Looking in the opposite direction, if you have a job doing something you love, you never work a day in your life.
Isn't everything we do a waste of time technically? Hell, as long as games are fun, I'll keep playing them.

Recreation is just as important for society as work, as it relieves stress and helps people be happy. Additionally, some video games literally do benefit society in very potent ways.

Besides, 'productive' is just a word for 'doing something that'll result in something good/fun down the line'. It's a bit of a simplification, but 'productive' = 'fun later' while 'waste of time' = 'fun now'. Don't underestimate the latter, there's nothing wrong with it
Well I wouldn't describe it as "escaping life," as there is plenty of fun to be had in the "real world," I thought the whole point of playing games was a way to enjoy yourself without dealing with the shit we put up with on a regular basis. I know I would be a helluva lot more depressed if I was focusing on existentialism instead of having a *fun* way to spend my excess time.A big red rooster said:

But gaming offers experiences, and not just surrogate experiences. The moments and thrills you share with your friends while gaming might have never been if you weren't wasting your time with video games.
