Gaming Advice: My Xbox Red Ringed, now what?

Hi all, I'm looking for some gaming advice.

I've had my Xbox 360 for years and years...and it never gave me any trouble. I haven't been able to play for about a month (the semester has been hard). Today I thought I'd fire up my Xbox and play some more LA Noire. But there was that dashboard update. So I downloaded the update...and then my Xbox Red-ringed.

So I called Microsoft, we tried to figure it out. They said--"Red Ring is a hardware issue so the update must have been a coincidence. Your 360 is out of warrantee. So you have a choice: pay for a repair or buy a new 360."

So what do I do:
a) Buy a new 360
b) Wait for the Xbox 720 to come out and hope it is backwards compatible.

Note: I am not going to buy a PS3. I have about 50 Xbox games I haven't played yet and when I get a new console it will be something that will let me play those games. The PS3 won't let me do that.

So, Xboxers...advice?

go on google and try the "towel trick" it really does work. i had the red ring of death on my old xbox and when i tried the towel trick it fixed it for about 6 months. when i got the red ring of death again i just bought the new slimline xbox. if it works like this for u,it could last till the 720 comes out. might save u some monies =)

I'd day get a new one. There are some great Christmas deals going about at the moment. Strike while the iron is hot.

It might be a good idea to try and fix the xbox yourself, since it's out of warranty.

It's honestly pretty easy, and there are tons of tutorials on youtube for how to do it. You just need some tools that pretty much everyone owns, and some arctic silver thermal compound which you can buy for between $5 and $10 online (much cheaper than the $100 MS charges you for a repair).

Remember, even if you royally fuck up the repair, you can always send it into Microsoft as a plan B and they'll still charge you the same $100 they would have charged you originally, so the worst that will happen is you're out and extra $10.

Either get Microsoft to repair it, try find a super cheap one on ebay (maybe one that only comes with the xbox itself?), purchase a new one or wait it out till the next xbox. You're unlucky that it broke this close to when the consoles will be switching generations. The towel trick is a terrible way to get it working again, as it just generally fucks it up again in a couple of days to weeks. I would advise you to simply get Microsoft to repair it.
