City 17 because of the immersive oppressive atmosphere surrounding it and its inhabitants, particularly when you get just outside of it in the Canals and can see the desolation and bleakness of it all.

Downtown DC in Fallout 3 is brilliant, heck all of Fallout 3's locations are amazing. Just wandering through the wasteland and coming upon bombed out communities which are there purely because they would be, not because they have to have a quest.

Isle Delfino. It's so bright and colorful, I just love it. Plus, you can jump on the locals, and all they'll do is make funny sounds and flail in your general direction.

Also, Kokiri Forest in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I always really liked the music and the fairy lights there. Plus, when you go back as an adult, everything seems so tiny!

My favourite level is the 'Spoiler Cave' which should always be preceeded by the 'spoiler warning road'

I really loved the level in Far Cry: Instincts, where you were hang gliding through a valley.

That was a pretty awesome level. Forget about the rest of the game!

I really liked the Citadel in Mass Effect. It just felt so vibrant the whole time, there were always conversations going on, people always seem to have somewhere to go, it just always seemed very organic.

That being said, I've never felt more "home" anywhere as much as I did aboard the Normandy. That was MY ship, and when MY Commander Shepard walked on that bridge, I felt a genuine pride of of ownership. She's fast, she's quiet and she's got the best crew in the fleet.

I would say Wraithmarsh. Obviously I didn't like it there, but it created an atmosphere of death and desolation so perfectly. It's the quintessential haunted village!

Oh, I've got tons of favourite gaming locales:

- The night-time snow field in Halo 1's "Two Betrayals" level, just after you come up the ramp from the underground bridge chamber.

- The exterior of the Cairo in Halo 2, clomping around exploring the station from the outside.

- All of the Ark in Halo 3.

- "Ambassador Row" in Mass Effect, especially on the terraces.

- Pretty much all of DC in Fallout 3.

- Fort Frolic in BioShock.

There should be more, but alas I've run out of time.

I loved Midgar from Final Fantasy VII. It was such a great, dark, oppressive, impoverished, bleak city. Every other location was a disappointment by comparison.

I also loved the enchanted forest around Spielburg in the original Quest for Glory. It's probably the most charming video game setting I've ever seen. It was great - you were always worried about monsters, and as the day started to wear on you actually became frightened about being alone in the forest after dark, but every now and then you'd come across some charming, magical curiosity - the spore spitting spirea, Erana's Peace, the Dryad's home...

I liked Rapture alot. Bioshocks atmosphere was the best part. You know its bioshock when several made screaming phycopaths are running at you and "How much is that Doggy in the window?" is playing in the background.

But more recently, I did like albion alot, especially Wraithmarsh and Rookridge (not that iconic, but i liked it for some reason). Another area that sticks out in my mind was a part of the Hobbe Cave (minor spoilers, thoughs who havn't played the game yet may not want to read). I remember when you where exploring a cave with a villager who was searching for his son. You came to a blocks door, and he tried to get it open while you found a way around. As you came out of a side tunnel you found yourself in a small cave...with bloody sacks hanging from the cieling. One of them had a childs arm pocking out of it. You realised then there was no hope for the son. Who thought the most terrifing creatures in Albion would be the main "wacky" characters?

Hell's Kitchen in Deus Ex. Hands down the best locale ever in gaming history. It had a feeling of oppression, but also people surviving. From bums standing around fires and pimps beating hookers to the shifty bar man, every character seemed interesting. And the music was perfectly atmospheric there.

Damnit, man, you stole my post! Since, however, I should add something, I'll go with the Academy area in Gears of War, the mirage city from Commander Keen IV, Korriban from KotOR, Maple Valley from Forza 2, the interior-of-a-space-whale level from Megarace, and the museum from Stranglehold. (for now)

I liked a ton of Halo 1's areas. Wonderful outdoors areas, light primarily by exploding tank shells. Vegas in Rainbow Six Vegas, (not Vegas 2, the original.) The city of Sitllwater in both SR1 and SR2, Vice City in GTA:VC, New Arcadia in the Penny Arcade series. The Capital Wasteland, Cyrodiil, America in Crimson Skies.
