So I was recently talking to someone on a different gaming forum (why I don't know. I was bored) and we started to discuss games that every gamer should play or at least try.

We went through the obvious ones like Zelda, Metroid and Donkey Kong all that fun stuff and it got down to the Half Life series and this is were the argument ensued.

I told him that I never got into the Half Life series and called them boring and uninteresting to me.

To which he replied:

BLASPHEMY!!! HALF LIFE IS THE GREATEST SERIES EVER AND IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT YOU CAN'T CONSIDER YOURSELF A GAMER!!!11!! ITS A SIN NOT TO LIKE IT!!!
Yes, that was an actual copy/paste. He used all caps.

Now, I pretty much left the conversation there since I try to avoid internet fanboys who use all caps like that, but that got me thinking, doesn't everyone do that to some degree? Some sort of gaming "sin" if you will.

So I'd like to know, what gaming "sin" (as the above person calls it) have you committed?

Or, what are some that you know others have done?

Be it a gaming rule, a certain famous franchise you don't like or whatever, what is it?

As for me, I obviously don't like Half Life, but I also hated Final Fantasy 7, Fallout 3 didn't really impress me and I prefer the 3D Castlevanias to the 2D ones.

Movie-based games are never good.
Mario is a constant.
Link is a constant.
Samus is a constant.
Duke Nukem Forever will be the greatest game ever.

500 posts strong.

I also wasn't blown over by half life (perhaps due to not playing it when it first came out). I say i appreciate what it's done for the industry but in honesty I don't really mean it. Half life for me would just by that okish game which allowed for Counter Strike to exist, which was the first online shooter i ever played and one of my favorites. Ahh fond memories... Arrrgh memories of the Awp...

...You realize he was joking right? He wouldn't have put all those 1s in with those !s at the end of "gamer" if he was serious.
OT:...Not playing games? There's no rules to enjoying something unless it's illegal.

I use flashbangs in counterstrike, I also camp, but those are legitamite strategies and so far the only people that disagree are immature 12 year old punks.

No, he was serious.

I could tell he was being dead serious because he went on forever about it.

You mean is!

Seriously though, what makes a gamer is enjoying games, nothing more. There's just different ways people go about doing that.

Well, I thought Bioshock was pretty boring and just not that great overall, is that a 'gaming sin'?
No it is not. Like many games, it's one sold on pretenses.

Me? I have a black list of games I have deemed to never play. The Halo and Bioshock series make it, as well as Dante's Inferno. I'm sure there are many others, those are just the most prevalent for the time.

I've criticised Half-Life 2 in the past, mainly for the blatantly-contrived puzzles, far-too-long vehicle sections and my dislike of Alyx.

I do believe his reply was sarcastic.

My sin would be I refuse to play Modern Warfare 2. Not because it is so popular, but because I believe games need strong single player before being carried by multiplayer. So I won't even give it the time of day to test it since I hear it has a five hour campaign then you grind online play forever.

This goes for all multiplayer requirement games.

So I judge games before I play them if I hear they have no single player or a extremely short one.

So...
You played BioShock and decided to never play again...
Or you refused to play it ever at all?

I mean, its not as good as everyone says, but don't cut yourself out of experiencing it if you haven't.

EDIT:
Absolute gamer law: You are not a true hardcore RPG fan unless you've playe Mother 3 from beginning to end.

I didn't like Half-Life 2.

I'm not a massive fan of Bioshock.

Fallout 3, while interesting and enjoyable when I'm playing it, has never left a lasting impression on me.

I like Tomb Raider, and actually prefer her rebooted games in a lot of ways.

I like Final Fantasy VII, VIII and IX, and even enjoy quite a bit of the VII EU, though not nearly as much as the original.

I like Halo, which either means I'm the gaming master race, or one of those strange slimy creatures other gamers crush beneath their feet.

There are others.

I don't like either the Metal Gear Solid series nor any of the recent Final Fantasy games.

Yes, call me a heretic, I don't mind. I could like a dozen reasons easily off the top of my head why I find myself disliking both series, but that would be flame-baiting so I'll resist. Either way I just don't like em and sometimes wonder how anyone could, I just don't get it!

I have never played any of them, I have never even held the box for any of them.

As long as you've tried the game, and empirically found you did or did not like it, then your opinion is valid. Disregarding a game without first hand evidence is just stupidity.

I have to disagree. I completely disregard Fable 3, and I have not nor will I ever play it. Stupid Peter Molyneux.

My blasphemous gaming ways ... I think it's more agnostic really ... I never play MMOs that require a subscription fee [meaning no wow] and end up quitting them fairly early on. I hated Killzone 2. I strongly disliked Resistance 2, never played the first. I have never played Half Life and thought Half Life 2 was Waaaaaaaaaay too freaking long. I hate the Grand Turismo racing series. There isn't a single game in that series I can stand. Is it blasphemous to import games? Because I imported Soul Silver ... perhaps it's blasphemous that I am helping Pokemon stay alive ... but I love Pokemon. That's about all I've got at the moment.
