I would say they are not, you'd be much better off getting a really good custom-built gaming desktop for hardcore gaming - there's a much greater potential for a much more reasonable price. I know it's not portable, but if you had such a good laptop, would you want to be moving it around heaps?
Well if the laptops for travelling yeah

As an engineer I know that making things smaller costs money, and generates more heat in a smaller space. Either you get cheap parts OR too much heat OR overpriced systems OR big, heavy (not-portable) chassis OR some combination of the four. We have PSPs, DSs, Smartphones, etc for a reason.

- If you have money, get a good desktop. You can always get new, "cutting-edge" hardware as it comes out.
- If you don't have money, get a cheaper desktop. You will save money fixing 1 part then scrapping the entire thing if something ever does break-down.

When I'm traveling I don't have time to play any big games; plus quick, casual games work fine on cheap laptops.

Love my XPS M1530. Too bad Dell don't make it anymore :( It's quite amazing <3
I love my XPS 1210! I got mine with one of the best graphics card available at the time. Mine's amazing as well! Even if a lot of people hate Dells, I have always found them to be very sturdy. (My lappy's 6 years old and has been dropped, but works fine!)

In my opinion NO!

Also i find Laptops to crap out on you WAY more than desktops do...

They have poor cooling unless you shell out for some super beefy fans... There just not worth it!
I don't know why you'd think laptops would crap out more than a desktops. Maybe because people treat them less kindly than a desktop? I mean, they do get toted everywhere and I've seen people with laptop's at pools in direct sunlight, so maybe it is not the laptops fault, but the owners.

And as for cooling, a simple cooling pad should be enough if your laptop gets too hot. I got mine for $15 at Walmart and it works fine. My laptop never overheats, even when I'm putting some serious game hours into it.
