is a crotchety old fart who knows nothing about what he;s selling, and then gets angry when a question is asked. I normally only go there if there is one employee working who I either know personally, or if there is the trademark "actual gamer working at a videogame store" employee.

I NEVER buy used games though for fear of what the original owner might have done.

GameStop is one massive bloated company full of heretic managers. They bought up my favorite store in this mall in Sandnes (that's a place south of my town) and they even had one guy desert their ranks to blow the whistle on them (Google "Zero Originality" or "GameStop whistleblower"). That's how big idiots they are.

Zero Originality is awesome.

I am so glad I was told about it.

Yeeeah, I think I'll stick with eBay as I have been as of late, though sometimes it IS cheaper to buy a game thru Gamestop versus that... but that's rare and far in between, so.

I went and found the Zero Originality videos. I thought I would post the links here because no one else did. Usually, I'm a lazy forum reader who can't be arsed to Google something if there isn't a provided link. It's all pretty shocking hearing about some of the stuff they pull, especially the wage cards.

I did not know that they were rated on how many used games they sold, still it's pretty rude for the company to do something like this.

I have a younger looking face than I should, so when I reached for a copy of Mass Effect, he asked if my mother new I bought porno while underage.

I already HAVE Mass Effect, I just wanted to see the price. I nearly broke the box over his head.

here's a bit of ethics irony for you.
EB Games and Gamestop are owned by the same company. in a 2007 study by the entertainment services rating board (ESRB), to determine which stores were the worst offenders for selling M and AO rated games to minors. gamestop was the worst, with 85% of minors successfully able to purchase M or AO rated games. EB Games was the best, with only 5% being successful.
