INVISIBLE. F'ING. WALLS.

Also, lateral-thinking solutions to crucial game problems. I don't want to be hampered from continuing my quest into Bjorgentown because I have to take this fish to the girl over in Hoobstinville without even being told that it's possible to fish in the game.

Metal Gear Solid comes very close to breaking this cardinal rule but they save themselves by (eventually) telling you where to find Meryl's frequency, or how to get around Psycho Mantis.

Clunky character controls.

Edit: Ninja'd

Games that play great but become glitchy when a certain action happens.

This one leaves the game still playable, but it is so frequent that it deserves mention:
Neglecting local play for online.

stupid dialogue. this isn't a cardinal sin, but it pisses me off. I was playing SC2, i just recovered some adjutant thing, and the gameplay fades away and is replaced by the bridge of the hyperion, and the line "the adjutant is in the lab" then, fade away to Jimmy in the lab. Totally pointless bit right there.

Point and Click adventure games are a sin in themselves.

(Not point and click RPGs! Diablo II is great!)

Poor sound/music quality kills it for me. It's often overlooked but it really drives down the experience I think if it has a crappy soundtrack and sound effects.

This being the Escapist, I'm surprised no one said this, so I'm going to.
