It's been coming, it's been known for a bit, but still... it has happened, John Bain aka TotalBiscuit has passed away from cancer today.

Please try to keep shittalking about his controversial opinions to a minimum if possible in here.

That's really unfortunate. I always hoped he'd pull through because he was so young.

I really liked the guy. Didn't always watch his videos, or agree with all his views, but I really do think that he had a positive impact on gaming, and I believe that his criticism was a major part of why PC gaming has had such a resurgence in recent years.

I hate to say I'm not surprised, because his health always seemed to be declining, but I am truly upset to hear of TotalBiscuit's passing.

When I first got into the PC gaming scene, he was one of the first people I found to help me get into it. He didn't do much on the hardware side that I knew of, but if there was a game coming out on PC he was the first person I expected to see something from.

He inspired me to look at games differently, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse, but ultimately more critically. To say he simply influenced the way I reviewed games would be an understatement.

It seems silly to say I had the dream of meeting him someday. Maybe at a convention. Just a hello would have sufficed. To find out I won't have that opportunity saddens me.

He'll live on sure enough though, at least in my mind. Rest in Peace, sir.

I had the hope he'd still pull through for another year or two, considering how young he was. Damn this news feels way too sudden for me. The man was a dick, but in my opinion in a good way. He didn't take shit from anyone and told it how he saw it was. Combine that with his drive to always be professional and detailed in his videos, and I developed quite a bit of respect for the man.

The industry will surely be worse off without him, I think. Let's hope there will be others that can take his place. As in, not just his type of videos but also the influence he had on the industry.

I'm surprised he lasted this long, actually. It sounded like he was completely gone and done when he first got diagnosed.

RIP. The guy definitely had a positive effect on the gaming medium. I can't believe he died at just 33 years old... Such a damn waste. I wish his family the best.

State of mind has a significant effect on how long one lasts, and after seeing the numbers he realised that if he got through the first six months he'd last much longer, since casualties tend to be a bit of a half life for what he had. Sad he passed away, but he got more time then most in his condition, and he certainly seems to have made the most of it.

I posted the thread a couple weeks ago about his announcement of retirement. Even though things looked grim from that post, I didn't think he would be gone so quickly afterwards. I really didn't. Maybe a few months, one last christmas or thanksgiving.

I saw the news late and I just don't know how to feel. No matter how long you expect this kind of thing, it still feels like a punch in the gut that brings tears to your eyes.

I didn't always agree with him, and definitely didn't like his social politics most of the time...but I did love everything he said about video games. Even when he shit on a game I loved, I liked the way he was always able to provide very good reasoning behind dislike-like of everything.

Fortunately for us, he has left behind thousands of hours worth of entertainment, which I will be rewatching as much as possible to try and provide more support.

RIP John, you were an asshole, but you were OUR asshole.

He beats cancer and was 100% cancer free, and then suddenly it comes back and now this? Honestly that is just messed up.

You were my favorite gaming gaming critic for many many years, and your Co-Optional podcasts were an absolute joy. I spent too much time watching your videos, and enjoyed every minute of it.

Rest in peace.

Happens more often then you think, honestly. Just because the caner goes away for a while, doesn't mean it is gone forever.

That really sucks.

The guy was an inspiration in the gaming community, a consumer advocate, and a pretty classy guy all around. I am sorry to hear he passed, especially since he beat the cancer for a good while there. I didn't always agree with him, but he was certainly deserving of respect for what he accomplished.

It is a shame I keep seeing people who disagreed with him for things like siding with gamergate going out of their way to try to shit on him.

Sad to hear he's gone. He was an important voice in gaming, even if I didn't always agree with him. I wish his family all the best.

What Breakfastman said. While some cancers can be cured, it still really hard to get rid of entirely and equally hard to confirm that it actually is fully gone. That's why doctors say the cancer is 'in remission' rather than saying it's cured. It's possible for some remaining microscopic cancer cells to go unnoticed for years after treatment. And that can be all it takes. When a cancer starts spreading again after being in remission, it is called a 'recurrence'.

I'm guessing that's what happened in TotalBiscuits case.

That's sad, that genuinely brought a bit of a year to my eye. It wasn't unexpected but it still catches me a bit. TB was my introduction to gaming content and kind of YouTube in general and the TGS/cooptional podcast was always a full watch every week until relatively recently.
My sympathies to his family be friends.
