I dont know why everyone seems to think gaming is a life style. Video games are nothing more then something to have fun with and blow time on. People dont (and never did) consider watchng T.V. as a lifestyle so why do gamers?

"Lifestyle" is just a word used to find others with similar interests, therefore anything can be a lifestyle.

It's considered a 'lifestyle' moreso than TV because it involves participation. When it comes to TV and movies, the most you do is switch between shows.

The difference being, TV shows don't form communities around-
Oh wait. Hm...

I guess you could say you have a point. The one bit of entitlement we feel is that we're actively involved in something through game controllers (even if we're not vocal) rather than a TV critique, who would do nothing more than sit on his couch all day.

It can be in certain cases. If you work at a game store, are a journalist/reviewer, or a designer then yes, it is a lifestyle. In every other case it is a hobby. I don't know how that belief cropped up.

EDIT: My definition of lifestyle is more around-the-clock involvement than just a person's main hobby.

EDIT 2: You know what? Fuck it. It can be one. My mind is arguing with itself again.

Wouldn't it be so for people who spend the majority of their time making games then playing them on their time off?

Obvious troll is obvious.

OT - I feel like gaming on its own isn't so much a lifestyle, whereas joining a community of gamers, modders, programmers, etc. is. You can't really say a whole lot about the average TV show beyond, "That was a funny joke, that one missed the mark." In some cases (Walking Dead, Freaks and Geeks) you get more than that, but not enough to sustain a conversation for more than an hour, at most. Movies, though... Society seems to accept movie-going as a lifestyle, so why not gaming? I hope my rambling has answered your question. =)

Well let's take a look at this, I wonder myself.

*does a little research on Wikipedia*

A set of behaviors, and the senses of self and belonging which these behaviors represent, are collectively used to define a given lifestyle. The term is defined more broadly when used in politics, marketing, and publishing.

A lifestyle is a characteristic bundle of behaviors that makes sense to both others and oneself in a given time and place, including social relations, consumption, entertainment, and dress. The behaviors and practices within lifestyles are a mixture of habits, conventional ways of doing things, and reasoned actions.

****

Well if gaming actually affects your behavior, such as your social interactions or dress, seems to me it can be a Lifestyle. For many people it is. I wear gmaing T-Shirts. I go to game clubs and gaming expos, and I made most of my friends through gaming. I'd very much call it a lifestyle.

Though I'd really classify it as part of the "nerd/fanboy" lifestyle, but it's certainly there.

Also, as part of that

". Some commentators argue that, in modernity, the cornerstone of lifestyle construction is consumption behavior, which offers the possibility to create and further individualize the self with different products or services that signal different ways of life."

IF this is the case, if what you consume is gaming related, that in will of course have an impact on your lifestyle.

So Video games are a life style, people who play video games call themselves gamers and form a community around gaming.

EDIT: GOD DAMN IT NINJA"D AGAIN!

In before a bunch of raging extra credits fans kick your door down and zombify you.

I tend to agree, but that's just because of how I define the word "lifestyle". It's not *just* what you do in your spare time, or in some cases do in your not-spare time. "Gamers" don't eat or dress or walk or speak differently from people who don't. Nor are they identifiable to people who are not just by appearance outside of wearing something plainly obvious. Makes it a bit difficult for me to even consider the idea.

Someone who sees sports fans living a "lifestyle" based off the team wouldn't really have trouble seeing "gaming" as one. I disagree, but it's just a matter of how you define the word.

It's pretty easy to make overly simplified general statements like that.
Video games are nothing more then something to have fun with and blow time on.
You know how many things you could apply that to? Did you say almost, if not, everything? Cuz that'd be correct.

But instead of making comparison between video games and some other activities that aren't watching TV, I think I'll make a different point:

It's a life-style because we make it one.

Edit: I'd also like to point out that this is a good post even though I don't quite agree with it:

Ofcourse it's a lifestyle, whenever one devotes himself to live by anything at all. From that moment it becomes a lifestyle. My lifestyle is both music and martial arts. Gaming for me is a hobby, but for many it's a lifestyle.

I do support OP here. Being a damn hippie (even if it doesnt mean anything anymore today) is a livestyle. Being a punk (even if 99% of the people dont know what that means) is a livestyle, being goth (even if all of the USA don't seem to know what that means) is a livestyle. But liking games, isnt. It is in deed a hobby. It doesnt determine you in any obvious way.

Personally, I would not even call it a hobby. Is watching movies a "hobby"? No. Is making movies a "hobby"? Yes, in some cases. It just seems silly and rather demeaning to call games a "hobby" to me. I have never understood why people claim it that it is...
