Why, oh why do non gamers think that video games are childish?

It really grinds my gears. I'm fed up explaining to people that games like Gears, Dead Rising etc are NOT made for kids (although the little shits play them)!

Ignorance is a fascinating thing. Those people, they are ignorant. Not WILLFULLY ignorant mind you, but ignorant about the subject nonetheless. If they want to learn more about gaming, more power to them. But if they want to keep living the fantasy that Videogames are childish, then let them as well. It all comes down to this: Do you think gaming is childish? No? Then don't care about what anyone else thinks.

Because in the early day of games, they were seen more as toys than being more than that. That stigma still holds.
But are games not toys?

I think that its because it seems that the gaming market's biggest front is of the little twerps who manage to badger their parent to waste all their money on games that they either spend 24/7 playing or play once, cry when they suck at it then throw it away.

True! But, with Games out selling DVD and CDs every year since 2006, you would think that people would recognise Gaming as a hobby all ages can enjoy!

The only people who say this are old non-gamers. They still think we play pacman and supermario on the NES. They are also wrong.

Well, gaming isn't childish simply because so many games being made today aren't even for children. It looks like you already know the easiest and most effective rebuttal against this misconception. Next time, just save time by telling people that "The existence of M-rated games means gaming isn't only for kids". Quick sentence. Works every time, and makes the other person feel stupid.

Because it's easier to censor what other adults are watching/playing if you can say "it's harming the children". That's much easier to pull off than, i know what's best for you and my opinions are more important than yours.

People who don'e play games tend to think of them as many things. The ones who think they are childish are probably only aquainted with children who play games. There are people, as I am sure you are aware, that call video games too violent, and they don't want them to "infect the minds of the young." Too late for that, don't ya think?
It's really all about who you talk to, and if they actually know what goes into a game, or what the final products generally are.

everyone assumes that we are still playing pokemon games. nothing wrong with that though. But because of that series many believe it is childish to play games. Personally i would like to sit these people down and play Mad world or God Of war 3 in front of them and then ask if gaming is childish

Yup. Nintendo are to blame for that when they revived the flagging games industry in the 80s, marketing the NES to toy stores and convincing everyone that it was for kids. It's their fault more than anyone else's.

Well, apart from the media, of course.
