Fast forward to the year 2012, an event has changed gaming whether it's that year specifically or forever the medium has been damaged or bettered in some way, basically predict a happening in 2012 that would piss off or completely take gamers by surprise.
Mass Effect 3 wasn't the end! Mass Effect 4!

*reads rest of OP*

Probability 2, Impact 20 btw... And that's it.

Electronic Arts open a convenience store to poor reviews. Bread dough is full price, a half-plucked chicken is slightly expensive and instead of beer you get a 'Make Your Own Beer' kit, also overpriced.

Probability: Don't be too sure.

Impact: We wait for Valve to do the same thing only better.

Half-Life 2: Episode 3 is released. It's actually terrible, and doesn't have any crowbar.
Also, the voice of Morgan Freeman will be provided by Will Ferrell.
...Or the voice of Gordon Freeman is provided by Morgan Freeman. :p

Shenmue 3 comes out, following an HD re-release of Shenmues 1 and 2 on PSN/XBLA.

Probability: LOL
Impact: Comes out, fanboys find a way to ***** after years of begging, the world keeps spinning.

Square Enix releases Final Fantasy XV and it changes the way RPGs are played with better scripts than Bioware or Bethesda RPGs. It has free roam and fast paced action gameplay with no turn-based elements. Materia is reintroduced and the game has better graphics than real life.

Probability (1 be high, 10 being low like OP said): 10
Hell will have frozen over, probably twice.

Impact: 8

Non-Squeenix fans will actually like Final Fantasy and long time Squeenix fans will finally be proud of their favorite series once again!

New engines similar to the Unreal Engine but for different genres are released, and all of these base engines have a wide variety of shaders allowing for games from Gears of War grey to Katamari-esque colours. The Unreal Engine receives this update as well.

Probability: 3/10 This could happen in smaller doses or individual steps, and is somewhat feasible.

Impact: 8/10 A greater variety of games with more accessible colours can be easily afforded by the AAA studios, allowing for a greater variety of games.

Problem: Temptation to use base engines would likely stifle creativity and exploration into new genres.

Square Enix announce remake of FFVII for PS3.

Probability: 3 (someone may finally see good business sense)
Impact: 8. Fans flock in droves to buy the game. Square learn the valuable lesson of never under-estimating their fanbase.

All devs and publishers resolve any differences they've ever had, and decide to pool all their successful ideas into the single best game ever made, combining elements of every genre seamlessly with fantastic story and brilliant gameplay. It even manages to mix linear and openworld gameplay and finally manages to combine single and multiplayer in such ways that it has all the strengths and none of the weaknesses. A diverse and constantly evolving story that changes based on your every move gives it infinite replay value. It is released cross platform and ported in such a way that each version is slightly different to play to the strengths of the platform so that no one feels cheated.

Probability: Not a chance in hell

Impact: 10. There would be a huge inflation of the industry, followed by it's collapse as people refuse to buy anything else until they have seen all the endings.

Valve and Nintendo agree on a collaboration game and bring Steam to Project Cafe.
Probability: 1. Unless Sony and Valve have a serious falling out and the stars align at one E3, this will never happen.
Impact: 10. This could probably bring about a fucking golden age...

Episode 3 will not live up expectations.
Probability: 9.
Impact: 0. Valve fanboys have built this up as gaming's second coming of Christ, and it's for an episodic game for a franchise that has been out of commission since the Orange Box. Tech has changed, and so has Valve. It won't be what they were expecting. But it'll still be good, and it'll still sell well.

Nintendo not only re-releases Earthbound, but also translates Mother 3 in a single 3DS cartridge.
Probability: 2.
Impact: 8. Fans have been waiting a LOOOOONG time for both of these. They haven't even put Earthbound on the Virtual Console on the Wii Shop Channel. Both happening at once would not only be near impossible, but very well received.

Square Enix finally realizes that FF 14 is a lost cause, abandons it, and gets around to making Kingdom Hearts 3.

Probability 3 (If we see Kingdom Hearts 3 BEFORE 2013, I'll frankly be shocked)

Impact 5 (Square fans will be both incredibly infuriated that FF 14 will always be shit, but at the same time, jump for joy that Kingdom Hearts 3 is finally coming out. Everyone else won't give a shit)
