Hiranobu sakaguchi and Yoshitaka Amano pop into my mind along with Nobuo Uematsu, who I find to be the Mozart of game music. Hideo Kojima is hard to miss unless you been living under a rock for the past decade and have the nerve to call yourself a gamer. Shagiro Miyamoto is the Walt Disney of gaming, it's almost impossible not to acknowledge him.

Shagiro Miyamota is the fucking godfather of gaming. Some idiot said that he made terrible games. I looked at him funny and said, "..."

The "problem" with Gaming Celebrities is that they are just names (often) without faces, and therefore can't possibly be recognized by any sort of "boulevard" press.
... and this is where I'd like to bring up an exception to the "often". There are the occasional gaming celebrities that do have a face with a name. Felecia Day is a prime example. She both writes and stars in "The Guild", a web-series on YouTube about gamers. In addition to that, she is a very avid gamer, and she isn't afraid to prove it.

Sure, it isn't the best example, but at least its a start. After all, as its been pointed out, most of the "celebrities" in our world are rarely seen developers or, in some cases, merely gamer tags spread around with infamy. Its altogether pointless to look at the mainstream press to see who is prominent in the gaming world in the first place. You have to look at websites like The Excapist, magazines like PCGamer, places like PAX, places that actually care about us.

I will go ahead and say Olivia Munn, I wouldn't necessarily say she is a gamer, but she works on a gaming channel, and is crazy hot. This is really not a place for celebrities, more of a place for nerds (and i use the term loosely) to dress up in fun attire and strut around conventions.

"Corpsegrinder" the lead singer of Cannibal Corpse plays WoW, youtube him talking about it, lol.

I actually played Turok with the guys from Disturbed, that was pretty amazing.

On another note, Slash and Tom were actually in a game, do they count?

Yahtzee, Adam Sezzler, Morgan Webb (because she's the token hot chick okay!?), Lord British Richard Garriot or whatever his name is this week, Steven Colbert (D&D nerd for the win), Shigeru Miyamoto, Hideo Kojima, Jack Thompson (admit it, videogames made him kind of famous. For being a duschbag), The Penny Arcade guys.

Mollineux, Moore, Schaefer... maybe Frankie O'Connor too though he's been out of the limelight for a while.

The king of kong movie/cinemized documentry is surprisingly well known. It recieved very good reviews from the film press so, as a result of that, I'd say Steve Weibbe and all could be considered gaming celebrities.
