Gaming, or anything for that matter, is childish if you approach it without restraint or standards.

Nothing is inherently childish, even playing with building blocks is an "adult" activity if those blocks create a sculpture, or become a wall. The same applies to games, if you approach games (video or not) the same way a child would, IE: without limiting the time you spend, or using it for a purpose such as a stress outlet, social tool, exercise, or for relaxation, and instead are playing for the sake of playing to waste time, or "because you have nothing better to do", then one might say that you, are indeed, childish.

I know it sounds dumb to say "gaming is serious stuff" but it has its uses and purposes just like any activity, and just like any activity it can become "childish" in the wrong hands.

Dunno...gears is pretty childish in it's need to be gory and in it's low level of competence in the story department.

Though not all games are like it, tell someone to play something like persona 4 and then they'll soon change their mind.

Actually you may notice that I wrote the word "play" after the word (well number really) "360".

When someone does not specify which word they are referring to they are generally talking about the last one (as opposed to a random one which would make it sound funny).

Back on topic, if games aren't toys then what are they?
I guess somewhat fit the description of toys, eventhough you don't directly play with the disc. However, toys are usually tied to LEGO, Playmobil and such. That doesn't really fit the image of games like.. say.. Gears Of War.

Well...

We are a young medium.

We don't have our Citizen Kane.
We don't have our Gone With the Wind.

We're just recently starting to break into the kind of medium for art that film and literature is with games like Bioshock.

Time can destroy even the mightiest barricades.

I have never meet or seen a person who thinks that games are childish.
So I guess that I'm lucky on this one. :)

Because in the early day of games, they were seen more as toys than being more than that. That stigma still holds.
But are games not toys?
I don't know, do you sit around having tea parties with them or make them fight ninja's with your G.I. Joes?
Nope, I pop them in the 360 and have play them. Just like I used to do with other kinds of toys when I was younger.
You put your toys in a 360 when you were younger? How old are you?

GASP! You have a time machine!?!

Nope. in the same way that books and films aren't. games are culture.

We just have to wait till all the older generations die off until they are accepted. :D

times have changed alot since it was onl kids playing games, i.e the 18 plus ones, which i belive every parent should not let they kids play till they reach the age on the game, (this is how i d it with my 2 kids)

but everyone and anyone from about 12 upwards plays games now, ive read of fully grown men pulling sickies from work when a new game comes out

yeah, they are toys, but they have evolved beyond that. they are becoming much, much more. for the final ________ has only. just. begun.

Cookies for the reference.
Thank you for your sort of half agreement. That wasn't sarcastic.

Neither was that.

People think video games are childish for the same reason they think comics, anime, toy collections, model building, and role-playing is childish. It's a nerdy niche-market. Just because they don't understand how deep games can really be doesn't mean you have to get all offended about it. :p
