XP SYSTEMS IN MULTIPLAYER FPSs: It causes an imbalance in play, for those who don't play the game all the time, they'll constantly be killed by people with better weapons, perks, and death perks. Yes,I've had to deal with this, why do you ask?

Regenerating Health: It kills some of the skill of the game,in terms of preservation. Because all you would need to do is hide behind a corner for a minute and all your health and armor would be back at full force. It also takes away some of the challenge seeing as you'll never need to be careful because there's always cover somewhere in these games.

Only Two Weapons!?: I remember in Doom or Wolfenstein 3D where I would have lots of neat weapons to customize my killings (I.E. Minigun to one guy, shotgun to another, then topping it off with a BFG) But having 2 weapons only limits my options for killing dudes.

Fucking. Escort. Missions.: Sadly, this is what turned me off of RE4,having to protect some ball and chain that's as fragile as fiberglass and doesn't do anything to aid me. Not to say that RE5 was any better in that department which leads to my next mechanic I despise.

Broken Partner AI: This was one of the biggest reasons RE5 sucked (Other than it completely becoming an action game) your partner was so stupid, you needed to play with another person just to survive.

and finally
Map Packs or how I stopped loving Halo and learned to hate paying $15 for more game maps: Seriously,it's a waste of money but you have to buy them...because everyone else will be playing them, cutting you off from playing multiplayer with your friends and others because you didn't "Collect 'Em All!"

This is merely a sampler of gaming mechanics I hate, but this post is getting pretty damn long.

I can't believe so few people have mentioned Cover-based-shooting.

Imo, its the single worst part of any 3PS and of shooter games as a whole, utterly detracting from the experience in everyway. Mass Effect is one of the worst offenders here -- literally every single action sequence is based around this mundane game mechanic.

I don't like cover based shooting in 3PS, I thought it was pretty cool when I first came across it but I prefer having the freedom to move the camera and my character.

I understand why games use this because it lets them put in a cool animation but I am not a fan.

oh and AI partners and team mates.

Very good in theory, I have not played a game where it works properly. Apart from maybe an old rainbow six game (forget which one) but only because they just stayed out of the way unless I specifically told them to go somewhere/do something, and this is hardly it working properly.

It's a bit more specific than most examples, but there's a mechanic in Command and Conquer: Generals and its expansion Zero Hour where if you have the computer totally beaten, it'll sell the last couple of its buildings and self destruct all of its units.

Let me say that again: once you've effectivly won the match, the computer ragequits.

I wish I was making that up.

Doesn't Age Of Empires II do the same thing? A little off -topic, but I'm just wondering.

I can't stand when a game takes the camera away from me and turns a 3D game into an awkward side scroller for only selected sections. You always run at an angle and doesn't add anything to the game that wasn't achievable with use of your camera.

I'm not the person to ask, it's nearing a decade since I played Age of Empires. Wow typing that makes me feel old.

Random chances. I hate the idea of whether an attack "hits" or not being dependent on a dice roll, as opposed to whether or not the attacker's weapon/fist/whatever connects with the victim's body. If one sprite's fist overlaps another sprite's face, there damn well better not be a caption saying "MISS!" above their head.

Games with "Level Progression" systems that grant more abilities and perks as you level that are not RPG's. The worst offender is Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, with ridiculous gaps between the abilities of players. When the person you're facing has a gun and you don't, I call B.S. Either match me up with people that are my level or throw out the system altogether.

As many other people have said, Time Limits are just terrible. They are only there to frustrate me. Also, escort missions, where your companion loves to run into trouble and cannot defend themselves. Those make me chuck controllers.

The map system on Crackdown 2 is driving me crazy. I have been playing the game for two hours now and its making me mad. The map from the first game was perfect do not know why they went and changed it.

Regenerating health. It encourages people to be pissy cowards. I remember Serious Sam! There's no bullshitting around with hiding and regenerating behind a chest-high wall. You just dodge bullets and turn them into vaguely pulp-shaped atoms.

Morality systems. It encourages lazy design in otherwise good games, and I've only liked it once, in Planescape: Torment.
