Instead the guy that wrote Father Ted just said "games are like movies, not like books." Insightful.
That's not very fair to 'the irish guy', he was making a point that games are developing at a rapid pace in every aspect except in the story telling department. If you look at gaming in general you have to agree, take out the odd gem Bioshock as you mentioned or HL perhaps and we are left with so many games that do take their sole influence from movies. As a consequence we are left with man takes on the world generic plot lines with poor character development and more cliches thrown in than you know what to do with. A fair point I think, the games industry could do with some better writers.
Well yes, if you look at gaming as a whole then the ones with good stories will be in the minority... But that's the case with any medium. Gears of War is the video game equivalent of a summer blockbuster. The emphasis is on the action - not the story. It's like saying Transformers is a poorly written film and then concluding that NO films are well written. I think he should have at least mentioned some games that have told a good story in a unique way.
Yea, I take your point, it would have been nice if a few games with unique and well told stories were mentioned. Although to come full circle in a way, its interesting to note that games with well told and interesting stories often take inspiration from books whereas games like gears are influenced by the last summer blockbuster. If games writers spent more time reading and less time watching Transformers we might all benefit, maybe.

It was great, especially the constant references to imaginary games and the part where he takes the piss out of 50 Cent.

Yup, for the next six weeks it's required viewing for our class. It was good. Very, very good.
It was a one off special you know? Like the American Screenwipe special.
Lalala, I can't hear you, I'm not listening...

I find it kinda interesting that you guys are pissed about that - my thought was that the game he chose as an example, Vice City, was meant to feel like someone had watched Scarface 20 times and had almost no other frame of reference other than "it was like that in the 80's. I seem to remember". At least, that's what I understood anyway.

Superb, Brooker never fails to dissappoint. All it needed was a five minute review from Yahtzee and we would have reached TV Nirvana.

Wait... so you didn't like it? Or you did, I don't understand those contradictory sentances.

I laughed out loud quite a few times through it, thought it was pretty funny, but I just love hearing British people talk and British humour.

Almost like it was a game show for people who don't know a lot about games except the only people who'll watch the show are people who know about them already.
That's exactly what it was! It was a good insight into the history of gaming and how far it's come. You have to remember that a lot his audience is made up of people who like Charlie Brooker and they'll watch it for him, not because it's about gaming.

Also, he didn't do a good job of defending gaming from how the media portrays them. He says games aren't all about violence and then shows loads of shots of chopping limbs off Nazi's.
It's not his job to defend gaming! He's a journalist, he's just reporting what he sees.

Another thing that annoyed me was that little bit about stories in video games. There are more to game stories than Gears of War. They didn't even mention games that tell stories in amazing ways like Bioshock...
The thing is, most films have good stories, whereas only a few games bother to put the time in. Brooker and his guests were trying to explain what was wrong with the approach of MOST games when it comes to storytelling because it is a problem. It's only a short show, I'm sure if there are more episodes he will touch on better games.

that's been out aaaaages. tis nothing compared to screenwipe and newswipe. I guess that's because they only get one episode for gameswipe (as it was just a special) so they had to condense it a lot. it's not as good as yahtzee because brooker presents it from a noob perspective (so basically assuming the audience to have no prior knowledge of video games) and of course yahtzee can devote a whole roughly five minute slot to ONE GAME.

edit: lol, just realised how old this thread is, facepalm.

For once thread necromancy does something good. I've never seen this show and I'm quite pleasantly suprised. I'd reccomend this to both gamers and non-gamers alike since it talks about the medium in an accessible way.
