To be honest I don't think the focus is mainly on FPS - Look at the big ones of recent times, GTA, Manhunt, Bully, RE5 none of those games were FPS'.

Big people sending lowr-class soldiers to their demise for stupid objectives in a completely asinine strategy is the bread and butter of most militaries today. So, saying those are bad is like saying the military sucks.
Also, FPS games are more realistic, with the view being from someone holding a gun.

They only focus on FPS's because you're seeing the death up close. They don't care for the thousands of little sprites that you sacrifice to take over a fort, and you're not the one who's holding the guns (you're just the big guy sending them to be slaughtered)
Yes I agree with you

Because FPS's dominate the mainstream market, and anyone who complains about videogames (Most news networks.) Usually only look for what is in the "Child Corrupting" spotlight at the time. IE Manhunt, Halo, and the eventual Fox News/CNN or whoever report about Modern Warfare 2 "Supporting Terrorism."

I find it interesting that anti-gaming people always focus on how FPSs are corrupting people. I find it interesting because when I look at strategy games I generally see far more death, mayhem and immorality. One can easily kill more people in 5 minutes of Total War or Civilization than you could in days of playing GTA.

I say this not to say I agree with the radical anti-gaming nut-job crowd but to get your views.

what do you think?
To be honest, that's the same attitude people apply to real life, and that really irks me. For some reason, an 'enemy combatant' who shoots nine people is considered more evil than a General who orders airstrikes that kill tens of thousands over the course of a war.

Let us quote Iosif Vissarnovich Stalin: "The death of one man is tragic. The death of millions is statistics."
Also, the anti-gaming people rarely know about RTS games.

"We train young men to drop fire on people. But their commanders won't allow them to write "fuck" on their airplanes because it's obscene!" - Colonel Walter E. Kurtz (Apocalypse Now: Redux)

Edit: I love how they rip apart games for promoting violence, but have nothing to say when a soldier is awarded for killing.

There all just 1s and 0s why does it matter when you think about it. I think it may have to do with the fact that strategy games are essentially chess with more realistic pieces. That's all it is really.

I can't stand that word, "controversy". I always see it used by people who don't know the facts about a game and assume it's bad.

See Fox New's report on "Mass Effect."

All I'm saying is that if you follow their logic that and they're concerned that FPSs desensitize one to murder, shouldn't they be more concerned about desensitization to mass murder?

eg. There's a button in Europa Universalis marked "Slaughter Natives" and it's a useful button but I can't help feeling evil for pressing it.

I think a Baptist or Catholic would be a little more opposed to that scenario ;)

It's all about the players perspective, really all the argument boils down to.
